  1. Twenty-five is the last cool birthday. After that they all suck. At my 25th birthday party a good buddy of mine put his arm around me and said "Remember 20?" I nodded, and he replied, "seems like yesterday, doesn't it?" I nodded again, and he said, "that's how far away thirty is." Yuck. I just turned 29 a couple of weeks ago. Thirty's loomin' large, and 20 still seems like yesterday. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
  2. Ya'll just keep that shit put away from now on. I'm coming to AOT. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
  3. "Bank" as in checking/savings account, or including retirement and investment accounts? --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
  4. Duh - so you can make sure your goggle tinting matches your jumpsuit. The most important thing about buying gear is to make sure you look cool on your way to the plane and in photographs. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
  5. Your instructors wouldn't let you go if they didn't know you were ready. You'll do fine. Just stay calm and do what you know you are supposed to. Talk to your instructors about your what-if question. I was nervous before my hop-n-pop. Afterwards I wondered what all the anxiety was about. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
  6. This thread is a total bummer. We (skydivers and BASE jumpers) are a tiny minority who share a very similar passion. We are viewed collectively by the population in general as a bunch of death-embracing morons good for nothing more than providing occasional advertising and faces-of-death type footage. Most people out there wouldn't have a second thought about making both our lifestyles very difficult. And yet, here we are finding a way to divide ourselves into two camps and beat each other up. Lame. We need to be able to talk about this without making broad, insulting, generalizations. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

    Pallywood

60 Minutes did not produce that report - some of their footage was just used in it. I was confused about that a bit at first myself. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
  8. Here's a couple taken from the boat. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
  9. Some more pics. All the sharks were great whites, most between 5 and 10 feet. I saw one while I was in the cage that was probably over 12. No monsters, but still plenty big. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
  10. Just last week I was in Capetown, South Africa with my girlfriend and went shark diving. I bought one of those cheapie underwater disposable cameras and actually got a few decent shots. The seas were rough, and we bounced all over that cage, but it was an incredible, surreal experience. I was unbelievably cold for the first few minutes. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
  11. Fear is good. It means you are not crazy and will keep you safe. I still have an existential moment in the door every so often. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
  12. Not a pet. More like my hunting partner. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
  13. Suck it up, cupcake. You're probably jumping student gear right now with one-size-fits-none adjustable harnesses. Once you get your own gear it will be worlds more comfortable, even if it isn't custom. In the meantime, I found that wearing spandex under my clothes helped a little. Another guy swore by his padded biking shorts. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
  14. You're all crazy, I say. I'll probably do it myself too, when I am there. That's not crazy - that's by far the safest way to do it. That way, if you screwed up and have a super-fast opening you're not at terminal, so you don't get smacked as hard. At Dallas, and many others, hop-n-pops jump at 5 grand, so if you deploy right away you are deploying higher than virtually all full-alititude jumps, so you have more time to deal with it if you did pack a mal. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
  15. Square 1 has never done me wrong. Reliable, fast, good service, and seems to be decent prices. Or, call the dropzone he uses and get a gift certificate from them. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
  16. I'm guessing you didn't get the response you were looking for. Your cousin needs to move to the city where she belongs. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

  18. I looked at highway stats a year or so ago and calculated that one skydive is, on average, as likely to kill you as 30 miles on a motorcycle on the highways. Seems pretty even to me. Of course, it all depends on how you ride and how you skydive, but it at least shows they are in the same ballpark. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

    Loser

Hey, genius, public urination is already illegal, and vandalism and destruction of property are already illegal as well, so I'm not exactly sure what your point is. Or do you think it should be okay to whip it out in public? --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
  20. I dunno - my PADI instructor told me that his insurance costs less than a buddy's of his who teaches bowling. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
  21. More likely they'll high five each other and laugh about what a good gig they've got stoking the passions of their respective followers. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
  22. It always amuses me when I hear liberals bemoan the end of freedom as we know it because of the privacy and other invasions of Republican administrations. These transgressions are miniscule compared to the wholesale anal-probing we all get during tax season, yet they think we should all gladly smile and shake the taxman's hand for allowing us to do our civic duty. If these libs were serious, they'd also rail against the constant and never ending presence of the IRS in our families, our homes, our businesses, and our bank accounts. Until then, they're just pissin' in the wind. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
  23. My girlfriend and I are traveling to South Africa for a buddy's wedding. We'll be spending most of our time in Durban, and won't pass up the opportunity to log some jumps on another continent. I hear Skydive Durban is a great place to jump. We'll be in Southern Africa from July 11th to the 30th, though some of that time we'll be in Capetown, Zimbabwe, and on a photo safari. Can someone recommend any time in particular we should try to make it out to the dz, are there any events going on? Also, any tips on how to make the best of Skydive Durban would be appreciated. Thanks! --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
  24. I dunno. I don't think these munitions are going to be the dissent-silencing jackpot many would hope for. They aren't evidence of any ongoing program, and they don't sound particularly viable. For all we know they were simply forgotten about. That's why I don't think the Administration is pushing the news very hard. That being said, I still support the war. I just don't think anyone should make too large a rhetorical investment in this release, at least as it stands now. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
  25. Yeah, my spreadsheets really turn my crank. Course, getting beat up by the CFO over an analysis he disagrees with can be exciting. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
