I disagree. I generally feel a major increase in forward movement (if I'm not too head-low), the moment I feel the fabric lift from my skin. Edited for typo.

please pm for details. i'll be traveling through great britain in late october for ten days. looking for some jumpers, jumps, beers, and maybe a place to crash or two.

Nevermind. Not only did I find that the info was already on this site, but it turns out that I also already own the album. If anyone else comes searching for it, it's "What Else Is There?" by Röyksopp from the "The Understanding" album.

Does anyone have a soundtrack listing for Superterminal? Particularly the piece that takes up most of and ends the tracking segment -- the female vocal disco-esque track. I'd love to pick up this and more of their music.

They're here, but they're illegal. :(

NPS has a "conspiracy to commit aerial delivery (or operating an aircraft)" charge they'll throw at you just for having a rig, and they don't treat it much differently than having witnessed you make a jump. Just a warning.

Really? These guys are having fun and sharing it with you. I'm not seeing the same sinister thing that you are. How is this negative?

Regardless... fuck yeah!

Hmmm... sounds like he managed to successfully jump from the tower. Returning to land, though, proved to take more time than expected.

The Katana is like a Velocity with better openings and 2/3 the bottom end. It's probably one of the best canopies out there, crossbraced or not, for sheer fun in the air. It has my vote.

It's always been my understanding, having known both parties involved, that while Jari shared "the dream", ran the business, and hucked his meat from planes and cliffs in the prototypes, the actually design and construction came from Robert. I think the line between "dream" and "design concept" can be blurred in the eyes' of the beholder. For me, there is a big difference between, "I think it'd be cool have a inlets on the back for backflying", and knowing exactly where to put the inlets to make them effective. I would not credit the prior to the design at all.

Um... are you talking about Oregon, USA, or Oregon, Nicaragua? I don't think the latter exists. There are a couple birds at Eugene skydivers. Kim has a GTi. Molalla has tons of birds with a lot of experience.

Yeah, I'm a skydiver AND a BASE jumper and I can't stand myself sometimes Sometimes I'll skydive a tracking suit alone all day to get current on it for the night's BASE jump. Not once have I ever started to climb and thought, "Man, I've been such a pussy all day!"

Oh, and I should mention that talking to the guy first was the right start, IMO. The guy was obviously being a punk. I bet he was packed slider down with a 48" PC and no the line mod for a terminal jump. Reading people's thoughts on the selected FAA rep, it really doesn't seem like a such a big deal. But I still think Gary had quite a few points of contact to resolve the situation before going to the top.

I believe that is the case, too. Perris' FJC had a balloon involved at one point, and I recall hearing that it turned out that it was somewhere between grey area and illegal. I don't remember if the balloon was tethered or not. DW did a televised jump from a tethered hot air balloon, and it was definitely kosher.

Both parties involved made bad decisions, in my opinion. The first mistake was even bringing BASE gear to a skydiving convention. Taking a BASE rig out of an aircraft at the WFFC is just plain stupid. BASE gear is for BASE jumps. There is a single parachute and deployments are low out of necessity. If I could jump a 13,000' wall all the time, hell yeah, I'd take a skydiving rig. Velocity, reserve, and all. The responsibility always falls on the pilot. That's for donning the proper gear, seatbelts, etc. The guy can pack a BASE rig and show off all he wants, but a smart pilot isn't going to let him on, especially at such a high profile event. Gary should have asked the pilot if he was letting BASE jumpers out of his balloon. If the pilot was, after discussion/education, adamant about letting people out with single parachute systems (which is doubtful), then he should put a FAA rep in touch with the pilot, if so compelled. This is the kind of thing that happens off DZ, or last load of the day when no one is around -- and is still risky. I mean (cough) never happens (cough). I cannot confirm or deny having done this, but if (cough) I did, it would have been for wingsuit BASE training, at dawn and at sunset, with no eyes on me. A newbie BASE jumper showing off to his whuffo friends is unjustified from any realm of parachuting experience... BASE or skydiving. And on the two... I like to do both. A lot.

Fiiiiiine... no more spike strips.

Wah, wah, wah. ;P Oh, yeah... that, too. Had the wind more or less knocked out of me once, followed by a few days of a sore neck. Was packed for sub/near-terminal slider up, but was weathered out. WSed the next jump with that pack job -- could have used a couple extra wraps of tape and a slightly smaller PC.

I always pull in full flight and lose almost no altitude because of it. With the low pull trend that's resulted in so many close calls and tragedies, it's apparent that the reduced fall rate can throw off your "visual altimeter" a bit. The only "problem" I've had, in general, is that if you get asymmetrical at pull time with a lot of forward speed, off-headings can be really pronounced and throw you a line twist. It happened once on a BASE jump when I had a somewhat tough pull from the BASE PC pouch. But if you stay symmetrical through the opening, it will usually give you better heading. That's my experience, anyway. Your mileage may vary.

I grew up around a decent population of Golden Eagles. I've seen one fly effortlessly, land on a telephone pole, take a few bites, then fly off just as easily... with a large coyote pup. big bastards, these.

I like the idea behind #3... "Fuck deploying! I'm landing this shit!"

Re: emergency service costs... The jumper pays for the ambulance ride, but what about police, fire and anyone else involved doing paperwork and being present on the taxpayer's dime? Not just in accidents, but policing tends to increase where there are more people. When a larger event is expected, more officers are put on duty. While I think car accidents from rubberneckers are very rare, the potential is a concern for some. It takes police to handle and (possibly) prevent these situations. I think traffic congestion is the biggest concern. I'm not playing devil's advocate, I'm just looking at it from their view and thinking of reasonable measures we can take to express our gratitude for this object without sacrificing our fun.
