Well thank god that the TSA only thinks Casios can have altimeters... My Suunto is safe from scrutiny. I can just hear the screeners now, "better check that guy again, he's got a carry-on with a 'chute in it, he's wearing an altimeter, and he looks like he might just be crazy enough to start some trouble." Has anyone even thought to mention to the TSA that the pressurization of passenger planes renders the altimeters relatively worthless? NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

yeah... 1.4 would be a little high. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

A lightly loaded Nitron was recommended to me by Chris Martin when we were talking at length about canopy selection and inquired about demoing a Fusion back in Oct. I asked if it was an overly aggressive canopy given my experience level and he said I would be much happier with it at a light wingloading than a Fusion. I probably had 50-60 jumps at the time. I'd wait a bit longer before making a purchase personally. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

http://www.tsa.gov/public/index.jsp I don't know what the UK equivalent is but here more than you ever wanted to know about the TSA. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

Personally I would concentrate more on getting your license and quality coaching before worrying about gear. I waited until about 40-50 jumps or so before I bought my gear. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

That sucks man... I love hanging off the Skyvan... were you the guy wandering around the holiday boogie with your arm immobilized/strapped to your body? If so, I hope you heal fast. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

I was referring more to the fact that he doesn't have his license, doesn't own his own gear, and likely has some currency issues based on his profile. I am sure that he can find CReW specific gear to borrow, esp in SoCal given the large amount of skydivers out there, but he probably should work on getting the basics down first. I am all for learning CReW, in fact I just hooked up with a couple jumpers from Brush in Eloy that can get me involved with it when I get to CO in a couple weeks... but first things first, wouldn't you agree? I think they all look like sky-camoflage to me... I would definately try to interject some bright colored stripes and/or reflective piping if possible. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

Well, considering it will be a while until you can fly a wingsuit and do CReW, why not just focus on your belly skills, and take a canopy control course after you get your license. This will enable you to fly with others and make some fun group jumps and reduce the potential for landing mistakes. I have met people that are hardcore in every discipline. In my short experience it seems to me that people will naturally gravitate towards others they get along well with and end up working on the skills to jump with them more often then others, whether they be freefliers or bellyfliers. Sabre (not sabre 2) for first gear purchase?
mattjw916 replied to JeffSkydiver's topic in Gear and Rigging
To put in my 2 cents, I know several people that jump them and survive without many complaints. I have seen some with a larger slider and one with a pocketed slider, and one otherwise unmodded according to the owner that I talked to. I'd jump one, as long as I had a rigger I trusted check it out first. Good luck! NSCR-2376, SCR-15080 -
Congrats... I doubt you'd really want to go any higher in a Beech, those things are sooo slow. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

I agree. I didn't set any records there, but I had a great time nonetheless. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

So... is there a separate record for most DZ.commers to biff into the main landing area at Eloy during said record attempts? NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

I am the current owner of Skymedic's Safire 189 and after about 50 jumps on it I can safely report the openings are slow, predictable, and on-heading... and there is plenty of flare in the mid-range of the toggle stroke. I have never jumped a Safire without the mod but I am very happy with mine post-mod. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

There's plenty of empty tents at Eloy for the moment... come on down, we'll make you feel right at home. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

Generally when you demo canopies you want to do so using the same sizes (or as close as possible given the different measuring methods employed) so as to not create an apples to oranges comparison. Don't forget to try stuff other than just PD canopies... Precision, Big Air, Icarus, and others all have demo programs and make canopies you might otherwise have never considered. Personally I am really looking forward to demoing a Lotus when I get ready to try a 170 sometime in the future. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

I am sorry I missed people talking about me while I was outside making about a dozen skydives and amazingly I am still here and not even a scratch on me with the exception of sore shoulders from packing. But of course, it was all luck... it couldn't possibly have been all the reading, studying, practice, coaching, H&Ps, and perhaps even a modicum of skill. You know the problem with "one size fits all"... is that it really doesn't fit anyone perfectly in the end. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

Your Skydiving Goals for 2005?
mattjw916 replied to Dumpster's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
1. Remember that I have hobbies other than skydiving. 2. Not spend all my free time/money at dropzones. 3. Get my Coach rating. 4. Complete C license. 5. Swoop consistently & safely. 6. Have fun! NSCR-2376, SCR-15080 -

I think the general consensus is that Spectres open nicer than Sabre2s... and both are suitable for jumping camera. I know loads of people that fly cameras with pretty much every type of canopy out there. A canopy is only as safe as the person at the controls wants it to be. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
