  1. Whoa! I just became an "enthusiast"! I'm not buying beer for that though.... Hackey
  2. Those are some awesome pictures! You could use those for wallpaper or for a screensaver. You might even be able to sell a few of those. A friend of mine does photography as a hobby and she's sold a few. I'm not sure to who though. Looks like you're enjoying your vacation! Hackey
  3. I have 52 jumps and I have jumped from a twin otter, c-182, king air, and a casa. Of the four, the casa is my hands down favorite, followed by the otter because of the wide door. Hackey
  4. Rook has definitely had some huge advantages that most of us haven't had, but I can assure you he is anything but a brat. He's a really level headed kid and he definitely hasn't let his skills go to his head. As an instructor, he instills confidence in his students and tries to give constructive criticism where needed. Hackey
  5. Rook was my instructor on a couple of my student jumps at SDC. It was a little intimidating to have a 20 year old world class freeflyer as my instuctor. No doubt about it, the kid is a prodigy. But underneath all that he's a very approachable regular guy. But here's a point you have to remember - he grew up with the sport, actually doing his first tandem with his dad when he was barely four years old. He was doing solos when he was 15. The sky is a very natural element for him, and he never has a problem with giving advice to new jumpers. Hackey
  6. She was a student, but not a skydiving student - she was a college student, I think she had around 50 jumps. She was working at SDC, I think in the deli or in manifest, and was jumping on her day off. The details of what happened are really sketchy, there doesn't seem to be much good info on it, but I think Barry's guess is probably correct. I would say that if you find yourself really low, like 1500 feet, and you haven't pulled yet, go straight for the reserve. From what I understand she was a great person to be around and will be missed very much. It's always hard when we lose someone from our skydiving family. Hackey
  7. I totally agree. I would say that you shouldn't do this in front of anyone, even other skydivers. If someone needs an ass chewing, pull them aside and do it in private. You wouldn't chew out a coworker or subordinate in front of others at work would you? The person will probably be much more receptive to what you are saying if it is said in private, and don't make it a personal attack. Hackey
  8. Here is my top ten list of why skydiving is better than sex: 1. You can do it with members of the same sex without raising an eyebrow. 2. You can do a three or four way and it's considered normal. 3. You can do it solo in front of everyone. 4. Nobody minds being videotaped while skydiving. 5. Satisfaction is guaranteed. 6. There are no strings. You can do it with several different people without offending anyone or making anyone jealous. 7. You don't have to worry that you won't be respected in the morning. 8. You can do it 10 times in a day with no problem. 9. No need to worry about birth control. 10. People will do it with you even if you're ugly. Hackey
  9. I have a couple questions on this topic. I've been thinking about working on my sit and I was wondering what I should wear since I don't have a freefly suit. I was thinking of wearing shorts and a long sleeve t-shirt. Anyone have any better suggestions? Also, where can I get that "you corked kenny" t-shirt? That's hilarious! Hackey
  10. My wife would love it if I quit skydiving, but she accepts it because she knows it makes me happy, and she doesn't want me to resent her for making me quit, which I would. I would be thrilled to death if she wanted to share it with me as a DZ whuffo. As it is, I can't even mention it around her, she just wants nothing to do with it. I don't know why he wouldn't want to share such an important part of his life with you, it sounds to me like something else is going on here. Just a suggestion...maybe you could try some marriage counseling to get whatever it is out in the open. That's how I got my wife to accept my skydiving. Hackey
  11. I have a life policy with Allstate which covers skydiving. However, it is rated up and the rate is approximately equal to a smoker's rate, even though I don't smoke. They also rate up for activities like scuba diving. I used to be an agent for American Family Insurance and their policy is the same. Hackey
  12. If you come out to Skydive Illinois in Morris on the weekend, look for me! Just ask for Hackey.. Hackey
  13. My name is Troy Hackman and I am an accountant (controller) for a national van line. Don't read too much into that, i.e. he's boring, no personality, etc. - I'm not your stereotypical accountant! For example, I wear hawaiian shirts to work every day in the Summer. Those who truly know me will tell you I'm anything but boring. Hackey
  14. I saw one at Skydive Chicago that read something like "fly w me" Hackey
  15. Thanks to all for your advice! I know now what I need to do. Someone else also suggested maybe doing a little stretching before going up. I thought that was an interesting idea..might try that as well. Hackey
  16. You can find a list of USPA member DZ's in all states on their web site...http://www.uspa.org Hackey
  17. I most definitely agree with Krishan! Your writing is so beautiful! You should be a professional writer. Congrats on a great jump! Conquering those demons is a part of the learning process that we all go through. I think it is so great that you do this in memory of your friend Laura. Hackey
  18. I just logged my 41rst jump today. All the coaches I jump with tell me that my body position and mechanics are all good, I'm doing everything right, except one thing. I have to loosen up and relax. This wasn't a big problem for me until recently, but it seems like lately I'm finding it difficult to relax and I start buffeting, and I don't get as much movement. Any suggestions that might help me to relax more in freefall? I'm told that it's the only real problem I have, and once I get over that, I'll be ok. Any suggestions anyone? Hackey
  19. LMAO SpeedRacer!!!! Where do you get this stuff? Hackey
  20. LMAO!!! Thanks for a good laugh on a friday. I especially liked the one about the pig. Hackey
  21. When I run down the stairs I put my arms back in a full track. Also, I look outside at the trees and I'm thinking "is it too windy or not too windy to jump? Which direction would I land in?" I look up at the clouds and think "the uppers look really strong today. I think I would allow more separation." Recently, I was on a commercial flight in a window seat and as I looked out the window I kept thinking how cool it would be to jump from that altitude. Where would the best landing area be? Hackey
  22. My wife hates my skydiving and she almost made me quit the sport. I've heard comments from some other jumpers that it took a couple years for their families to start understanding and even coming out to the dz to watch them jump. Rest assured, you're not alone on this one. Hackey
  23. I almost had to quit because of my whuffo wife (or should I say wiffo?). I even had my gear advertised for sale on the Skydive Chicago bulletin board. This came after I broke my ankle on my 15th jump out at Skydive Chicago. What made it really bad is she didn't know I was out there at the time because I used to sneak out of the house to go jump. I just got tired of her giving me hell every time I went out to the DZ. Well, we came to an understanding about this, and we agreed to disagree. She still hates my jumping because of the cost and her whuffo mentality, but she tolerates it now because she knows it's what makes me happy. Part of the deal is I tell her when I'm going out there and she doesn't give me a hard time about it. I know I'm not alone in this, there are many skydivers out there who can relate. I still can't believe how close I came to quitting the sport, I seriously thought I was finished. But I can't quit now, it's in my blood and a part of who I am. Hackey
  24. As for the stability issue, there's no way a wave off will cause instability on a tandem, and at for at least the first two student jumps you are in the grasp of at least one jumpmaster. I have a hard time seeing a wave off causing a stability problem there. I started waving off on my AFP level two, but it could have been from the very beginning. Still, it is certainly early enough in the program to have it engrained by the time you get off student status. Hackey
  25. This makes the eighth fatality at Skydive Chicago since they moved to Ottawa in 1993. Some may say it's just bad luck but that's eight in eight years. I have to wonder about that. Hackey
