  1. Nah, its a website of a pointless rag of a tabloid distributed free at Tube stations, most of which wind up dumped on trains.
  2. Have been doing some archival research for an undergrad dissertation lately, and came across this. I suppose some things never change.
  3. Where would Catholicism be without hell and eternal damnation?
  4. I'd imagine the Royal Navy's rules of engagement are very specific, probably included no opening fire without a hell of a lot of warning or only after being fired upon. I can't even begin to imagine the woe-is-me, look-at-the-evil-imperialist-British hoo-hah that Tehran would have kicked up if some Iranians were killed trying to board a British vessel. I'm sure they'll be considering a change to their RoE. (Maybe to include a loudhailer with 'Try any of that boarding shit and we'll blow you out of the water' in Persian on a repeating loop...)
  5. Heh, if Florida judges can break into tears thinking about Anna Nicole Smith then I daresay a cute bear might cause meltdown...
  6. I was depressed until you got to the teapots. [Seriously though, sheesh! There's something worryingly surreal about that list]
  7. All at once? Must have had an epic case of indigestion!
  8. Legislation passes because it makes good sound bites for politicians, opposing it would make politicians look bad, or it fits in with politicians' world views which tend to be over-simplified and elitist. That to me looks like a problem with the politicians, rather than the legislation. Isn't the US a democracy?
  9. How then does a reasonless or unreasonable piece of legislation get that majority of votes then?
  10. Surely Sunday papers are worse though?
  11. I blame this on the 1997 handgun ban.
  12. I saw Bolton on the BBC's Question Time last night. QT is usually a domestic political panel discussion, but last night's was a special Iraq War anniversary edition. Bolton was on the panel and came across as nothing less than extremely obnoxious, and deeply arrogant.
  13. Out of curiosity, what's the penalty for breaking that rule? A fine? Confiscation? A pretty harsh penalty, typically, esp if loaded. (a separate magazine with rounds would count). You probably won't be legally permitted to own a gun afterwards. I suspect that weapon would be confiscated, but you'd probably be allowed to sell off any others so long as they leave your possession pronto. If you want a precise answer, I can get it to you later, but it's certainly beyond just a fine. Thanks for the answer, and if it's no inconvenience, please do - I find the wide variation in gun laws quite interesting.
  14. Out of curiosity, what's the penalty for breaking that rule? A fine? Confiscation?
  15. The difference being, surely, that the 'nanny state' already regulates automobiles by requiring drivers to obtain a licence. Why then is personal responsibility enough to regulate guns, but not cars? Why aren't people allowed to certify themselves as safe drivers?
  16. West Germany? Date on those figures? I'm going to guess the Northern Ireland figure is related to paramilitary activity rather than conventional gun crime. What do you suppose the gun crime rate is in Iraq at present?
  17. Pearl Harbour brings tears to my eyes, but not of sadness...
  18. The coroner in this case has delivered his verdict and found the killing of L/Cpl Hull unlawful. BBC report: UK 'Friendly Fire' killing unlawful
  19. How are terrorist attacks analogous to school shootings? Was 9/11 similar to Columbine?
  20. Heh, you never know when that info might come in handy!
  21. There was a similar case in Britain recently, a middle aged woman who cooked with cannabis to alleviate pain was convicted on drugs charges and sentenced to 200 hours community service. I'm undecided on legalisation of recreational drugs, but this seemed like an uneccessay and and unhelpful conviction.
  22. Bit of a digression perhaps, but is it possible to live on $10,000 a year?
  23. I'm with you on this one. No system of justice that accepts the inevitable execution of the innocent can be considered just.
  24. Deaths among US servicemen down, or deaths of Iraqis as well? Surely the latter is a better yardstick.
