So I post a question to find some answers that I haven't seen. Seems like a reasonable dilema to me. So, do you care to share your thoughts on the "much better long-term type alternatives"? Last night on the sunset load I lurked around a couple dogs doing a 2 stack. I kept a comfortable distance and followed behind and along side them. I know I don't need to tell you guys, but that was friggin awesome. I had never even pulled high before, so just being under canopy that long was great. I think I may have a new interest brewing here. ?- Should I do something different when packing before a sub-terminal? I opened with about a good 3-4 full twists. I love my Wings...but I'm not married to the name. For no apparent reason my next rig might be from RWS, just because. Wings is great though, customer service is superb, and the harness is VERY comfy. In fact... I love everything about it...maybe I won't stray. So...I guess everyone, all day, jsut walked by while this girl was screaming "help me, this is not my daddy, help!" At one point though, from what I heard, two guys were driving by , jumped out of there car, ran up to them, surrounded this guy (the kidnapper), and were about to beat the shit out of him, when he quickly explained that this was staged and there were police and cameras right over there. I only caught a peak at it earlier today, but I could hear most of it. Did anyone see a news video clip online of hidden cameras observing pedestrian's response to a little girl being kidnapped on the street? It was a staged thing with police nearby; but apparently most people just walked by and ignored this little girl crying for help as someone pretended to be kidnapping her. Someone mentioned the Stiletto and the Nitron...Should I bother researching them and talking to my coaches and mentors about it; or are they way out of my league? Or just a waste of performance at my WL? I know the cardinal rule: don't go down in size and up in performance at the same time. If I stay at the same size, can I take a bigger step up in performance? Compared to all the mid-range canopies mentioned here, what would be the next step in performance that I could be safe under now at a 1.2WL, and continue to enjoy it as I progress in experience. Now I feel like I'm flying a mid-size sedan, and I'd like to move to a mid-size sport coupe. (pardon the analogy) I'm not looking for definitive answers here, I know better than that, I just want y'all to give me some ideas of what to check out. Ok, so I'm planning on getting a new canopy in the near future. Now I'm flying a Sabre1 170, it does the job, but feels really sluggish and tired, and the openings suck. Besides, the wife found out how old it was and how many jumps it has on it,(the numbers seem TOO big for her, I'm not argueing) so now she gets nervous about it and wants me to get a new one. How can I say no to that, I get to buy something for myself without a fight or guilt. Anyway...I want to stay around the 170 size but want something more fun that I wont get too bored with. I really don't foresee wanting to downsize for long, long time; but I want to enjoy the canopy I have all the while. Of course I've read all the forums and talked it over with people here, and everyone mentions the Sabre2, Safire2, and Pilot. Are there any others that I should check out? If I plan to stay at a rather conservative WL could I go for something slightly more aggressive? Or is that not an even trade? Believe me, I'm not thinking anywhere near a Velo or anything like it; but I want this to be a smart buy...now and in the future. And yes, I WILL discuss everything with the experienced folks who know me and my abilities, and demo before I make a decision. Thanks for any constructive input. I have to try like hell to keep it as just a hobby. I am a very driven kind of person, and if I allow myself to view skydiving as a competition, it will turn to an obsession and I'd devote every spare dollar and minute to it. And life being the way it is for me at the moment I can't afford to do that. Hit up Emerald Coast. I was at Eglin for a week last summer and had a free day and went out there. It was a little more than an hour away, but well worth it; I had a great time and the people were great to me as a low-time stranger. There's a few folks on here that jump there, I'm sure they'll chime in soon. I met some of them while there, I'm sure you'll be welcomed with open arms. Have fun! I've never been, but I hear great things about WestPiont. But also try Skydive Virginia in Louisa, its about 45 minutes from Richmond. Like everyone else said, if you are buying new great, you can get everything you want...just make sure you get measured properly. If you are buying used, be sure to try it on and jump it first. And have a FEW expereinced people check you out to make sure its a good fit. The first rig I bought was used, and it was a great deal, but the harness was way too small for me. I didn't notice it at first cause anything was more comfortable than the student gear I was jumping, but my back felt it later. When I got measured for my new rig, I found that the old one was made for someone about 4-6 inches shorter than me...ouch.
