Skydivers who don't deserve respect.
mattjw916 replied to Trae's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Um, so who's left? You just described 99% of the community. So being proficient somehow is a bad thing in your eyes? I guess that makes you one of the bullies then since you are put off by the freefly/swoop crowd and want to hold them back. Some of us just jump for fun you know and couldn't care less about the pedantic ramblings of yet another "old schooler" hell-bent on poo-pooing the latest generation. Come down off your cross, we need the wood for the bonfire bro. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080 -
like this? Use the built-in feature in Photoshop to create one it is under File - Automate - Web Photo Gallery or something. I am at work, so I can't post full instructions at the moment. edit: I fixed it NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

Sorry, but I call BS on whomever that was. Friction adapters in good repair can't trick you into thinking they are correctly routed. I think she needs more training. I always give mine a firm tug on the way to the door too. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

main reason I do it: the slack will never come undone and smack me in the face in freefall another reason: you can open/remove the chest strap faster since you don't have to feed the doubled-over end through the elastic, you just tug on it and it all comes out at once. Also, like Dave said, the keeper won't fall off since it would have to get over the buckle (not likely). I have a thick chest strap and it looks cleaner and is easier to remove/loosen under canopy. I don't care if people can't see if I routed it properly, I won't forget to do it since it's the first strap I tighten when I put on my rig. If someone was to yank my chest strap to check since they couldn't see it, I'd probably just smile and say thanks. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

Longest recovery arc: Safire1 or safire2?
mattjw916 replied to freeflydemon's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Yeup, some of the Precision-built Icarus canopies originally had the hard opening/poor flare problem. In addition, they are 7-8% smaller than the placarded size as talonsky said, i.e. my 189 is really a 175(ish) when using PD's measuring method. These canopies can be identified by red bartacks at the line attachment points on the canopy. My Precision-Icarus-Safire has an enlarged slider and Derek's (hooknswoop) control-line mod and opens slow and on-heading every time and has NEVER slammed me. Control range is lower in the toggle stroke than a Sabre2 which prompts the PD-bigots to say they have "weak flare" since they are accustomed to not flaring completely. I definately would not say that my canopy has a long recovery arc though. Seems about the same as the other couple semi-elliptical 9 cells I have jumped. Cheers NSCR-2376, SCR-15080 -
Fact: All Skydivers Have Hard Landings
mattjw916 replied to Sled14's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
If your profile is correct, I think you're speaking very soon. t I fixed it... and keep the negative vibes to yourself bro, the world's got enough of them already. I see no correlation between someone that wants to build the skills required for swooping a high performance canopy properly and the odds of going to the hospital. If anything it would be inversely proportional due the extensive coaching and the realization that you can't learn this stuff overnight. But, what do I know, I'm just a tourist, right? Fact: All Skydivers Have Hard Landings
mattjw916 replied to Sled14's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
do some people get hurt: yes does everyone get hurt: no YMMV, but I know plenty of people that have never had to make a trip to the hospital during their skydiving careers, myself included. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080 -
spoken by someone that talks about skydiving way more than he actually does it... go jump dude, when you get back up there you'll remember why staying current is a lot more important than replaying the incident ad nauseum in your mind. jump, if ya screw up, learn from it and move on... NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

If you want to jump, jump... sitting around and analyzing isn't going to improve your landings, practice will. Pull and flare are the only really important parts of the skydive anyway... NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

Anyone ever flown on a CRJ (Canadair jet) with their rig? Help fast!
mattjw916 replied to grue's topic in The Bonfire
My rig is about one size smaller than yours, but I had no problems fitting it in the overhead of a CRJ. I fly extensively for work as well. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080 -

Before you go experimenting, just pack it "normally", i.e. whatever method you are comfortable with, and see what the results are first. Unless you are pulling at 2k all the time, a 800-1000 ft opening won't be a big deal. Besides, 3500 is the max deployment altitude during the Holiday Boogie at Eloy. I'd try to be as current as possible, and comfortable with your canopy, before the boogie so that you can land out or x-wind without soiling yourself. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

Send it to the manufacturer for a formal inspection and provide written documentation to the insurance company (such as results of said inspection) that it is/is not airworthy and why plus replacement costs if applicable. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

Even if you take away their license and kick them out of the USPA, there are plenty of DZs in the US that aren't USPA group members, or don't like the USPA, and will happily let them jump. The skydiving community is so small, things like this tend to sort themselves out, either that or the person quits, in my short experience. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

Generally, when people are talking about "hard housings" they are referring to the channel that the excess cutaway cable is stowed in on the back side of the rear risers after the yellow cable is passed through the white fabric loop. The advantage of this is that in the event of severe line twists a "hard housing" made of metal or other suitable material will protect the excess cutaway cable from being trapped when the risers are severely twisted and prevent/reduce the possibility of a hard/impossible cutaway. Please seek a qualified rigger for a better explanation. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

If they were wearing their rigs, how on earth could you see under their risers and know if they had hard housings or not? NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
