Great place, I guess thats why everybody comes here. Everybody was real nice, but being at Deland knowing that even the janitor has thousands of jumps was a little intimidating. Nice facilities, good place to meet new people, plus close to lots of manufacturers.

You don't have to tell us what kind of hernia you have. I'm pretty sure I know how your doc found it so thats good enough for me (cough cough). PLEASE don't wait until it hurts to get it taken care of. If you are going in on Monday then take the weekend and chill. Can you imagine worsening your hernia during a jump? Not to mention what would happen if a non-sympathetic (read: most) insurance companies found out? If you hurt it further you won't have the option of doing surgery when it is convenient.... just play it smart and then you can be thankful. blue ones Mr X

That light is shined in by agents from the federal government waiting for us at the end of the tunnel beacuse they want their money back. If we stay in the tunnel longer, we can postpone meeting them at the end......

I've always rationalized that if I have to rationalize my drinking then I'm thinking irrationally and should have another drink, regardless of the ratio of drinks I've had to the number of rational or irrational people in my immediate company, either in the rational sense or the cyber-sense. -

Hey, I'm stranded in a church too in the middle of Nebraska. A church which also happens to have wireless, which doesn't make much sense to me. I keep seeing a dark and mysterious ninja-like figure sneaking around and stealing other people's donuts. I thought I saw it a few minutes ago at my laptop playing Texas Hold 'Em online. But when I looked back again it was gone and all that was there was a few donut crumbs and a ring from a coffee cup. Filthy ninjas. I'm going to have to rely on my pirate skills to commandeer some chili or something, and then after I have a snack....................... BOOM! WHIZZAK! Ninja'd...... (a scuffle ensues) KAPOW! PIRATE STYLE!!! Who will prevail?????? tune in after the next road report, same dz.com channel, same dz.com stranded in a church thred

IMO, our 'success' with all those others is a big part of my concern. My concern is that ignorance about the scientific basis of medicine will hinder the progression of its practice. Yes, our emotions and idiosyncrasies give us our character. Hopefully we are not one day walking around like identical robots. I believe in treating the soul and the body, "holistically" if you will. But if a biological cause for something like depression can be isolated and treated with a drug, then that is certainly a success in my book. Most if not all psych drugs work best in conjunction with therapy, but many people do well and improve their lives on meds alone.

You're right. The femur is usually considered the strongest bone in the body, and is associated with more internal blood loss (assuming it is a closed fracture) than any other break (except the pelvis). Of course if you do enough trauma to where you fracture a femur you will see other injuries too, but the femur is usually the most serious so it gets the most notoriety. Mr. X

Skydivers that also rock climb?

Naw.... I"m afraid of heights -
This would be a really bad development in playing god. I worry what happens when you screw with the low level programming of the brain - fight or flight is a core element. But we already treat depression, anxiety, inattentiveness, hyperactivity, etc.. with drugs, why not treat fear? Many people have what would generally be considered unreasonable fears. The responsible thing to do would be to treat those whose fears are so great that it interferes with them living a "normal" life.

If you find a good one and you're happy with the care you get.... cool. But you probably would have been better off going to physical therapy. Just an observation: there isn't a single school of chiropractic associated with a public school of medicine in the US. I also looked and couldn't find any affiliated with private medical schools. They accredit themselves (CCE US) as opposed to other medical professions which are accredited by an outside entity (JCAHO).

My new custom helmet paint job
gravitysucks replied to gravitysucks's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Ok I've been getting some PMs about how I did it, so here are the steps I took: 1. Remove everything you can. 2. Sand off the old paint with a large grit like 100. I used an electric pad sander and hand sanded the difficult parts. I had to go all the way down to the carbon fiber shell. Once its nice and smooth, go over it again with a finer grit. Then using a diluted citrus solvent cleaner I wiped it off and made sure it was dry. 3. Mask anything you don't want to get painted 4. Primer at least two coats. Not too heavy, and a light sanding between. Once the primer dries, another light sanding and then wipe that off with a rag, but don't use any solvent because chances are it will affect the paint. Here's the fun part. Make sure you test all your different colors to see which order they need to go on in. In my case the silver was the dominant color so I saved it for last. 5. Apply several coats of the base color. Allow plenty of drying time in between. You can sand any imperfections with a very fine grit like 600 dry/wet, and always clean off the dust before painting! 6. To mask off the pattern I used an adhesive paper for airbrushing. They have them at art stores like Dick Blick (Now called just Blick. I asked and they said that after Dick Blick died they renamed all the stores for obvious reasons. But I still call it Dick Blick because its fun to say). With this paper you can draw your design on and cut it out with an x-acto knife. Be aware though, you are putting a flat design on a round helmet (duh) so expect to make changes. Put it on in small pieces. 7. Once it is masked, paint your pattern on 8. Let it dry. In any places where the paint bled under the masking I used a very small brush to cover it up. When you are happy with how it looks, and any blemishes or uneven spots have been lightly sanded as above, you are ready for the clearcoat. 9. Apply clearcoat evenly as it tends to run. You can also sand between clearcoats but only as needed. Be patient and use lots of coats, I ended up with 7. 10. Don't get anxious. Wait until its all dry then put it back together, and then you can buff and polish it, as described in the post above. Hmmm I think thats it. The paint I used was Testor's Model Master's Lacquer from a hobby shop. The clearcoat was an ultra-gloss lacquer. I wouldn't go with an enamel but if you can find a urethane based paint that would work. The model paint is easy to find, cheap, and supposed to exactly replicate auto paint so its good for our purposes. Any more questions drop me a line. Mr X. -
WHOA - CC seeks face transplant candidate
gravitysucks replied to loumeinhart's topic in The Bonfire
Quote as for the "ethical question...what's the problem? I don't see it. Quote The problem is the basic, "should we do it just because we can" question. There's alot of pretty amazing stuff that we could do in the field of medical science, but its easy to get carried away. However, if a person is in need of facial reconstructive surgery and there is a donor who has specifically made the stipulation that their facial skin could be used for that purpose, then I don't see a problem with it. The traditional method would require multiple grafts and alot of pain, so if this is better for the patient then I say I'm all for it. -
My new custom helmet paint job
gravitysucks replied to gravitysucks's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Oh, that's way to time consuming. He should just cover it with a sticker! Edit to say: I think it looks great! Hmmmm.. I think I'll just live with it. I'm done with this project! Besides, apparently "somebody" is tired of me spending all my spare time on a skydiving helmet. Jeez, you'd think I'd married a friggin whuffo! -
My new custom helmet paint job
gravitysucks replied to gravitysucks's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
So about 2 weeks ago I bought an old Mindwarp online. When it got here I thought it looked like crap so I decided to paint it myself. Well, easier said than done. The first try looked like a middle school art class project. I was so embarrassed I didn't even take a picture. So for round two I took my time and ended up with something that looks like, well, hopefully at least a high school art project. -
But I ain't got wings... ...coming down is the hardest thing. Landing an airplane is scary, I'd much rather jump out.

Hate to interrupt your thread, but I am doing a reverse-canuck (sort of,) and making the move to the Longmont area in 4 or 5 months. If anyone has housing suggestions (good areas, good apartments, etc..) or work suggestions (good website to search aside from the post??) I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Master's thesis on Skydiving, etc... I NEED HELP!
gravitysucks replied to gravitysucks's topic in The Bonfire
So anyways, like usual, I've put this off as long as possible, but now I finally have to choose a topic for my thesis and start compiling sources. I found a scant few on skydiving, one dealing with hormonal responses in first-time skydivers and another one that looked at psychological motivation in skydivers. The trouble is I need alot more sources to make this thing work. I had almost given up until I saw the Adrenaline Rush IMAX which talked about MAO levels in extreme atheletes. Then I realized I can probably open this up to all extreme sports. Here are some sample titles: "The Physiology of the Extreme" "The Natural Response to Unnatural Stimuli" "Psychological Motivation of the Extreme Athelete" Just some ideas. Anybody who knows of any good sources or who has done some of this type of work, PLEASE PM me and help me out. I really want to write a kick-ass thesis.
