How to make your links clickable and do other cool (or not) stuff with your posts Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Right. That's an owner issue, not a dog issue. Ban the breed, and those owners will treat a different breed, such as a Rottweiler, Chow Chow, Bull Dog, or even a Lab just as poorly. In many/most cases, they'll be able to train for human aggression much more easily than with a pit bull. The breeds aren't dangerous, the owners are. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! I'm saying that the pit bull performed better in temperament tests than the beagle. Pit bulls are great dogs for kids, except very small children, since pit bulls play so enthusiastically. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Sadly, you're probably right. Facts don't stand much chance against media sensationalism. It's unfortunate so many people cling to their ignorance so enthusiastically. * * * * * "In my opinion, Pit bulls are the least likely to be human aggressive. On the whole, you have to do a lot of work to make them aggressive to people." --Sue Frisch, Dessin Animal Shelter manager Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

"Pit Bulls are one of the most stable people-friendly dogs in existence. The National Canine Temperament Testing Association tested 122 breeds, and Pit Bulls placed the 4th highest with a 95% passing rate!" Some dogs with inferior temperament than the Pit Bull according to American Temperament Test Society test results (not an exhaustive list): AMERICAN ESKIMO AUSTRALIAN CATTLE DOG AUSTRALIAN KELPIE AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD AUSTRALIAN TERRIER BASENJI BEAGLE BEARDED COLLIE BELGIAN SHEEPDOG BLOODHOUND BORDER COLLIE BULLDOG BULLMASTIFF CHIHUAHUA CHINESE SHAR-PEI CHOW CHOW COCKER SPANIEL COLLIE DACHSHUND (5 of 6 varieties) DALMATIAN DOBERMAN PINSCHER GREAT DANE GREYHOUND JACK RUSSELL TERRIER LHASA APSO MINIATURE POODLE MINIATURE SCHNAUZER OLD ENGLISH SHEEPDOG POMERANIAN RAT TERRIER RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK ROTTWEILER SAINT BERNARD SAMOYED SHETLAND SHEEPDOG SHIH TZU STANDARD SCHNAUZER TOY POODLE YORKSHIRE TERRIER The breed does not have any innate human aggressive qualities. Please do some research before claiming otherwise. The Alabama Supreme Court found in Sheila Tack vs Huntsville that pit bulls were not inherently more aggressive than other dog breeds. From another case, City of Toledo v. Paul Tellings: Much evidence was presented that pit bulls which have not been trained to be aggressive are highly obedient, eager-to-please, good family pets. Jed Mignano, a Toledo Humane Society cruelty investigator, testified that pit bulls had been taken in at the shelter, did not require special cages or treatment, and were adopted out without problems. He further stated that he had never been bitten by a pit bull and did not experience them to be "vicious" in comparison to other breeds. The state's expert, Dr. Borchelt, testified that he had never been bitten by a pit bull, that his investigations for housing complaints against pit bulls in New York did not reveal any vicious pit bulls, and that most pit bulls brought to animal shelters were adopted out without hesitation. Karla Hamlin testified that some pit bulls taken into the Lucas County Dog Pound exhibited aggressive behavior, chewing on mesh fencing and through aluminum water buckets. She acknowledged, however, that she had never been bitten by a pit bull and did not think pit bulls, as a breed, were any more likely to bite or to fight than other dogs. From The Truth About Pit Bulls: "It is estimated that there are 60,000 Pit Bulls in the City of Chicago alone. This number is so high because people are breeding them for the wrong reasons. Most of them are living in hostile surroundings. It is an amazing testimony to the breed that although 95% of these animals suffer abuse/neglect, we rarely hear of any problems. One analogy is, if there was a sudden increase of people being injured by red cars, would we ban red cars? No! common sense would dictate that red is more popular color choice." It's BS like this that gives various canine breeds undeserved bad reputations. Pit Bulls cannot lock their jaws. Whoever told you otherwise is full of shit. I fail to see how you came to that conclusion. What am I enabling? Responsible dog ownership regardless of chosen breed? Not everyone is cut out to be a dog owner. That's not the fault of the dog any more than it is kids' fault when their parents fail to parent. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

A proper diet has been shown to be an integral part of the learning process. Peanut products are a cheap source of protein which is part of a proper diet. Roadkill is also a cheap source of protein. Again, that's irrelevant to the discussion at hand. No one is suggesting a sterile learning environment can ever be achieved. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Right. That's what the school in this thread is trying to do. Right, but we can minimize risk. That is what the school is trying to do. It's no different from why skydivers take reserves and other backup safety equipment with them on each skydive. It reduces the probability of death. It doesn't eliminate that chance, only reduces it. Are you suggesting that "on equal terms" is synonymous with "safe learning environment"? I'm suggesting that, in the context of this thread, safe learning environment is encapsulated by "on equal terms." Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

I agree that not all breeds are created equal in temperament or ability to do damage should they attack. In terms of temperament, pit bulls are gentle. In terms of ability to do damage, there aren't many dogs that can do more than a pit bull. That's largely their appeal to assholes that want to train them to be mean. Dogs don't attack for no reason. If they aren't trained to attack, then it is usually self defense or a combination of not being trained to suppress natural dog instincts and the attackee violating the "dog rules" associated with those instincts (e.g. sustained direct eye contact, holding a hand on top of the dogs head, etc.). Some breeds are more training and maintenance intensive than others. I'm not saying that a pit bull is the right dog for everyone. It isn't. Nor is a JRT the right dog for everybody. But it would be foolish to blame the breed because of the actions (or lack thereof) of some owners. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Notice the "on equal terms" part. That means they do have a legal responsibility to offer education to everyone and thereby could not deny entry to the students. However, that offer only has to be on equal terms, there is no mandate that they accommodate to anyone's special needs. Right. Which means that all kids are equally entitled to a safe learning environment. Thanks for supporting my point.
-
Yes, but not necessarily where we want to do so. No stipulations. Their kids have a right to attend public schools. They have a right to learn in a safe environment. It is the school's legal responsibility to provide that safe environment while the kids are at school. How is it unfair? I fail to see how this is the case. Parents are legally required to compel their children to get an education. For most parents, public school is the only feasible option. Sending one's kids to school with an expectation that they be reasonably safe is not leaving the parenting up to someone else. In an ideal world, the kids wouldn't have the allergies. But they do, so the school has to take reasonable precautions. At worst it is a very minor inconvenience to the other students. I suspect the ER for one student and juvenile detention for the other. No one is being expected to bend over backwards. Nothing, if the parents are qualified and are able to survive on a single income. That's a fairly rare combination. Fortunately, the families have a right to send their kids to public school. The chance that it is feasible for all three families is very slim. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! Velocity tells us how fast we are going in a particular direction. It has a direction component and a magnitude component. The magnitude of the velocity is the speed. Imagine a horse on a carousel. As the carousel goes round and round, the speed of the horse stays the same. The velocity, OTOH, is continuously changing (i.e. the horse is continuously accelerating), because the direction is continuously changing. Neither speed nor velocity happens "first." Velocity just offers more information. Consider the following statements: 1) A car traveling at 45 mph crashed into a car traveling at 35 mph. and 2) A car traveling north at 45 mph crashed into a car traveling south at 35 mph. From which statement are we able to get the most information? Plane Geometry as in Euclidean Geometry? Yes, I believe they are defined the same way as they are in Physics (relativity notwithstanding). Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -

It doesn't matter where I draw the line, only where the courts draw the line. In this particular case, I don't believe it is anywhere near the line. It is well within the "reasonable precautions and accommodations" area. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
