Tandem Progression is a method that is blended into other types of Training, a hybred type of training if you will. Some places do 3 Tandems and then move on to the AFF Cat "C" or "D" jump. Others do the Tandems and move into IAD or Static Line Jumps. Find out which method the DZ uses, spend a little time there and talk to the Instructors, just to get a feel for it all. I am the former 101st Freefall Safety Officer who called the Tullahoma number and got SKYRIDE! I asked about contracting and when the legal paper work to make the deal was brought up and the FEDERAL LAW that governs it all, then, and only then, did the operator tell me she was at ASC, but they OWNED the Tullahoma facility, but it would not be operating again till Spring of 2005. She then listed off the Skyride Affiliated DZ's in KY I could contract with. Since Ft. Campbell's Consumer Affairs office had Skyride complaints, I chose not to go any where near that ball of wax. I read this thread prior to taking my Course with Kip of Air Rage at www.startskydiving.com. I saw the various opinions and even went and got a few more from others who took Kip's and others Courses. After I waded through all the info I decided to take Kips course. I don't think the standards from USPA are too low, but maybe not always enforced. With Kip they are enforced. If you do the pre-course and course with him he wont let you waste your time on the course if he is not sure you up to snuff. He worked me hard and had me breathing heavy after each jump with the amount of stuff he threw at me. One other candidate said it was to much and not realistic ( I actually agreed for a second or two). But it was whining/feeling sorry for my self/ I should be doing better BS! another AFF-I and I had a Cat "A" yesterday who must have had Kips "Bad" Student Dive Flow Card, but since we had been there and done that in the Course it was a none issue for us. We controlled the exit, the student, the dive and when the bulb flickered out we even controlled the deployment, all as evaluated and to standard. The student landed safe and even on video admitted (with out prompting) how bad he was. My point: The rating is not to easy. But it is only my opinion. An Instructors first concern is student safety. And if a 7711-2 was submitted and a 7711-1 issued (depends on what the local FSDO saw around the sight for "congested") the Demo should have been canceled by the special provisions. Glad no one was hurt, and that yes some thought skydiving was cool and the jumpers got treated well. But I am even "Gladder" no one got hurt and put a negative light in focus on our sport from a Demo that should have been at least postponed till proper re-arrangements could be made. Of the Army's Teams I only know of Two more: the "Silver Wings" and "Screaming Eagles". I wish I could but I just got back in from being on the road nine days and am looking forward to jumping the new Ch-47F a few times this week. Ft.
