Skylord and the Hop 'n Pop Deal with Each Other
nate_1979 replied to skylord's topic in Safety and Training
Hop-n-pops are awsome... It freaked me out the first time, but since then I have done a bunch of them, they make up 10% of my jumps now My first one was a little over 3k, my lowest to date is 2k, ... 5k I got time to do some flips and get terminal Good job guy FGF #??? :2:0 Only two jumps, one stand, one hop-n-pop, back hurting this weekend, taking it easy.. One of my friends did a tandem on saturday though, she had a blast, .. From the way she's talking, we just might have another skychick before too long FGF #??? I miss the sky... Nice going dude Is that #2 for you? Seeya Around. As far as RSL.. I have never felt that the RSL has fired my reserve before I got the handle out in either of my two cutaways. I've had the handle out both times before feeling anything, one reason (and a very small reason) why I got rid of it As far as the hang up, are you saying that because your ripcord was bent you dont think it fired? I threw my ripcord the first time, but on the second one there was definately a big bend / kink in my reserve cable that I had pulled out, where the RSL was attached to it... I always figured that mabey the RSL bent the cable when it pulled it, and I have felt the resistance of the reserve pull, kind figured that was me pulling the bent / kinked cable through the steel channel the cable travels through. I'm thinking about a white water rafting trip, next week... Right now I'm thinking I'd like to hit the American River Middle Section. I want to see if I can find a trip to get on Friday, then head up to Sundance Skydiving on Saturday, then back to san deigo on Sunday.. (Or mabey skydive at sundance friday and white water on saturday?) ... I've got a couple brocures for rafting trips , but if anyone has any other recomendations / contacts for white water rafting in that area, please let me know... Also, wouldnt mind finding someone else interested in taking the trip, eather going with me from San Diego or someone up there who just wants to hit the white water... It's been along time since I've done it, ... Really wanna do it again! FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't.

I dont know about that, ... I scuba dive, and I used to have problem diving a 12 foot pool! I used to *ALWAYS* get stuck at 8-10 feet on *EVERY* dive I did for awhile, It would take me forever to get deeper than that as my ears just took forever to equalize, regardless of what I did... I can now usually just blow past that depth, ears equalize with no issues.... I think that your ears do get used to it. That being said, this is totally different In scuba, I was able to stop the pressure change when I needed to by stopping my movement to deeper or shallower depths, I had control.. In skydiving, when your freefalling, your going and the only time it's gonna stop is when you pull.. I got my ears checked out by a doctor for the scuba stuff, and he told me that I had ears that would always have issues with equalizing just because of the way they were ... I have gotten past it. Good luck

Wow.... I'm glad that I jump gear that lets me make little mistakes without killing me, seriously their reasons for failure are obsurd. And no, I'm not saying that gives me a good reason to make little mistakes, clearly proper equipment maintenance and opening positions are important... But I prefer the reserve ride that I might get over canopy lines getting wrapped around flaps on my container resulting in a freaky ride or my death. Looking at those pictures, the only thing that comes to my mind is "DUH!" FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't.

But it does help, ALOT... I completely lost it in AFF, I couldnt arch worth crap, my flying just sucked, it was bad enough that I was told I had to goto the tunnel before they would let me fly again, it really was that bad.. The tunnel fixed that for me in a matter of minutes, I had no more stability problems after that. FGF #??? I miss the sky... naw, I think you got what I was told right... I agree it would be a really "bad luck day" to have such a malfunction occur, if it could... I would prefer to make that chance as low as possible though, a baglock just does not sound like something I want to take a chance with Although I dont really like stowing a ton of excess line under the bag in the container, I have not had any issues with this method either, and my openings have taken less altitude since I started doing it (which is ok because I was getting 800-1000ft openings) FGF #??? It was really nice to have, it helped me out alot after I failed AFF 3... And considering that I was having alot of trouble staying stable, I would have probably failed AFF 3 atleast 1 more time.. So, Definately not required, but I would highly recomend a good 10 minutes in it , it's amazing how much you can learn in that time.. FGF #??? I miss the sky... Actually, I hate it when people leave me a voicemail if it's not important info I need... If you leave me a voice mail that means that I have to waste my time listening to it and deleting it... If you dont leave me voicemail I can see that you called on my caller ID and call back when it's convenient for me, or you can call me back again later on FGF #??? I miss the sky... Saturday is my sky birthday, and my dad is going to come do a tandem...

Hey! That's what i'm doing to my friends tandem on saturday! FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't. -
Think it was more than that... but yea, I was actually pretty pissed about it, ... The thing that really pissed me off more than anything though was that a coach from the DZ that didnt work there could of had me up early in the day, recurrent, and I could have had alot of fun that day... Instead I got a coach jump at the *END* of the day, near the last load, and it was the only jump I got after sitting on the DZ the whole day. It wasnt like the instructers needed more work, they were busy, ... but now I'm ranting, and getting pissed thinking about it, so I need to stop Seriously.... Edited to add: And no, I'm not going to specify which DZ it was (someone PMd me asking), and it is not necessarily the DZ in my profile, mabey it is, mabey it isnt.. No comment.! FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't.
-
That'd be nice... I was gone for 3 months for a military deployment, needed a coach jump to get recurrent, and couldnt even use a local non-dz- employed coach, ... had to pay the DZ for one of their coaches, $$$. I had connections, just couldnt use them. FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't.

It was the best way I could think to describe the person, ... He's not a rigger, but he's one of the senior packers at the DZ, it's not an official title, but it implies that he has packed a couple parachutes here and there and has a lot of experience that I can learn from. He is also the person that trained me to pack for my 'A' license. FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't.

That "someone" was one of the senior packers at my DZ.. Yes, he did elaborate and showed me exactly how a baglock could occur, he stopped and showed me on the pack job that I had just bagged and stowed the lines on as I was about to put it into my container. I have had some interesting openings, but none of them have been baglock. And what I ment is that , how to put it, ... You have your stows which hold the bag shut, then I have 3 rows of stows below that on the bag, I'll number them rows 1 through 3, 1 being the closest to the stows which hold the bag shut.. Basicly, if Stow 1 has a large amount of line on the outer side of the rubber band, then the lines from stow 1 could get caught in the loop created by the excess line on stow 2, when it came time to deploy stow 2 would tighten around the lines of stow 1 and possibly prevent the deployment sequence from continuing. I can definately see how this could happen, .. clearly your not going to have those lines mixed like that, but I could see the lines just mixing, say, when your closing the container... It's just a possibility, far fetched mabey, but one I'd prefer to prevent. Another aspect too is that I've noticed the lines on my canopy definately get caught with eachother more so than other types of lines (my canopy is HMA), so I think from my limited knowledge that the capability of my lines grabbing eachother and holding are a big higher than some types of lines that might just pull apart, but I could be wrong. I also asked my rigger about this, and he confirmed with me that I should not have alot of line in my stows. As far as deployment since I started putting less line in my stows, I have noticed that it happens a bit faster than it used to, but people have told me that doesnt make much sense either, .. but I dunno .. I'm thinking that my time for line stretch might be shorter, mabey feeling a bit more on the initial opening jerk? Let me ask you a couple of questions: Who was that 'someone'? Did he elaborate and show you how and why that might happen? Did he have any specific examples? And more importantly, where you having any sort of deployment problems at the time? I'm thinking you must mean that as the lines unstow, the could wrap around other stows that are too long?? FGF #??? I miss the sky... Just make sure the seller is ok, with that... Many sellers (myself included when I sell stuff) will only accept paypal, because it's an instant verification of payment, I dont have to wait around for you to get a check, mail it to me, deposit it, etc... I used to use longer stows on my rig, until a few jumps ago when someone told me that if I have longer stows I am risking a bag lock, so I have changed my stows to small ones... The reasoning given to me made sense, the larger your stows the bigger the chance that lines from a later deployed stow could get caught in the loop of an earlier deployed stow, which would effectively stop the deployment process. (sorry if that doesnt make a ton of sense, I dont know how else ot explain it ) FGF #??? I miss the sky... learning to pack - starting to fear a cutaway

Just think, who cares most about your canopies opening? The answer to your fist question is probably the same person that will give you the best pack jobs I actually HATE jumping what I didnt pack now. FGF #??? I miss the sky...
