Transponders? Moutaineers have been using them for some time. as a professional ski patroller I was required to wear one at all times in case I ever became lost or buried in an avalanche. Have we really got to the point that skydivers need beacons? Not directed to the OP just a general question. Cell phones are only helpful if you can use them and know where you are. ELTs for all?

D B Cooper Unsolved Skyjacking
peckerhead replied to skyjack71's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
It was not uncommon back in the 60's and early 70's to have a drink or two during jumping hours. Or so I have been told, I didn't start until 1981 Here is one of my favorite bonfire stories.... Back when I first started skydiving my instructor told me about how great things were in the early days. They used to have fun, Real fun and it was perfectly natural to have a cooler of cold beer at the drop zone during the day. No problem, and it was self policing because if you had one two many you would just scratch and stay on the ground. But then the hippies started showing up....and they were smoking pot! So then they made a rule no smoking pot during jumping and the hippies said: Hey! you rednecks are drinking beer! If you can drink beer then why can't we smoke pot? "So, we had to make a new rule that you could not drink or smoke pot during jumping." I will never forget this.... He looks at me and says: "Those fucking hippies ruined our sport!" True story... -

Will a bag lock slow you down or increase your speed?
peckerhead replied to hackish's topic in Safety and Training
Highly unusual yes. But not impossible. In fact it has happened before. That is why it was being discussed as a possibility. -

I can't figure out why you would move my posts to this thread. I was in no way commenting on this subject but you have made it look as though I was. Whats up with that? I can understand moving entire threads from one forum to another but when you copy and paste individual posts from thread to thread then comments can easily be taken out of context. I really don't care if a baglock speeds you up or slows you down, it is a high speed malfunction and should be dealt with accordingly. In the incidents thread I was discussing the possibility that it was not a bag lock at all but rather a two out situation where the main was released before the canopy came out of the bag, thus giving the appearance of a bag lock. -

It is imperative that we study the details and outcome of this incident to prevent it from happening again It would be a dis-service to the deseased if we did not do so. I know it is hard but please either bear with it or don't read. Edit to add: I am sorry if that came off harsh. This incident is so disturbing for us because a rescue might have prevented a fatality. I think the events leading up to this is very, very important but we still need to have a system in place to care for people who don't land whole. An older jumper with health concerns would likely be looked for. But a young healthy guy can and did get overlooked. Come on folks, lets learn from this and never let it happen again. More later, What a fucking bummer! -
Once again the Ducks bring us to the edge and quack. Please forgive me for having faith. See ya all later, I am going to go put a paper sack on my head.

This might just end up in History and Trivia but here is a question for you low-timers... Who signed your certificate? Ottley signed mine.

I landed a 22ft Sac after a cutaway at 10 grand. I was only about 135lbs at the time. It was a difficult landing in strong winds, I think now a days they might refer to it as "extreme" Never heard of an 18ft sac but if there is such a thing I would think twice on that one.

How About Cutting SKYRIDE Some Slack?
peckerhead replied to skypapa's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I knew I could count on Nick to put a positive spin on a fucked up thread.... Some of my favorites over the years: Beagle Scravel Hill Beaver Oaks Hot Spur Harrisburg Sheridan Yakima Cline Falls Lost Prairie Madras Pullman Mosco Snohomish Kapowsin Lodi Toledo Tri- cities Richland Mollala Kennewick Hermiston Cedar Valley Heber City Hartwood Maytown Picton Well, you get the drift.....The list goes on but like Nick says there was no skydive this or skydive that. The landmark and the culture (or vibe as you call it now) was why we went there. It was romantic We have become our own worst enemy and we have seen it coming yet did nothing to stop it. -

GW#3143 DW#2378 I started jumping when I was 18 and got my gold wings at 25. School, work, and kids got in the way and it took almost 15 more years to get my diamond wings. At current pace I hope to reach double diamond within the next two years.

What's a better analogy for Wuffos?
peckerhead replied to steve1's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I don't even bother anymore.... Just agree with them! Pretend you are one of them! Try this>>> Whuffo: I would never jump out of a perfectly good airplane! You: Yeah! Those guys are CRAZY! "Even if the parachute opens when they land it is just like jumping off of a two story building!" And then tell them a story about how this guy who used to be a friend of someone you used to know jumped and his parachute "failed to open" They totally won't get it but you can smile on the inside. -
what do you think of the tempo reserve?
peckerhead replied to norcalbaker's topic in Gear and Rigging
Exactly! Several years ago I was at a riggers course and this young kid tells me that he got rid of his Tempo and bought a PD because they are much safer and fly alot better. When I asked him how many reserve rides he had and if he had ever jumped a Tempo.... His response was that he had no reserve rides. None! But somewhere along the line somebody convinced him that PDs are good and Tempos are bad. I tried to explain TSOs and so forth but his mind was made up. In my opinion Tempos are good solid reserves. The newer models are even better. The Smart is very similar and basically the new improved model. If you can't get a good landing on a Tempo then you have it overloaded or you need better training. For the record I have a PD, Smart, and a Tempo in my rigs. All about the same size (143, 135, 150) and I would not hesitate to jump ANY of them. I don't think the landings would be significantly different. -
I bet after she crapped in the cup they did the old switcheroo... They were probably just eating a cup of rocky road. If not....Wow! There are some sick chicks out there.
