  1. We did not get our asses kicked in Vietnam. We left. It was that or bomb North Vietnam into the stone age which we almost did. Remember Watergate? That's what shut us down thank God. We should have never been there in the first place. As for Lt. Calley, he was not the norm. I never heard of a fire fight or the discharge of weapons that was not reported all the way to division headquarters like the 101st. His company commander knew what was happening, did nothing, and then tried to cover it up with the battalion commander. We lost Vietnam because of a bunch of old fuckers in Washington that still believed there is such a thing as limited warfare. Aside from that, too many of their friends in corporate American were making money out of it at the expense of American youth. Do your part for global warming: ban beans and hold all popcorn farts.

  3. I met a couple of Arabs at a party in Abu Dhabi several years ago that felt that Hitler's biggest mistake was not completely eradicating all the Jews. This was at a time when the Arabs were trying to eradicate each other. There still are many posters from the US calling us Nazi. The today's Germany has nothing to do with this. Let me repeat, I did not want to to accuse you in that regards.
  4. Her present gun is a replacement for a model 10 4inch barrel she had for years. Her present gun was supposed to be a Lady Smith and Wesson but the dealer was out of them and it was too close to Christmas. It is a short barreled (2 inch) model 60 38 S & W SPL. Has a hammer exposed like most and is stainless. (Had to get the model number off the box.) It is a good pocket pistol even though the hammer has some sharp edges. 6. I don't know man, I know a lot about guns and I've shot most stuff out there. I wouldn't have one under my pillow simply b/c it's UNDER my noggin and I'm not in direct, immediate control over it... just seems too risky... Well, my wife makes sure which way the barrel is pointed before she goes to sleep. It's ok for it to be pointed toward the wall or my head; just away from her. 7. remind me to never sneak into your house at night to give you a surprise blow job....lol Actually I was trying to explain that a little modern gun under the pillow is not paranoia, but a simple precaution. The thing isn't gonna go off unless you pull the trigger. We do live out in the middle of nowhere and I used to be gone 2 weeks out of the month so Polly had a gun before we had kids and after. She even had a holster at one time when feeding those stump broke cows. We got trees now. Do your part for global warming: ban beans and hold all popcorn farts.
  8. three options, really... kimber ultra carry II stainless, small kel-tec 32, surefire flashlight (so bright it's debilitating) also... house is set up so it'd be hard to get in w/o making some noise before they get to the bedrooms... and our room is first, then the kids. and our house is on a hill, one story at the top and two stories at the bottom, so that the kids rooms are virtually inaccessible from the outside. can't get to 'em w/o getting past the my room... likewise, kids can't sneak out later in life w/o passing my room... Sounds like an excellent home defense plan particularly the surefire flashlight. I used to sleep with a .45, but found the little Smith easier for my wife when I was away. She held the fort and two kids with that little pistol. Now we have a 2 year old granddaughter with a birthday today.
  9. For the people with shotguns: do you have another option for a close encounter in the bedroom when you are awakened by somebody at the end of the bed? I sure like having my wife's Smith and Wesson 5 shot .38 spl under the pillow in addition to standoff weapons.

  12. (EARTHLINK) Government to pay $87,500 to Kenyan refugee who was denied political asylum April 28, 2005 5:44 PM EDT SAN FRANCISCO - The U.S. government agreed to pay $87,500 (?67,803) to settle a lawsuit brought by a Kenyan refugee who was denied political asylum in the United States. The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights, which handled the woman's case, said it is the first time an arriving refugee has received a settlement in a lawsuit accusing the government of negligence. Rosebell Munyua, 35, claimed the government was negligent because it sent her back to Kenya, even though she said she told immigration officials she feared for her life. The U.S. Attorney's Office said the settlement, filed Wednesday in federal court in San Francisco, was not an admission of wrongdoing, but declined to comment further. Munyua arrived with her 2-year-old daughter at the San Francisco airport in 2001 seeking political asylum. Munyua claimed she and her husband were members of an opposition party in Kenya and had been beaten and tortured by Kenyan authorities. Munyua said her husband had gone into hiding in Tanzania. She said immigration officers interrogated her at the airport and refused her asylum request, forcing her to board the next plane back to Kenya, where she claimed to have gone into hiding for more than six months, according to court documents. "If there was a window next to where I was, I would have jumped out," the 35-year-old refugee said at a news conference Thursday, holding back tears. Soon after, she again escaped Kenya and returned to the United States, this time through Houston, where she was granted asylum in 2002. "I wanted to be in a safe country, where my family was," Munyua said. "In Africa, it's a big thing that America is the land of the free." Munyua sued the U.S. government in 2003, initially seeking $1 million (?770,000). "It wasn't about the money, it was to say justice was done," said Munyua, who now lives with her extended family and two children in Santa Rosa, California, and works as a nursing assistant. She plans to go to college to become a registered nurse. Immigration officials in San Francisco said in court papers that Munyua never "sought refuge from them or mentioned that she would be `killed' if she were returned to Kenya." The government also said Munyua lied to embassy officials in Kenya when she said she did not have family members in the United States. A judge threw out five other allegations in the lawsuit, including accusations of assault, emotional distress and false imprisonment. Munyua's attorneys called the settlement a precedent-setting victory for all future immigrants seeking political asylum in the United States. [url]Putin Defends Missile Sales to Syria April 28, 2005 11:42 AM EDT JERUSALEM - Russian President Vladimir Putin faced down Israeli criticism Thursday, saying Russia's planned sale of anti-aircraft missiles to Syria and supply of nuclear components to Iran does not threaten Israel's security. Putin spoke on the second day of his historic visit to Israel - the first trip here by a Kremlin leader - before meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. The trip was intended to cement Russia's rapprochement with the Jewish state and boost its profile in the international arena. But it was shadowed by disagreements with Israel over Russia's aid to Syria and Iran, two of Israel's staunchest enemies. Addressing Israeli fears that he's affecting the region's balance of power, Putin urged Iran to do more to show the world that it's not trying to build a nuclear weapon. He also called for international supervision of the Iranian nuclear program, which Russia is boosting. "It is necessary for our Iranian partners to reject the creation of nuclear cycle technology and not hinder placing all its nuclear program under complete international control," he said at a news conference after an earlier meeting with Israeli President Moshe Katsav. He was referring to the recycling of spent nuclear fuel. Israel accuses Iran of pursuing nuclear weapons, though Tehran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only. Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi said in the Hague, Netherlands, that his country will resume its uranium enrichment program - temporarily suspended in November - if talks on Friday with European nations fail. Russia has provided assistance for Iran's nuclear program and has agreed to sell anti-aircraft missiles to Syria. Sharon repeatedly has said the missiles pose a danger to Israel and wants Putin to halt the deal. Israeli Vice Premier Ehud Olmert said Thursday that Russia is selling Iran components that can be used to make non-conventional weapons, and that Russia's assistance to Iran is a cause of concern. Olmert, who took part in the Sharon-Putin luncheon meeting, told Israel TV afterward that the two "agreed on a number of practical steps" on security issues, but he gave no details. Sharon, whose parents were born in Russia, greeted Putin in Russian at their meeting on Thursday and told the visitor he should "feel among brothers," Israel Radio said. A Sharon aide quoted Putin as calling Israel a strategic ally of Russia. The United States announced Wednesday it had authorized the sale of as many as 100 large bunker-buster bombs to Israel, which experts saw as a warning to Iran about its nuclear ambitions. Putin defended Russian involvement, saying that Russia was sensitive to Israel's security concerns. "Regarding Iran, we are working to make sure their nuclear ability is used for peaceful means." Moscow's agreement with Iran requires it to return all its spent nuclear fuel to Russia so it cannot be used for military purposes, Putin said. "I agree that these steps are not enough and we have to get Iran to agree to nuclear inspections," he said at a joint news conference in Jerusalem with Katsav, whose role is largely ceremonial. Putin also pledged to tackle the growing problem of anti-Semitism in his country, saying "there can be no place for xenophobia, anti-Semitism or other forms of racial or religious intolerance" in the 21st century. Putin was greeted Thursday morning by the pomp of an official welcoming ceremony, complete with a military honor guard and Jewish, Muslim and Christian religious leaders. Putin also sought to allay concerns about the Syrian arms deal, saying the missiles should pose no threat to Israel. "The missiles we are providing to Syria are short-range anti-aircraft missiles that cannot reach Israeli territory," he said. Israeli warplanes bombed alleged militant training bases outside Damascus on Oct. 5, 2003, and have buzzed one of Syrian President Bashar Assad's palaces. Putin, whose country has traditionally supported the Arabs in their conflict with Israel, said he had personally vetoed the sale of longer-range missiles to Syria out of concern for Israel's safety. Officials who briefed reporters on the Putin-Katzav meeting said Russia already had signed a deal with Syria for missiles with a range of 185 miles. According to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, Putin told Katsav "then I checked and my experts told me that Israel has no way to intercept these missiles so I canceled the deal." "We are taking the opinions and concerns of our partners into consideration, and not changing the balance of power in the region," Putin said at the news conference. "Israel has no problem here." Israeli media reported Thursday that Sharon also opposes Russia's plan to sell military equipment to the Palestinians. Palestinian officials have said Russia is interested in selling armored vehicles to their security services for use in riot control. Israel fears the armored vehicles could fall into the hands of militants. Putin began his visit here late Wednesday on a note of controversy, proposing, just before his arrival, that Russia host a Mideast peace conference in the fall, after Israel withdraws from the Gaza Strip. Palestinians warmly embraced the idea, but Israel and the United States brushed it aside. He did not bring up the conference proposal during Thursday's news conference with Katsav, but said the region had a unique opportunity to achieve peace. "We think there is a chance now to achieve a just Israeli-Palestinian settlement ... much will depend on Israel's willingness and the Palestinians' willingness, first and foremost," Putin said. Putin was to travel to the West Bank city of Ramallah Friday for talks with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas. Putin and Katsav unveiled a monument donated by Russia, in memory of the 6 million Jews killed in the Holocaust. The Russian sculpture depicts six nude figures, one a small child, standing in a circle surrounded by barbed wire. After meeting Sharon, Putin also visited Yad Vashem, Israel's Holocaust memorial center. He toured the new museum and laid a wreath in the Hall or Remembrance, where ashes of Jewish victims of the Nazis are buried. He wrote in the guest book, "We are deeply mournful of all the victims of the Holocaust. This type of tragedy must never happen again." 19. Moms Hold Breast-Feeding Protest in Fla. EARTH LINK April 21, 2005 11:46 AM EDT MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - A city commission candidate was criticized for breast-feeding her daughter during a public meeting, so 16 other mothers turned up and nursed their children at another gathering as a show of support. Gabrielle Redfern apologized for offending anyone, but says she won't stop breast-feeding her child when necessary. She had been criticized by some for breast-feeding her 1-year-old daughter, Elsie, during Mayor David Dermer's recent State of the City address. "Elsie's been coming to public meetings since she was 2 weeks old," said Redfern, who is in her first bid for public office. "I shouldn't have to choose between being a publicly involved citizen and being a good mother." On Wednesday, 16 women held a "nurse-in" in support of Redfern, breast-feeding their babies at a Miami Beach Commission meeting. "How is she supposed to raise her child and have a career if she isn't allowed to breast-feed her child when she attends meetings?" said Ellen Sandoval, who came to show her support. "I quit working because I didn't know or have the courage to do what she is doing." State law says a woman can breast-feed her child anywhere she is otherwise legally allowed to be. But even in a city where topless sunbathing is common, others say there should be limits. "I think it's a beautiful and natural thing, but there's a time and a place for it," said Joe Fontana, who regularly attends community meetings. "It's distracting. Why inside? Why not step outside to do it?"_____________________________________________ I can see it now: A judge imposing the death sentence while breast feeding her baby. Kidding. However, my view of Harley Davidson and their workmanship is not good..... I have a 2001 Road King I bought new. I have never had any problems and there is no oil puddle in the garage. Sweet bike. Good workmanship, and I'd do it again. If I had to choose between the Harley and my wife......well, we won't go there. If I could afford a second bike for fun, it would be a BMW.
