  1. Try having Klingelhoefer as a last name...... Impossible to go Incognito. I get busted on my first name ... not too many of us around. 2. My employers have all known, but it's neither something I talk about much nor something I try to hide. Trying to hide it wouldn't work - google my name and there are enough references to me being a jumper out there that I can't be totally incognito. Never had any problems from employers. 3. I've bolded what I think is a great takeaway from this - looking at your planned pattern, it's one that I wouldn't have chosen on a high wind day - as you discovered, turbulence is a real factor, and because close to the ground it puts you over something you don't want to land on, without a lot of options. Looks like you've got lots more room to land farther out in the landing area (not knowing the patterns there, I'm assuming all that space is available and not a restricted area); on a high wind day, either stay on the ground or plan to take a longer walk. Glad you're here to talk about it.
  4. "Students happen." I like that. At Skydance's safety day one of our AFFIs brought up the topic of students and how, as much as we teach students to be predictable and keep their eyes out for other canopies, etc, we can't always count on them to do this, and that it's up to the more experienced jumpers to be heads up and aware of where the students are and what they are doing, and do our part to give them a wide berth. His phrase was "treat them like blue-jumpsuited killing machines." Funny phrase but it gets the point across - we do our best to give them as much space as possible with separate landing areas, etc., but we all still need to do our part to keep an eye out for them as they often get very myopic anyway. Edit to add: for that matter, mistakes happen at all levels. I think one of the experiences I had that has best colored my attitude towards canopy safety was teaching defensive driving courses in college to students who were working part-time for campus transit. Drivers were penalized for accidents if they were preventable. Not just accidents where you were at fault, but accidents that you could have helped prevent. An accident can be the other guy's fault, but if you as a driver didn't do everything within your power to prevent the accident from happening, you would still be penalized. It's easy to be dead right. The better option is to be right and alive to have a discussion about who was right and who was wrong. 5. Again, you're over-complicating it. Nowhere do you see "what the ex will think if I date this person" in the five facts (or the Venn diagram). Agreed. In fact someone comes to mind who could use this service. I know. That Krisanne chick needs to get some perspective. I know, right? I need a life coach to help me understand how I have managed to be happy even though I'm above a size 8. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 7. I haven't been put in this position on a divorce, but I have for breakups, and my response is similar to others' "I love you, but do not put me in the middle of your shit." I feel like I can be empathetic without taking sides (there might be a few exceptions, like an abusive relationship, where the only right thing to do is to take sides, but most breakups are just messy, complicated emotional things, not the outcome of abusive behavior). If one friend absolutely demanded I take sides against the other, that would probably be where I distance myself from the situation. C'mon, now. All you need to do is spend a couple days reading Bonfire posts to realize how many people need help! "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke

  10. Yes, $32/night for that long a stay (same link I included above for the bunkhouse info). "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  11. Five facts (and one Venn diagram!) about dating .... the rest is overthinking. 1) The members of your target dating population are people*, just like you. 2) Some of them will like you, some of them will hate you, the overwhelming majority will be entirely neutral about you** 3) You will like some of them, you will hate some of them, you will be entirely neutral about the overwhelming majority of them. 4) If someone you are attracted to is not attracted to you, there is nothing wrong with them. There is also nothing wrong with you. You are just not right for each other. 5) If someone is attracted to you and you are not attracted to them, there is nothing wrong with them. There is also nothing wrong with you. You are just not right for each other. *If they're not, then this is not the thread for you. I can offer no insights on human/animal or human/alien relationships. **Unless maybe you're a terrorist, politician or Yankee fan. Then people probably won't be very neutral about you. 12. The part where you went immediately into costs ... so I thought cost was your concern. I agree all those other things are valid reasons for not doing the bunkhouse. I wouldn't stay there more than 2 or 3 nights either. Personally, I'd get a teamroom for myself (or me and the SO) if I were there for 18 nights. All the privacy of a tent and none of the frigidity. (But that would double your tent expenses). I thought Team room were for like you know..TEAMS. can you solo book them? Yup. We rented a 4-person one for the '09 holiday boogie for just the two of us - you pay for the whole thing regardless of how many people you put in there. They have two sets of bunk beds, a microwave and a small fridge. You still use the shared showers, but there's quite a bit more privacy (not to mention room to keep your stuff) than in the bunkhouse. It was fairly quiet back there. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. 15. My boyfriend of 6 years broke one of the "rules" I thought I had ... he's shorter than me. I realized that was a totally irrelevant criteria to apply when I started paying more attention to how much fun we were having together, how little drama there is in our relationship, and how much we respect each other as we are. In other words, I was (and still am) attracted to the person, not the height. Of course, I'm sure you'd think I just "settled." 16. She's famous because she's related to someone who is famous because she married someone who is famous because he was born into a family that a long time ago managed to convince people that they were more special than other people and thus deserved wealth and special treatment. 17. I gotta ask a question, shah. Do you and your friends feel like women are some other species of human that don't, from time to time, have intestinal difficulties? Because that's kinda what it sounds like to me. You strike me as one of those guys who is under the illusion that women don't ever pee, poop, spit, laugh so hard they snort, fart, puke, sweat, stink, queef, get a snotty nose, etc. I've got some news for you - women do all of these things from time to time, too, and if you're looking for a woman who never does this (or who is so insecure that she'll hide these things from you all the time), you're going to be looking for a long time, or might have to settle for a Real Doll. In addition to 'twardo's great advice, I would also say that starting to realize that women are not a different species will help as well. 20. I don't do bunkhouses for extended stays. I'll buy a stand up tent, $100 Blow up Queen size mattress $50 Couple of blankets and sheets pillows etc. $100 $250, 18 nights accomadation
  21. I took a training class through work recently and as an icebreaker we had to interview the person sitting next to us and introduce them to the class. We were asked to find out something interesting or unusual about that person. I went with skydiving, but I was more impressed with my partner, who is proficient in 9 languages (including four that I'd never even heard of). Of course people were pretty surprised on the skydiving thing even though 9 languages is a hell of a lot more impressive in my mind.
