  1. People profile each other every day. That's just how it works. Of course. Nonetheless, the broader message implied by his suggestion is repugnant.
  2. By all means, don't take rushmc's word for it, take this guy's word for it. Black Male says that black thugs are a problem in society I am just a white male, but I think thugs are a problem, whether white or black. Now, the problem starts when those who look like a thug get harassed because of how they look, not because of what they do, or have done. That problem is compounded further when people of a specific race are seen as thugs, just because they belong to that race. When that happens long enough, people get pissed off. Once people get really mad, logic and reasoning tends to go out the door. Add to that some mob mentality and you have got yourself a problem. What the man in the video says goes for a lot of people. Taking responsibility for your own actions is important. That goes if you are black, white, yellow or purple. Solution: Don't look like a thug. Yet we can't tell a white girl not to dress like a whore after she gets raped. Unless of course you believe a girl deserves to get raped if she dresses sexy? I'm not saying it's right, but a large part of police work is playing the averages. If you look and act like a thug that's up to no good, you're going to get hassled. So, stop looking and acting like a thug. Really? So dress more like white people commonly dress or get hassled by the police. Institutional racism. Fuck that.
  3. You grossly underestimate the group outrage throughout every segment of the American black population nation-wide today. Out of curiosity, are you justifying their irrational behavior, or just explaining it? Poor attempt at spinning my point. Answer: neither. Not playing the game.

  5. I could do a hell of a thread on that one. It would have to be in Speaker's Corner, though. Hey, John, remember as a kid back in the 60's watching the cultural conflict between the cops and "dirty hippies"? A lot of it is just an extension of that. Old mindsets die hard.
  6. Ayup. Then there's that whole "history of slavery, Jim Crow laws, miscegenation crimes, restrictive covenants on deeds, and lynchings" thing. All of those things except slavery existed during my lifetime, and I'm only middle-aged. Anyone who fails to recognize the lasting effect of those things on group psychology is a fool. You know, it's a funny thing: the white people in the Deep South still have their institutional memory informed by the belligerencies of the War of Southern Insurrection, and yet in the same mental breath the rednecks throughout the country still fail to appreciate just how much the US's history of racism informs the institutional memory of American black people to this day. Sigh... I suppose it's all a matter of whose ox is getting gored.
  7. You're not very good at pretending to be obtuse about history.
  8. This has already been asked, and answered, in previous moronic "where's the outrage?" threads. At some point - fuck the repetition. Get off your ass, use the Search function, and read them yourself.
  9. And if he didn't say anything people would complain that he went golfing while the country burned. He can't win. Correct. In the face of being unable to win he should stay silent and have people think he is an idiot instead of speaking up and confirming it. The Feds could have made a show of unity with the announcement by showing up but instead they left the prosecutor to hang in the wind with the ruling. I think Holder & Co. are disappointed, but rest assured they won't let a good crisis go to waste. QED - you're proving Dan's point. It was a state-jurisdiction matter; federal "showing up" would have been inappropriate. For sure as hell, if the grand jury HAD indicted the cop & a Justice Dept rep was at the news conference to "show unity" with it, you'd be first in line to stick your foot up their asses for doing that.
  10. Yet some people who advocate that also advocate a parliamentary-style of government. But that's not logically consistent, because in most parliamentary systems the PM/premier is leader of the same party that's in (or controls) the majority in the legislature.

  12. No. Americans' education about basic civics is woefully lacking. (Fortunately, though, we lead the world in math. Right?)
  13. http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-leeds-30134107 In the interest of full disclosure, this has nothing to do with Bill Cosby.

  15. FWIW, you'll note that PAs are addressed in the same paragraph of the forum rules as trolling; technically, each is equally prohibited. There's a message in there somewhere. But yes; it's time to move on. Time for pudding.
  16. of course, there are limits. back in the 50's a woman jumped off the 86th floor observation deck of the empire state building and landed on the roof of a cab. she was closer to terminal, though, which in her case proved terminal.
  17. Which one? There must be thousands!
  18. It looks like a clean, tragic shoot by the officer. That said, your rhetoric about the kid, and his parents, is just plain dumb, on multiple levels.
  19. Yes, I knew you went to NTID, that's why I answered as I did. My post stands. Eta, I grew up in upstate New York, I've lived in New York City as well as several other cities and I've travelled and visited extensively throughout the south, including Alabama.so I'm not just guessing, either.
  20. I'd think it's probably predictable that someone from Alabama would prefer living in Rochester than NYC. It simply is what it is.
