There was Velcro at Pope. I borrowed a rig there that had TAPEWELLS. They looked kinda scary to me. The crowd at Pope was friendly to everyone. Newbies were not outcasts as they were at some other DZs. I only had about 60 jumps when I started at Pope and got a lot of patient RW coaching from superstars. Not certain why it closed. It was always a buzy DZ on weekends. Neighbors hated the take off noise. I spoke with one of them who was very bitter. She said their peaceful quiet valley was ruined by the DZ. On one load the pilot took us over nearby Lake Berryessa to show us "some hot babes". There were some naked women sunbathing on a secluded part of the shore. We were too high to see much detail as he passed over. I remember taking a different route home (to SF) one time and came upon an old airfield with a bunch of derelict Navy PV2 Harpoon patrol planes. I think it was Angwin or at least near there. An old timer at the field told me that it used to be an active DZ. Tried that and many other variants. Can't find anything indicating our pilot-skydiver Norton Thomas was a CA licensed lawyer. If he did time for a crime it would be unlikely (but not impossible) that he could get or keep CA bar membership. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. I remember Steve Haley from my days of jumping at Livermore and Antioch but I don't remember Norton. Jumped with Steve's sister many times at WFFC meets in Quincy and Rantoul Illinois and a few times at Lodi too, She is a gem of a person. Married one of my jumpmasters and he is a lucky guy. The NTSB accident report kinda rules out Norton being alive today if it is the one for his aircraft. Not only was debris spotted in the suspected crash area but also a body (not recovered). Sounds like a real high seas ditching disaster not a disappearance scam. Ferrying planes over oceans is a risky proposition. Most ferry tank setups do not have the capability for rapid fuel dumping. It is kind of pointless anyway since they carry little excess fuel. If you lose an engine and can't maintain alititude you want to shed weight fast and there is no way to do it. You are doomed to a slow descent into the ocean. A brand new PAC 750 skydiving plane on the last leg of a flight from NZ ran short on fuel approaching CA from HI. Encouraged by an airline pilot (ex USCG) who overheard the PAC 750 pilots concern, a MAYDAY call went out resulting in the dispatch of a USCG HC 130 that met the incoming PAC 750 a couple of hundred miles off the Monterey coast. The PAC 750 made a textbook ditching witnessed by the Coasties but all comms were lost and nobody exited the floating plane. The USCG does not have rescue jumpers, just rescue swimmers who can only launch from helos. It stayed afloat long enough for a Air National Guard HC 130 to reach it and drop a couple of PJs. The PJs reported the pilot was unresponsive, appeared dead and was still strapped in. The plane was sinking and they wisely decided not to attempt to extract the body. Hmmm... and I have been unable (so far) to find any record of the Beech 18 CA to HI ferry flight disappearance. It must have been mentioned in the CA newspapers and also the subject of an (NTSB? FAA?) accident report. USCG search too I'll bet. Commissioner, light up the searchlight. This is a job for Snowmman. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. strange. could he operate from another state license wise? maybe he got disbarred ? I checked disbarred too in CA Bar records, nothing. To practice law in CA he'd need to be a state bar member. You can appear in court in CA if you are licensed in another state but you have to get the court's and the CA State Bar's permission, pay a petition fee and the granting of the petition is just good for the one case in which it was filed. http://admissions.calbar.ca.gov/Requirements/ProHacVice.aspx No way to operate a legal practice based here without being a bar member in good standing. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Skydivers who knew him said Norton Thomas was a lawyer and represented motorcycle gangs and members. Oddly I can find no listing of him in the State Bar of California membership records and the list includes deceased CA attorneys. Basically if you were ever a CA bar member you are in the list. Bruce, Jo will claim she was only quoting Eng. She should admit her statement was misleading and untrue, and she should retract it, but that's hoping for too much. It's not a vicious attack. I remember the Meredith Bros. and their 206. It used to land in farmer Jensen's field right next to the Cal Club DZ in Livermore when the ground was dry enough. I thnk they also owned the 182 that John Lewis crashed in that same field. He was killed in the accident. Pope was the best DZ ever, at least for me. I doubt that Boeing has any interest in preserving info re. "Cooper" history. Nor much about 727 design or construction. Nor 727-100 drag/lift for 15 deg or 30 deg with gear down. I'm depressed. Cheer up. Don Kirlin had to get copies of a lot of that stuff to get the WFFC 727 cleared for skydive ops. It was submitted to the FAA. I disagree. Doesn't matter what you see on the ground. You need to know stairs can be opened in flight and that the plane can fly safely with them down. It's not obvious. That much in the slipstream with a long moment arm relative to CG might give a pitch down force. In a 21 Jan 97 Arizona Daily Star article about a presentation by Scott: "Once Cooper got his sack of money, he ordered Scott to fly as low and slowly as possible and drop the back steps." When you think about it that would be a very risky command. The crew would have been happy to drop him over the Pacific Ocean. "As low as possible" taken literally could have them flying at low AGL altitude that would have put Cooper at risk. Much safer to command a specific altitude that you know will give you enough AGL altitude to exit then perhaps freefall and then deploy. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Not a stupid question at all Georger. I've wondered myself. Most likely explanation is to assure sufficient height above terrain for a safe jump. That is something you'd worry about in a night jump or any jump where you can't see enough to get a reliable estimate of your altitude AGL (above ground level). Greco, the central figure in Peterson's book, sweats this very issue in his jump, after tipping the crew with a 20. Cooper knew at least something about 727s. The flight configuration commands strongly suggest that. A lot of people don't know the difference between flaps, elevators and spoilers much less what an appropriate flap setting is or that it is measured in degrees on a particular aircraft. On some planes it's measured in preset fractions such as one quarter, one half, etc. Also he definitely chose the right canopy. But, was it dumb luck or evidence of parachute knowledge?
