I take up the following issues with the piece; 1) A misrepresentation of Wall St as being composed solely of investment banks which dealt mainly in collateralized debt obligations. This leads the viewer to believe that ALL Wall St investors were investing in and trying to make an unsavory profit on these now toxic mortgage backed securities. Wall st as a locale is much more diverse and industrious than that. A much larger percentage of investors deal in equities or corporate investments which drive most of the industries worldwide. Corporations manufacture just about everything and provide services that make modern life possible. I found the depiction of a generalized view of wall st. an insulting, fear based, misrepresentation. 2) The statement "everyone went bankrupt" is false of course not everyone went bankrupt or Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan would already be gone. 3) The statement "houses are worthless" another fear based misrepresentation- Homes are not WORTHLESS, period. The mechanics of the piece are very educational but the sensationalized misrepresentations are what help drive the ignorance and fear which WILL create more of a crisis then is actually the case. Wealth and capital did not just explode like the depicted bombs and evaporate into thin air- they merely need to be redirected and made to start moving again. FEAR will continue to clog the system if it is allowed to soak into peoples minds with well meaning but misleading pieces like this one. While we are talking about legalizing drugs I figured this would be good to revisit too. Legalize prostitution? I vote absolutely- it will stimulate the economy provide needed jobs, relieve tensions, and as I age I see more and more benefits all the time. BTW not legal in Vermont, so I haven't had the opportunity to try it out as an alternative to dating- which in my opinion is just a pain in the neck these days. add: and this is what happens if we don't legalize prostitution in every state http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQhgXTrT4UI&feature=related Beware of the collateralizing and monetization of your desires. yep The History Channel here in the states did an excellent piece on moonshine. The effect of legalization reduced the associated crime but not the usage. however after prohibition was lifted there was an explosion in commercial production and a massive drinking party resulted nationwide. The real casualty of the war on drugs imop has to do with the banning of industrial hemp production here in the states, a whole industry that is desperately needed right now.-legal in Vermont BTW. DOW now at it's lowest point in 10 years?
Misternatural replied to riddler's topic in Speakers Corner
Since the OP was discussing the Dow I thought it useful for people to take a look at some of the companies that are represented. http://money.cnn.com/data/dow30/ Most investors these days look instead to the S&P because it is clear that the Dow is comprised of some corporations which are mired in the philosophy of the old school technologies and ways of doing business. Some of them are dinosaurs of the 70's that need to evolve or go bankrupt. You will notice that companies like GM and Bank Of America, Boeing, and Dupont are among them. From what I know of the stimulus package, which I have not read extensively because it is so lengthy, some of these companies have to do some major restructuring to survive so yes the stimulus package may in fact bring the Dow down further. Not necessarily a bad thing Lately I have switched my focus to the Nasdaq and S&P who's companies are better suited to a changing infrastructure and way of life. Free market capitalism is all about adaptation. Beware of the collateralizing and monetization of your desires. D S #3.1415 -

>A shift to socialism, that is. Taking from the most productive to give to the lazy. you mean like GM? Look I get it ,supporters of the Bush administration are pissed off and would like to see this administration fail at all costs even if the country is destroyed beyond anything that a small terrorist cell could perform. Thats human nature, some people would cut off their nose to spite their face. Politics and partisanship as usual. It takes guts to accept change and there is going to be some suffering like I said and like it or not we are heading into uncharted water some companies will not survive and some investments will be lost. >If you're looking for a market play, go with companies that will be contracted for all the infrastructure stuff, green companies that are getting chunks of the stimuloot package. Got that covered; ENER, First solar FSLR, Quanta PWR(a grid play) and believe it or not GE (turbines, water purification, grid, etc) but all these strategies mean NOTHING if people start flocking to GOLD and taking cover like a bunch of school children. >There is a reason that people have to QUALIFY" for loans - the have to demonstrate that they have the ability to repay them. So who are these people and why are they not lining up for a loan? Answer: Not many of them QUALIFY due to a fear based lending protocols newly created because of sub prime lending practices. So now they are going to clam up after receiving all the tarp money given to them by the previous administration? Clam up even though the Fed has reduced the prime rate they pay to 0? Capitalism is risky by nature, will some borrowers default YES! thats the way it has always been. The banks have to hike up their skirts and start taking risks to get things going again. They are afraid to take on any risk You know an economic system that does not require risk taking? it's called Socialism- the very system you despise. DOW now at it's lowest point in 10 years?
Misternatural replied to riddler's topic in Speakers Corner
Lately I have tried to study all the angles on how to play the market in this new economy and the conclusion I have reached is that this is chiefly a mass psychological problem. No government stimulus program is going to help without the will of each individual consumer, company employee, banker ,and investor. We have to each try to mitigate the fear and stop focusing on the negative information because it is just that- numerical data that is driven by fear and fear alone. The banks are scared to lend, everyone is terrified as to the real value of the mortgage backed securities. No one wants to buy a home, employees are horrified by layoffs. Auto workers are scared that they will not be able to find alternate employment in case of bankruptcy. Every species on the planet has to adapt to new environmental conditions, So do we. Are there going to be casualties? Definitely, thats life in the real world. I think we and other extreme sports people can use this opportunity to help show everyone around us how to handle fear and rise above it, just like we do on every skydive. Thats the only way to stem the tide of this depression- Stop the domino effect of economic fear by word and deed on every level. Beware of the collateralizing and monetization of your desires. >That and much, much more! >Rough country suspension, eight point roll cage, six point harness, spinners and fuzzy dice! it's all worth it: The winch is great for pulling other kids wimpy strollers out of drainage ditches- You'll be the hero of the next block party-and a nicely blinged out rig does wonders for the youngsters self esteem. add tiny shades, stick on tats, and a dew rag and NO one will mess with your grandkid on the playground. Many de icers contain methanol which I think will dissolve asphalt- Is the dish on the roof? Propylene glycol might not damage the house since they use it at airports where there is lots of asphalt. Prolly even have a bottle there if you winterize the place, usually found under a sink cabinet somewhere. Beware of the collateralizing and monetization of your desires. D S #3.1415

Some sort of squirt gun with glycol or windshield anti freeze?- might melt the roofing though if you have asphalt shingles. Beware of the collateralizing and monetization of your desires. D S #3.1415
