at least he chocked the wheel. Speaking of the Darwin Awards, a mega-whuffo at work in an attempt to mock me and deride the safety of the sport, told me of a Darwin Award story about a videographer who jumped with only a backpack full of camera gear. Knowing about about the checks we do individually and how we look out for our "brothers", I don't see how this could really happen. I checked and could not find this story. "You did what?!?!" Left vs right, a theory on approaches
Salsa_John replied to AggieDave's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I am right handed and left eye dominate. I shoot rifles right handed right eyed and pistols right handed left eyed. I do practice left handed as well. I feel more comfortable with left side exit aircraft and seem to have better exits. As far as approaches go, i choose my them, R or L, according to the wind direction which determine my holding area. I choose the approach will keep me farther away from the runways on final. I think it is a good idea to practice both as you may be faced with a poor landing area and may have to choose the one you are not used to. The things we practice come more naturally in emegency situations. Arch, Look, Grab, Look, Pull, Pull! This is how I was taught. "You did what?!?!" MUFF #3722, TDSM #72, Orfun #26, Nachos Rodriguez -
if you were an existentialist you would not care what others thought and would only deal with the facts... to quote a greek slave as his owner was twisting his leg... "if you continue to twist my leg, it will break." Once the leg had broken the slave said... "I told you it would break." Maybe you should try pessimism, futilism or realism. "You did what?!?!" I want to hear your sucess story!
Salsa_John replied to GravityGirl's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I was having trouble relaxing and had to repeat L2 several times. I could not get the arch. Solly Williams took 10 minutes from his busy day to dirt fly with me. During that time he told me I was to think of him holding a very large needle over my ass. If I did not get my ass down he was going to stick me. Pine at Deland. He told me to F"" the sky. Because of them I was get my arch and was able to pass L3-7 in 1 jump each. There have been others but they deserve my biggest thanks. "You did what?!?!" Sabre (not sabre 2) for first gear purchase?
Salsa_John replied to JeffSkydiver's topic in Gear and Rigging
I currently jump a Sabre1 210 loaded at .9. I have frequent closed end cells. Some of them are so severe that I end up in a diving turn and I have to get to the toggles to correct the issue. My approach is fairly steep with an ok flare. My packs are adjusted to solve the hard opens. I am thinking about downsizing to a Sabre2 190 in another 20-30 jumps. It has a flatter approach, a stronger flair, and is less likely to spank me. My landings are mostly standup and fairly soft. Comments welcome "You did what?!?!" I like tight leg straps to prevent an obvious pain causing incident. As far as forgetting the chest strap.... Before I put on my gear I check: aad reserve card (1st time only - I currently rent gear) reserve closing pin and seal reserver cord for free movement main closing pin and flap Bridle routing Reserve and cut away hadles ( including cut away lines for proper orientation) legs including stiching and buckles PC chest, including stiching and buckles 3 rings RSL Before each jump I check: legs PC chest 3 rings RSL goggles helmet Before I go to the door i check: legs PC chest 3 rings RSL goggles helmet Overkill? Possibly, but I have no questions about my gear working. I only have to do things correctly. Yes mals happen. I want to prevent as many as possible SJ "You did what?!?!" - Take a canopy control class - I love the freefall time, not real comfortable flying the canopy and knowing where to be when; 1000ft, 500ft, 250ft Do this as soon as you pass AFF. You will be happy you did. - Figure out how to judge 10-12 ft off the ground to flare at the right time. I am a very bad judge of distance so I hope I can accomplish this is a relatively short time. Get someone to video your landings for the next 10 jumps. From the side will show you both where your hands are and how high you are flaring. I had the same problem. I did the above and am thankful I did "You did what?!?!" MUFF #3722, TDSM #72, Orfun #26, Nachos Rodriguez

That is what makes us different. We choose to live and to love. I had the best Christmas last year at my DZ. I ended up sleeping in a tent in the cold and rain but, someone took the time to find out who was camping, go out and get a few things. I woke up christmas morning and found a bag with a card, flashlight, candle, and some candy on my tent stoop. Best present I ever got. The closeness and trust we share is phenominal and should be treasured. my 2 c "You did what?!?!" MUFF #3722, TDSM #72, Orfun #26, Nachos Rodriguez
