That's why I never throw the "single" away, because sometimes its mate is just hiding somewhere... in the dryer, in the washer, in a pant leg, etc... Uh. Thanks! I just added that to my facepalm images collection. Always good to have more of those! I also considered this one. Not a facepalm, but appropriate nonetheless. You might look into the PD Optimum reserves - they have a reputation for sweet flying & landing, to the point where some folks have wished they could fly one as a main. The Optimums also have lower-bulk fabric (so they pack a size or so smaller), allowing you to put a larger reserve in a container sized for a smaller one. So if you decide to stick to a 190 main, with a similarly-sized reserve container, you could likely fit an OP 218 in there. The one negative is that they're relatively new on the market, and as such, used ones don't come along all that often. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. Unusual Incident: Blinded by Condensation
NWFlyer replied to AviationTD's topic in Safety and Training
Might want to think through that advice a little bit more. Personally, I'd never attach something to my chest strap (like a helmet) that could potentially interfere with my ability to see and reach my handles. Even if I open at my normal altitude (3Kish) and decide my main is happy and landable, there are scenarios that could cause me to need to cutaway and/or fire my reserve later on (canopy collision in traffic, self-induced malfunction to name but two). Me personally? Yes. But judging by some of the "death penalty only costs so much because we coddle scumbags with multiple appeals" crowd on here, I'd guess not everyone feels the same. Mellow stuff and inspired covers have been turning me on lately. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyqgWYIVgQI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GoyPKKuCG7A (I've actually been listening to the Bob Dylan version but can't find it on YouTube). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QmplIdMtcc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4sEG7z2cA0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Le-3MIBxQTw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuC_l3ymXhM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lB8Nkn3Xjes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrCMlSWlDX8 "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. Nice Difference between summerfest and LP. At summerfest, they kicked me out of the bar. At LP they come find me and demand I go to the bar (bonfire) -
This. I remember when I had about 30 or so jumps and was first out of the Cessna on a solo. I got the spot wrong, and everyone on the load landed short (safe, but short of the intended landing area). I made a comment to the DZO "I hosed everyone on the spot," and he said "No, you hosed yourself on the spot. Were the others on the plane jumping with you? No? then they decided for themselves when to exit." That point sunk in then, and it's stuck with me. With all the debate about under-18s jumping, this thread is a clear indication that some people over 18 can't take responsibility for their own decisions, either. Rick Nielson of "Cheap Trick" on NPR's "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me"
NWFlyer replied to ryoder's topic in The Bonfire
I saw Cheap Trick play a few years ago (not sure exactly how long, but within the last 10) in a club in Seattle. They seemed to be going for the Spinal Tap approach of being as loud as possible to cover up the fact that they weren't all that tight as a band anymore. It's actually funny how wrong you are on so many counts. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke

You talkin' to me? Hey... You stay outside of this thread. When thread drift gets to the destruction of american values, you can come back. Shouldn't she be off promoting the gay agenda somewhere? You bet. She's Ming the Merciless when it comes to clutter. Hey, I just saw a video of Miles doing an indoor base jump today at your hotel. Did you catch that? I did now. Our daughter Melissa has been doing that for us. With up to 6 people in this house I don't know what is what to whom, but she has a way of telling Mom "No one is ever going to wear/eat/use/want this" and having Mom let her huck it out. Our entry closet is actually useful again. Yep, I need to do a merciless culling of my crap. I'm trying to do it slowly but surely. Can I borrow Melissa? Help a rookie: Becoming a professional skydiver
NWFlyer replied to NuclearCaffeine's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Learn how to pack. Find out if you can pack for others at the DZ (either for other fun jumpers, or for the dropzone's school - packing student rigs and tandems). That's the best money on the DZ (no, I'm not joking). Ask around if there are other odd jobs that need doing at the DZ. Maybe it's fueling the planes. Maybe it's fixing that broken railing. Maybe it's cleaning out the bathrooms. There may or may not be the opportunity, but if you show that you're willing to do anything and hustle, there might be a place for you to earn some extra money. Or there might already be two or three people living in a tent on the DZ who are filling that role for the DZO. If you've got any customer service / retail experience, manifest might be an opportunity. If it's a large DZ, there might be an opening on the grounds crew. (For example, Skydive Chicago just recently posted on Facebook that they're hiring for that role). So, there are jobs to be had on a dropzone that don't require skydiving skill, but there's just not that many at most dropzones. 10 minute tidy. Do 10 minutes on one area. Maybe the area that's grossing you out the most. Could be the microwave and all that crap splattered on the top. Could be the toilet and sink. Just do a little. I'm with you - I hate cleaning and housework, and I'm fortunate that I can pay someone to do it for me. However, I still do have a lot of clutter that I need to deal with, closets/drawers/cabinets that need to be gone through with stuff sorted for keep/sell/donate/trash. I used to try to say "I'll devote a whole weekend to it!" and I'd never get motivated for that, so now I'm trying to say "Okay, I'll spend an hour and do one closet." Doing it in mini-projects means I'm making more progress, just gradually. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
