GW Explorers Stranded near North Pole by Cold Weather
jcd11235 replied to lawrocket's topic in Speakers Corner
They better get out of there quickly! That ice is gonna be gone by Sunday with this type of melting going on. I'm pretty sure the writer meant: During their 850-kilometer (530-mile) trek, the team aims to gather data to complement satellite and submarine observations to measure the sea ice and plot how fast it is disappearing. 85 days at the north pole sounds pretty hard core to me. I can see how waiting for a late resupply could suck. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -
Right. They were critical of Medicare, and even their high number for Medicare is lower than their low number for the private side. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

The success of drug decriminalization in Portugal
jcd11235 replied to nerdgirl's topic in Speakers Corner
I can't and don't presume to speak for nerdgirl, but I would personally be against supporting legislation that is based on the unsubstantiated (and incorrect, in my experienced opinion) assumption that marijuana impairs driving ability to an extent that requires taking steps to keep drivers off the street after they've smoked. Would you favor the death penalty for someone who is causes a fatal accident because they were eating a Big Mac? How about if their impairment was caused by using their cell phone? Changing the stations on the car radio? Cold medicine? More than 12 hours since they slept? Talking to their kids in the back seat? Thinking about that meeting with the boss earlier in the day? Thinking about what to have for dinner tonight? Being young, inexperienced, and attending/having attended a school without a drivers education program? Being in a bad mood or driving while angry? Where should we draw the line? Unfortunately, the driver's seat is not a sterile environment. Few drivers give 100% of their attention and optimal ability to the task at hand. Nearly everybody knowingly drives with some sort of impairment or distraction. Driving/riding as a passenger on public roads is not a safe activity. While it's safer than skydiving, participants are still subject to pay your money, take your chances. The fact is, drivers can do everything correctly, and still be involved in, or even cause, an accident, some of which, unfortunately, are fatal. Singling out one of many activities or circumstances which can cause impairment, very minimal impairment at that (see this post for additional information and links to corroborating studies), without respect to the level of impairment caused by the activity or circumstance, is not an acceptable way to address the issue. Or, stated another way, 78 percent to 90 percent of drivers involved in crashes did not have drugs in their system. It would be foolish to use that statistic to support legislation to criminalize sober driving. The fact is, without knowing what percentage of drivers are driving with drugs in their system, knowing the percentage of drivers in the subset of drivers involved in crashes doesn't offer any meaningful information, especially without further breaking down the data in terms of which drug(s) are found in the system, and at what level they are detected. We cannot assume that the mere existence of drugs in the bloodstream is the primary factor of all accidents involving people who may have drugs in their system. The editorial draws conclusions not supported by the data presented. It appeals to emotion rather than presenting a logical argument. From the editorial: Having never tried marijuana or any other illegal substance, I couldn’t tell you what drives people to take drugs. I couldn’t tell you what possesses them to seek out more drugs. I don’t even understand why they try them in the first place. It’s like drug users are stuck in the third grade and the school bully tells them they should eat the brown thing he gave them that looks suspiciously like a cat turd. He promises that it will be good, it will help them relax, it will help them focus, it will help them be anything in the world they want to be. And in the end, they take a bite of the turd and are surprised when it does none of those things. They just have a serious case of halitosis and a hankering for their next turd. You can tell me how wonderful it is and how much it has opened your eyes to a new world of possibilities or how it’s just like alcohol but better. All I’m going to notice is that your breath smells like bull hockey and you probably need a bath. In other words, Ms. Foster is admitting that she's arguing from a position of ignorance. You wouldn't ask your banker about the best way to install a shower head in your bathroom. You wouldn't seek advice about identifying the best diamonds among different pieces of jewelry. You wouldn't go to a bricklayer for advice about setting up a CD ladder. Why would you accept advice about drugs from someone who admits that they have no first hand experience with them? Right. But one could use past lottery sales and jackpots to determine the necessary size of a jackpot in order to provide an expected value greater than $1 for each $1 spent on lottery tickets. It's not that logic and mathematics cannot be applied, it's that they must be applied properly in order to obtain meaningful results. No, but you do run that risk if you apply logical fallacies and invalid logic in place of valid logic. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

The success of drug decriminalization in Portugal
jcd11235 replied to nerdgirl's topic in Speakers Corner
OK, so we need another what; .25., .15., 10 percent impaired drivers out there? I think it shouldn't be a concern. We let people eat while they drive, which is distracting. We let people talk on phones while they drive, which is distracting. People do all kinds of things while driving that diminishes their ability to focus on the task at hand. Singling out one of the things that has such a minimal effect for no real reason other than political correctness seems as asinine as the drug war itself. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! Studies show that driving under the influence of cannabis does not adversely affect driving to anywhere near the extent of driving under the influence of alcohol. It is comparable to driving under the influence of OTC cold medicine that has been taken as directed. I'm far more concerned about drivers who talk on their cell phones, with or without hands free accessories, than I am with drivers high on pot. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! I'm not saying the whole gang shouldn't have to wear diapers, to borrow your metaphor. But the leaders are part of the whole gang. If the whole gang screws up, and the leader is telling them about it, that leader doesn't say "you fucked up," that leader says "we fucked up," and accepts responsibility as well. He doesn't berate the unit. Otherwise he's demonstrating piss poor leadership, which is usually a good indication of why the whole unit screwed up to begin with. Math tutoring available. Out of curiosity, how many rugby teams sign a player based primarily on fighting ability? It's been about ten years since I've watched hockey regularly, but at least then, pretty much every team had a player whose job was to beat on the opposing team's best players. Rugby players may be tough, but they don't need pads because things happen more slowly than in hockey, and the rugby ball is also much larger and slower than a hockey puck. It's simple physics. K=(1/2)*m*v^2. Speed has a greater effect on energy than mass, and just as much effect as mass on momentum. Plus, they play on the soft ground instead of the hard ice. Every time I sit down to watch the fights, a hockey game breaks out. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

It was a combat arms unit that I was in. Who said anything about not correcting individual troops when they fuck up? I didn't say anything remotely close to that. Of course they need to be corrected. Formation isn't the place to do it, but it still needs to happen. What I said was when an entire unit fucks up, their leadership and/or training is to blame. The leaders and trainers need to be addressed, and definitely not in front of the rest of the unit. That's incompetent leadership in and out of the military. To put it another way, if you have a sports team, and one player isn't performing adequately, you get rid of that player. If the team isn't performing adequately, you get rid of the manager/coach. As a battery, company or platoon? Not after about week three of basic training (actually OSUT,but that early it's the same as basic training). Leadership by example is far more effective. My first commander at my permanent duty station was a third generation West Point graduate. His father and grandfather were both generals. He was an asshole. His unit being anything less than the best was unacceptable. I couldn't stand that fucker. He was also the single finest soldier I've ever encountered. There's no one I'd rather follow into combat. He knew that berating troops is a poor way to motivate them to do better. It's a lot like torture. It may work great in Hollywood, but in the real world, it's an inferior option. If a single troop messes up, that troop is to blame. If an entire unit performs inadequately, it is due to poor training and leadership. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! It wouldn't matter either since you've already generated an opinion based on not knowing. I only formed an opinion about the asshat in the video, and that was not without reason. He's certainly not representative of the typical soldier when I was in, but that's been well over a decade ago. There were a few troops with such attitudes, to be sure, but they were the exception, not the rule. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Americans, not politicians, hold power to change Iraq war
jcd11235 replied to jkm2500's topic in Speakers Corner
While I trust that you actually know what you're talking about, your link offered no explanation or example of such a numbering system. It referred only to "Operation Iraqi Freedom," as I have. "The Department of Defense announced today that the 34th Infantry Division headquarters, based in Rosemount, Minn., is scheduled to deploy in the spring of 2009 to support Operation Iraqi Freedom." That was the "too stupid to realize that the Iraqis didn't ask anyone to come screw up their country for them" strategy. I hope I wasn't the only one that saw the irony of the guy wearing Kevlar and carrying the semi/burst weapon calling everyone else cowards. I thought the guy was a disgrace to the uniform he was wearing. I certainly hope he isn't representative of a typical US soldier. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
