To clarify my previous post: ((discipline && (!spanking)) > (discipline && spanking)) && ((discipline && spanking) > (!discipline)); To clarify this one: ((discipline && spanking) > (!discipline)) != ((!spanking) == (!discipline)); Math tutoring available. As much as I believe spanking to be an inferior method of instilling discipline, I must acknowledge that discipline instilled via spanking is superior, and better serves the child's interests, than not instilling discipline at all. Serious question: Would using nuclear weapons, especially in large numbers, increase the incidence of gene mutations? If so, would that effectively be, for lack of a better phrase, spiking the rate at which evolution occurs? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Hmmm … sounds like metaphor for burning fossil fuels leading to global warming, creating an environment that is less than hospitable to mankind. Or, perhaps, like yours, my interpretation is based upon starting with a conclusion, and then picking and choosing passages to match my conclusion. Having said that, my interpretation makes every bit as much sense as yours. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

A number of us have advocated not spanking kids in this thread, some explicitly, some implicitly, including myself.

Way too misconstrue the Constitution. Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. Notice the location of the coordinating conjunction. How is recognizing our own culpability giving aid and comfort to the enemy? It's irrelevant whether I think we deserved to be attacked on September 11, 2001; I didn't have anything to do with the attack. What matters is if those who attacked us felt justified in doing so. Examining our foreign policy over the past few decades should offer enough insight to understand not only that they did feel justified, but also why they felt justified. Altruistic is not a word that could be used to objectively describe our foreign policy. In recent decades, the US has developed a habit of poking sticks at hornets nests. We shouldn't wonder why we got stung. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Lots of options In my experience, it's always best to buy computer related items online. You'll find a better selection and reviews available. I avoid Logitech products for Mac. The drivers for some of their products rely on unsupported kernel extensions (read: might cause issues with future updates). Since I don't know which of their products do and don't, I simply avoid them all. My first choice for a Mac would be an external Apple iSight, which have an excellent reputation, but they fetch a premium price even on the used market (they are no longer available new). Yes. When al Qaeda was formed in Afghanistan in the late eighties by our then ally Osama bin Laden, we didn't have a problem with them. After all, they were fighting against the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan, which stood for things like equal rights for women and freedom of religion. Of course, the PDPA was also supported by the USSR, and in the infinite wisdom of US foreign policy, we had to stand firmly against anything the Soviet Union supported. So, we began supporting the mujahideen (the careful reader will notice that mujahideen and jihad share the same root origin) factions and "freedom fighters" such as Gulbuddin Hekmatyar. “Throughout the world … its agents, client states and satellites are on the defensive — on the moral defensive, the intellectual defensive, and the political and economic defensive. Freedom movements arise and assert themselves. They're doing so on almost every continent populated by man — in the hills of Afghanistan, in Angola, in Kampuchea, in Central America … [They are] freedom fighters.” President Ronald Reagan March 8, 1985 Now we are facing the repercussions of letting such radical extremists acquire such strength, and call those freedom fighters terrorists, even though their tactics have not changed significantly. And in our Global War On Terror, we are no doubt making more boneheaded foreign policy decisions that will come back to haunt us in another twenty years or so (to say nothing of the ones haunting us now). To be clear, our (proxy) participation in Afghanistan began with Carter, not Reagan. It appears Clinton was the one to (willingly or otherwise) cut off funding to the mujahideen (though it might possibly have been GHWB at the end of his presidency). Math tutoring available. Is the world full of rational people? No. Are national leaders largely rational? Yes. The realist in me admits that we seem to have a problem playing well with others, but the idealist in me believes that implementation of a sound foreign policy could make significant progress towards improving that issue. I generally agree. While I don't think we could completely eliminate the need for the military, implementing a sound foreign policy would allow us to downsize it significantly, ideally to the extent of no standing army, just as the Founding Fathers intended. The same can be said of torture as a means of obtaining information from reluctant witnesses. However, experienced interrogators know that torture is ineffective and does not yield reliable information. Just because something has been done traditionally does not mean it is a good idea. That's why science has a peer review process, both pre publication and post publication. My parents raised three kids. It wasn't until they became grandparents that they realized that timeouts work just as well, if not better, than spankings. (They provide daycare for one of their grandkids 50-60 hours per week, so they understand they can't slack on maintaining discipline, which means they sometimes have to punish for bad behavior.) Of my siblings and cousins' kids, the most well behaved are the ones that do not get spanked. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

And how much has our govt stuck their nose into those markets? Unregulated markets tend to transition to monopolies. Monopolies minimize consumer surplus. Monopolies minimize consumer choice and raise prices. Monoplies worked out great for the former Soviet Union. Yes. That's why neither unregulated markets nor markets in which everything is completely regulated makes good economic sense. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
