Yeah when it came out it was under 300,000 lbs so it categorized as a large like the Boeing 727 or a MD88 which is was going to replace. To be listed as a heavy (B747) aircraft must be capable of 300,000 lbs so more it didn't fit the criteria and a lot of airports where the B757 was intended to be used do not allow heavy aircraft to operate on a routine basis. So Boeing did not want it listed as a heavy because it would stand to lose a lot of orders from the airlines. Well the wake turbulence it created was as bad as a heavy so they created a separate standard for the B757 so it is still listed as a large but with it's own set of rules. In ATC we call it "wake turbulence". Depending on the weight/size of the aircraft we have to apply different separation standards between heavy, large and small aircraft and issue cautionary advisories i.e "Caution wake turbulence, departing B757". A Cessna 182 behind a Boeing 757 or a Heavy Boeing 747 or an Airbus can get flipped over very easily and it ain't pretty to watch.
