Does the IR receiver have to work under water? Water absorbs most IR wavelengths over a short distance.

That should just about cut self-inflicted-injury hunting accidents down to zero.

melba toast - for the wedding scene "I'd like to propose a toast "--- throw toast bic lighter - for the scene where Janet is walking around with a candle, also for just about any scene involving light or fire... local customs differ cards- for the scene near the end where Frankie sings about "dealing cards for sorrow, cards for pain" spray bottle of water newspaper- when Brad and Janet are walking from the car to the castle in the rain, put the newspapaer over your head and squirt water up into the air toilet paper- use instead of rice for the wedding scene and/or for the scene where they take the bandages off Rocky most theaters aren't really happy about rice being used

Well, it is a bad idea to use decongestants to clear your sinuses for skydiving, just like it is bad idea to use them for scuba diving. That said, the all around best decongestant out there is oxymetazoline HCL in a a nasal spray... usually the twelve hour kind, like Afrin.

The longest I've gone without meat is three months. Right now I'm a social meat eater... I don't make meat for myself, but if someone brings a tasty steak to Lost Prairie I'm all over it. Other than that I eat fish, and wild game. The reasons: 1) mad cow disease ... I'm waiting for the numbers on this one 2) sustainability... it takes less space, water, and energy to make tofu 3) factory farming sucks 4) the waitress in the local vegetarian restuarant is SO hot 5) vegetarian women taste great, and I suspect this cuts both ways

Difference between resumes for job and for school?
skiskyrock replied to kelel01's topic in The Bonfire
The factors for getting into grad school seems to be: 1) funding ... is your employer footing the bill? 2) see 1) . . . 15) interview 16) transcript 17) standardized test scores I wouldn't waste time on the resume. If you have one, just give them that. You might want to put the education section of the resume first, and alter the section to emphasize any factors that relate to the degree you are seeking. Volunteer work is good... it shows that your are willing to do more than the minimum. On thing I would reccommend is to find out who is on the list of profs that will be interviewing you, then haul yourself to the library and read their most recent publication, and their most cited publication. Resist the urge to tell them how much you enjoyed their classic paper on slug sex phereomones. -
Ah Hartford, the filing cabinet of New England. It close to Connecticut Parachutists in Ellington. You can be skiing in Vermont in two hours... other than that it doesn't have much attraction. I lived in Guilford for a few years and drove through Hartford dozens of times... never found a reason to stop.

I was on a first date w/ a psychologist. I asked her why she decided to go out with me, and she said "It's really unusual for some on with your personality type to live as long as you have". She had and identical twin sister, too... sigh.

It sounds like the classic symptoms for an idle air controller failure. My '94 probe used to do this every couple of years. This won't do you much good since you bought a new one (the Probe version was very expensive and hard to find), but they can be cleaned. The warning label that says not to use solvents is mostly BS. There is a thermowax cold start thingamabob that can be damaged by solvents, but if you take the IAC completely out of the car, it is pretty easy to see what needs to be cleaned without hosing everything down with Gumout.

For a lot of things I wouldn't bat an eye at a 98% rating, but computers seem to be a huge problem area on ebay. I bought a Mac last year on ebay from someone who a good rating but didn't primarily sell computers. I especially like the feedback from a few days ago where the buyer's payment was returned because the seller wasn't at the address (maybe because he can afford a plane ticket out of town , now). Look on the bright side, if it wasn't a mac, you were at least partially screwed either way.

trunkmonkey (not for peta types) funny video
skiskyrock replied to bodypilot90's topic in The Bonfire
Actually, there is only a 3% difference in the DNA (this figure was from an old study from before the human genome project) Complete sequencing of the chimp DNA was recently done and the difference was put at 5%. This sounds close until you realize we share about 60% of our DNA with watercress. A human brain is about 4 times the size of a chimp's. -

I actually SAW one of the rodents this morning!!!
skiskyrock replied to ACMESkydiver's topic in The Bonfire
Rodents of unusual size? I don't believe they exist. -
Google "Nuclear bomber" sometime. The project got as far as flying a bomber with a functioning reactor aboard. Shielding was a problem, but they envisioned a bomber that stayed airborne continuously and the crews shuttled on and off as they reached their dose limit. Five minutes to altitude, but you'll take 50 rads on the way up.

Travel ideas for Vancouver, BC in mid-Sept.
skiskyrock replied to VanillaSkyGirl's topic in The Bonfire
I was just up there. Other people hit the main points (Victoria, Butchart Gardens, Granville Island). If you take the ferry to Victoria as a passenger it is cheap and scenic. If you take a car along, it's just scenic. I'd also recommend seeing Gastown and the Sun Yat Sen Chinese garden. Just outside the city is Indian Arm, a fjord that runs back into the mountains. You can rent sea kayaks there, and it is a beautiful paddle. There are all sorts of tiny islands you can haul out ... bring a lunch. There is also a huge adult toy shop called something like Womyns Work... didn't get to see that one, but the guidebook mentions it. Remember to keep all of your receipts... Canada will refund the taxes on some purchases. -
Another friend dead. Can someone help me to understand it.
skiskyrock replied to homer's topic in The Bonfire
I think it boils down to which comes first, the decision to commit suicide, or the the depression. If you sit down and rationally decide that the best thing to do is kill yourself, that HAS to be a bit depressing. On the other hand, if preexisting depression is coloring everything you see, it is hard to make rational decisions. It makes it harder to see the future beyond the immediate situation, too, and I've always felt that failure of imagination is behind a lot of suicides. If you can see a future, you can work toward it. We need a word that means the opposite of suicidally depressed for people who persist in living despite a whole stack of rational arguments against it. A former co-worker of mine went through a series of semi-suicidal episodes (one of which could potentially have taken a few other people with him). He pulled himself together long enough to sell one child and beat the other to death. He has one surviving/unsold child, and I've always wondered which way would have been easier for her. -

A friend of mine brought his ibook to a party and hooked it the TV and stereo. Periodically we would realize that no one was talking, and we had been staring vacantly at the screen for twenty minutes. The "buy ipod" and "buy a G5" subliminal messages kick in after ten minutes or so.

Passed out under canopy: watch those leg straps!
skiskyrock replied to NWFlyer's topic in Safety and Training
USPA-I'm not the right sort of doctor, but it seems like it could be orthostatic hypotension... g-load+ tight leg straps= pooling of blood in the legs leading to decreased volume and blood pressure. She may not have reacted well to the drop in BP or to the increased heart rate to compensate (hypoxia? beta blockers?). Krisanne- glad you are all right. Any loss of conciousness not acompanied by an empty tequila bottle or new tatoo should probably be checked out by a doctor. -
plan A : The world is full of assholes.... learn to deal. plan B : Obtain: 1 tasteful art object (must be high quality, suited to bosses taste, likely to be placed prominently in house, at least partially porus), 20-100 milligrams of (1Z,5E)-1,10(14)-Diepoxy-4(15),5-germacradien-9-one , the cockroach equivalent of the funky cold medina (commercially available from chemical suppliers). Apply the (1Z,5E)-1,10(14)-Diepoxy-4(15),5-germacradien-9-one to the porus areas of the art object, send to boss as annonymous gift. He'll have the sort of bug problem you usually only read about in the book of Genesis.

I used to work for Hershey R and D. The Hershey bar sucks, as milk chocolate goes. We know this, but it is what the consumer wants that counts. If you want good chocolate, try a Hersheys Symphony bar.... maybe not quite as good as Dove milk chocolate, but a good chocolate none the less. Cadbury chocolate is made by Hersheys in the US, and it is good to.

It was obvious a few months ago when he made the announcement that he was in bad shape. I know there is an element of personal responsibility in smoking, but after seeing my grandfather die of emphysema, my grandmother die of lung cancer, my father survive lung cancer, my mother be diagnosed emphysema, I just wonder how in the _HELL_ people that work at Phillip Morris can get up and go to work in the morning.
