  1. BTW, I recognize that in this case, there was physical evidence that caused her to be convicted. My comment was not directed at this particular case, it was just a general statement. >>Not only that, but I don't think that we should ever convict someone solely on circumstantial evidence, no matter how convincing it is.
  2. A stay of execution was granted for Frances Newton. Personally, I'm willing to pay the money to find out whether someone is innocent. Not only that, but I don't think that we should ever convict someone solely on circumstantial evidence, no matter how convincing it is. I'm not against the death penalty; I'm just against putting innocent people to death. Quite frankly, being tried by a jury of my peers is a little scary.
  3. Haha! I didn't know that it was being smeared across the internet. I found out via an email from the Texas Moratorium Network. In hindsight, it makes sense that it is receiving a lot of press. However, here in Texas, putting someone to death is a pretty frequent occurrence so I didn't think anything about it.
  4. Gender is irrelevant to me. It just happens that this is a woman. Putting someone to death and knowing that they might possibly be innocent, no matter how small that chance, is reprehensible.
  5. Texans, Frances Newton is scheduled to be put to death today. The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles has asked Governor Perry for a stay of execution for 120 days. However, he has the option to disregard their request and proceed with the execution. I don't know if she is innocent or not, but I think it is worth further investigation. You can read more about this and email Governor Perry at: http://www.texasmoratorium.org/
  6. While I've never wondered about this particular thing, there are definitely things that I'm embarassed to admit that I've asked about or thought about that might just qualify as ignorant as this. In any event, I hope that someone told him about this and didn't make him feel stupid. The only thing that does is ensure that he'll keep the rest of his stupid questions to himself.
  7. Agreed. Perhaps this is more of a reflection of the training that he received rather than his intelligence. Also, maybe testing your cypress is common sense to some, but as a new person, I can't say that there's much about this sport that I feel is instinctive.

I believe that he is still the bassist for Ozzy. Ironically, Robert Trujillo, the former bassist for Ozzy is now the bassist for Metallica.
  9. Watching Supersize Me and reading Fast Food Nation go a long way toward getting people to understand why fast food really is bad for you. I think that a lot of people don't really understand what is meant by "that's bad for you" since there are no instantaneous ill-effects. I mean they don't have explosive diarrhea and aren't barfing up their lunch so what's so bad about it? The problem is that our bodies simply have not evolved to do anything with that shit, which is why we have such high rates of obesity, cancer, diabetes, etc. Something that I have never understood is advertisements for cheap food. Whenever I see an ad for a $.25 cent taco or burger I think to myself "what the hell did they put in it to get it that cheap". --- rant over ---
  10. I just recently finished AFF and it took me about 12 jumps. My instructors never referred to things in terms of pass/fail, they simply checked off the items as I completed them, which made me feel a lot better about my progress. Objectively, I knew what level I was at and whether or not I had passed, but it still did a lot to help my ego.
  11. I'm a health nut and have been shopping at WF for years. However, I recommend that you still look at the ingredient list before purchasing food. Sometimes, I'll find non-desert foods that have sugar, or something else bad, and am surprised they sell it.
  12. I'm not particularly a fan of Carlin, but this statement is right on: "They knew people were basically stupid and would believe anything they were told, so they announced that God had given them some commandments, up on a mountain, when no one was around. " I've always believed that religion was either mythology or came about because of the above. As a kid I was never able to understand or justify the stories in Sunday school. I remember being about 6yrs old and thinking "Come on, this is all you've got, you gotta be kidding me".
  13. I saw this documentary several years ago at SXSW. It was my favorite documentary that year and in fact it won the audience award for best documentary (or maybe it was runner up). Frequently, directors are available after screenings to take questions. For Okie Noodling, the director as well as some of the noodlers in the film were there, which was pretty cool. It's definitely worth checking out if you can find it.
