My sincere thanks to all the veterans, and their families, for their sacrifices to ensure our safety and freedom. You have my utmost respect. My grandfathers, dad, brother, & others in the family have all proudly served.

Get the Rig! What good is it going to FL anyway without a Rig?! The air up there in the clouds is very pure and fine, bracing and delicious. And why shouldn't it be? It is the same the angels breathe. — Mark Twain,

I had my first cutaway two weeks ago, 1:1 loading Sabre 1. Had good body position before pulling at 3.4k. I pull a little high as I roll it and need 0.8-1k till open. After all it's a Sabre 1. I had a lot of line twists and I managed to get out of approximately half of them before the canopy spinning became so severe that it had me horizontal. (Previously I had thought only tequila could cause spins this quick.) Reached my hard deck of 2k and cut away. My rigger confirmed that the left toggle had released hence the spins. I must not have stowed the toggle correctly, although I normally am really careful about toggle stowage. Live and learn. And yes....I bought beer... after I recovered my canopy 5 hours later from the swamp. Surprisingly only the pilot chute got a little wet. Everything else was suspended by the cattails. I now love cattails. The air up there in the clouds is very pure and fine, bracing and delicious. And why shouldn't it be? It is the same the angels breathe. — Mark Twain,

I agree. Unbelievable tragedy and couple of years with respect to natural disasters. My sympathies to those affected and their families. Hopefully we are done with more disasters for now and the upcoming years. Keeping my fingers crossed with respect to bird flu. Grounding Yourself For Wind
skydiver1717 replied to jumpjunkie2004's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I sit down if: Winds steady at 18-20 MPH. Or if 10-15 MPH gust range. Or if too turbulent, especially in hilly areas or where you get updrafts and rotors due to trees, buildings. If the tree tops are rocking, I generally stay on the ground and stay safe for another day. -

It's much better landing than Eloy or Perris as there is a tremendous amount of grass landing area, even an area for students and people of lower experience. I have never had a problem finding a non crowded area to land. They have great free coaching at the organizer tents for all levels of experience. I learn more in 10 intense days at Rantoul than I do during the rest of the year. After 8- 10 jumps, a few beers, sleeping is no problem. There is one dangerous aspect of Rantoul and that is merry making skydivers in golf carts without lights that hit poles, etc in the middle of the night. Use a flash light when driving your golf cart at night, put your tent in the middle of a row, then make merry with the best of them. Skydiving Culture - Anthropology Presentation
skydiver1717 replied to spidermonky's topic in The Bonfire
I'd also mention the extreme fashions and rigs, fitness consciousness, group dynamics, free beer for firsts and exhibitionism. Also the taboo to talk about what you do for a living. Unique vocabulary: wuffo, femur, bounced, bounce proof, biff-in etc. Not to mention how skydivers amuse themselves at the drop zone on cloudy days--must be related to the T-personality. Good luck. -
