I too used to suffer from those "freak side gusts of wind" and fear of the ground as it came racing towards me at great speed. After doing a canopy control course (Wingtips in the UK) and watching others' landings you begin to see that flare was too high, that flare was too low, a bit wonky, too slow, too fast. Also learnt how my canopy flies. Have not found the stall point but have found the "sweet spot." Some of the exercises were to flare up high (talking hop n pops here) then lift a hand slightly then adjust your hands so your level again. Getting the feeling of what your canopy is doing etc. My landings are pretty cool now. Even to the point that I love nil winds so I can glide across the top of the grass for ages until all that forward speed has washed off and just touch down really gentally. I suppose what I'm getting at is get a coach, go on a course! Don't put off 'till tomorrow what you can do today

Running out landings & flaring technique

Go on a canopy course. I did a short while ago (Chris Lynch's Wingtips in the UK) and although we didn't get to jump due to bad weather that day and have our landings filmed and breifed about them I learnt so much and have not had to run off a landing at all. Just take a couple of paces at a slow jog or walk. Doing practise flares up high and finding the "sweet point" and I now manage to kind of swoop (no I know it's not swooping as all the big boys know it ) and wash off all that forward speed so I land nice and softly on my feet and even pop up a little at the end! You're right most are women but the best one I know is James at Hib in the UK. At the nationals last year he was manifesting 52 4-way teams some with pool camera men\women over three planes in just 18 operational hours (or something like that). There were over 2200 drops completed. Don't put off 'till tomorrow what you can do today -

We had a cypress fire at the weekend at the DZ i go to. Believe the girl lost alti awareness. Landed with both canopies out, unhurt just shook up I believe. Don't put off 'till tomorrow what you can do today

Morning all Me and the boyfriend are going travelling shortly and are due to go to California. We want to stop at Perris and Elsinore. We're back-packing so don't want to shell out loads on accomodation. Can you recommend any accomodation near or on these DZ's and maybe any other DZ's in California? I'm looking to buy a camcorder for skydiving. I don't know much when it comes to camcorders so figured I'd ask you guys for some advice. Most people have recommended Sony's as they are reliable and sturdy. Then they've recommended either the PC107 or PC109. It has been highlighted that they require a docking station to firewire footage. Does this cause any of you too much hassle or do the advantages far out weigh this disadvantage? Thanks!
