  1. Speaking as a Canadian living in the U.S., I believe the streaker's behaviour is representative of how we ex-pats are feeling after Bush's re-election: get the hell out of here as quickly as possible at any cost before anything goes seriously wrong.
  2. I'm Canadian but live in the states so I can't actually vote. If I could vote here however, I would vote for the dumpster behind my apartment before I'd vote for Bush.
  3. #1) Rambo II takes place after the Vietnam war #2) Yes, it was intended to appeal to both disenfranchised war veterans and consciencious observers alike, however contains very little if any educational value whatsoever. #3) Even better than Full Metal Jacket, read Michael Herr's 'Dispatches', it's a brilliant and pointant depiction of what he witnessed as a Vietnam war correspondent. #4) Nobody answered your question: yes, in theory you could do that jump out of a Gulfstream. No, it wouldn't be a very good idea. While he might clear the wing assembly he could get taken out by the low horizontal stablizer. But yes, it is possible, albeit incredibly stupid. #5) If Col. Troutman actually gave a rat's ass about Rambo he should've ponied up the extra greenbacks for a Pilatus PC12.
  4. QuoteThese 2 men didnt want to die, they wanted attention. reply] Not necessarily. Being from Vancouver, Canada orginally myself, a gun is a difficult thing to come by in Canada. These tormented (not to mention uncreative) souls are left with few options for taking their own lives, aside from hurling themselves off a bridge. Imagine trying to make your first skydive with hundreds of people watching you about to jump. Maybe it is about attention but either way, suicide is still the most selfish act one can commit; the effects on one's family and friends are devastating to say the least. This selfishness compounded with the method (stopping all traffic in a city of 2 million people) is truly morally incomprehensible and unforgiveable.
  5. /2/2 Took a friend out for his AFF#1 and did a couple really fun sit-flys. A first jump on new gear and incidentally also my first jump on a 190.
  6. Either 'The Hollow Men' or 'The Wasteland' by T.S. Eliot, the latter of which being too long to reproduce here. 'The Hollow Men' T. S. Eliot (1925) I We are the hollow men We are the stuffed men Leaning together Headpiece filled with straw. Alas! Our dried voices, when We whisper together Are quiet and meaningless As wind in dry grass Or rats' feet over broken glass In our dry cellar Shape without form, shade without colour, Paralysed force, gesture without motion; Those who have crossed With direct eyes, to death's other Kingdom Remember us -- if at all -- not as lost Violent souls, but only As the hollow men The stuffed men. II Eyes I dare not meet in dreams In death's dream kingdom These do not appear: There, the eyes are Sunlight on a broken column There, is a tree swinging And voices are In the wind's singing More distant and more solemn Than a fading star. Let me be no nearer In death's dream kingdom Let me also wear Such deliberate disguises Rat's coat, crowskin, crossed staves In a field Behaving as the wind behaves No nearer -- Not that final meeting In the twilight kingdom III This is the dead land This is cactus land Here the stone images Are raised, here they receive The supplication of a dead man's hand Under the twinkle of a fading star. Is it like this In death's other kingdom Waking alone At the hour when we are Trembling with tenderness Lips that would kiss Form prayers to broken stone. IV The eyes are not here There are no eyes here In this valley of dying stars In this hollow valley This broken jaw of our lost kingdoms In this last of meeting places We grope together And avoid speech Gathered on this beach of the tumid river Sightless, unless The eyes reappear As the perpetual star Multifoliate rose Of death's twilight kingdom The hope only Of empty men. V Here we go round the prickly pear Prickly pear prickly pear Here we go round the prickly pear At five o'clock in the morning. Between the idea And the reality Between the motion And the act Falls the Shadow For Thine is the Kingdom Between the conception And the creation Between the emotion And the response Falls the Shadow Life is very long Between the desire And the spasm Between the potency And the existence Between the essence And the descent Falls the Shadow For Thine is the Kingdom For Thine is Life is For Thine is the This is the way the world ends This is the way the world ends This is the way the world ends Not with a bang but a whimper.
  7. I'll pay you not to learn Stairway...
  8. You need some classics in the repertoire for sure: Margaritaville Brown Eyed Girl American Pie Father & Son And it's always good to know lots of Ben Harper & Jack Johnson.
  9. Buddy Angus... Oh yeah, baby....
  10. Just got back from another surf trip there. I agree with all the above suggestions but would add Montezuma, Mal Pais/Santa Theresa, all located on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula. As for the DZ, it was supposed to be in Playa Esterillos, just south of Playa Hermosa (south of Jaco). I went hunting for it with a Costa Rican friend of mine from the area and no one in the area knew anything about it. Let's just say I'm glad I didn't have my rig down there with me. Have fun, it's a beautiful and safe country.
  11. Is there a "D, none of the above" option?
  12. Hey...It's your 'puter. True, however I fear that one of my female or gay friends may have tampered with the delicate heterosexual masculine balance of my music collection... (As I now sit here listening to Goldfinger's cover of the Cure's "Just Like Heaven" and Dashboard Confessional's "Swiss Army Romance"...)
  13. Nornally I wouldn't respond to such a banal thread. However, the music library in my computer is playing on random and happens to be playing: "Lovefool" by the Cardigans off the Romeo & Juliet Soundtrack. (Yeah, I know....) How this got into my computer is anyone's guess...
  14. That is definintely one of the funniest things I've seen in a while. I particularly love the: "Motion for Psychoanalysis", "Motion to Impeach Judge Alaimo", "Motion to Renounce Citizenship" and "Motion to Exhume Body of Alex Hodgson". However, my personal favorites are: "Motion for Skin Change Operation" in which he desired the government to fund a sex change for him, and the "Motion for Catered Food Services" in which he complained about the prison food and moved for a court order allowing him to "receive catered food from some credible responsible business establishment preferred and paid for by Plaintiff." That's some funny shit. I'll try that in my Moot Court competition this fall...
  15. Law library? Is that the place with all the books? Do I ever love Westlaw and Lexis... "Adventurous attorneys: Texas lawyers test their limits for thrills and relaxation" Nice!!
  16. Apparently I am a: Testicular horse-cock boy who love to grow lesbians... All I can say is: right fucking on!!!
  17. Always an interesting convo... For me, veggie. However, I have been known to enjoy seafood I catch and/or gather myself. My reasons: MANKIND'S CURRENT LEVEL OF MEAT CONSUMPTION IS TOTALLY UNSUSTAINABLE. (If you don't know what sustainability is, do a little research, you may just learn something about yourself and the world around you). The earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the earth. PS - No, I'm not a hippie in the slightest, I've just begun taking small steps to not live quite so selfishly.
  18. One more law student right here. I agree with lawrocket's sentiments (although I'm not sure how he has this much time to be online as an attorney...) Just make sure you don't sue any DZ's or manufacturers. It's hard enough for them in the litigation-frenzied climate of this country. As for the law student support group, I'm all for it as long as we can keep the cliched law jokes to a bare minimum.
  19. Hi Clark, I'm a newbie that started jumping at SSD in the spring and have found there are definitely a few over-100's but non-skygods willing to impart some of their knowledge and experience, not to mention jump with newbies. Keep hunting around, asking questions, and bringing beer, after all, those skygods started somewhere. I think some of the experienced jumpers actually really enjoy jumping with us newbies, particularly if they're interested in pursuing an AFF instructors rating.
  20. I don't see it. Well, here is one that listened. And here's another one. I think you highly experienced jumpers need to hear once in a while that your advice doesn't fall on deaf ears. I've learned a lot from the threads on dz.com and just want to say thank-you. Keep it up guys, we nubes really are listening and, speaking for myself, acting on your advice by following a safer progression into the sport.
  21. a) How the f@#$ did you come up with that link so quickly? (You sicko...) b) This research suggests that 95% of cats would survive freefall from altitude... c) Nevermind skyballs/spaceballs. We could freefly with a live cat....
  22. Manual transmission is the only way to go (unless perhaps you spend half of your life in stop & go L.A. freeway traffic). I own a truck and spend a lot of time getting stuck on beaches down the Baja. Having a manual transmission makes a big difference in maximizing torque control on slippery surfaces. Automatic trannys are for trannies...
