“No American whose great-grandfather was born here is watching soccer”
aphid replied to Amazon's topic in The Bonfire
Some of tweets below the story are freakin' hilarious! (My favourite: Tim Howard could have saved my parents marriage) -

The keep for the US side certainly deserved game honours today! In a decidedly one-sided contest he single-handedly kept the US from being completely humiliated. -

4th-gen Canuck - does that count? If so, I must confess I've taken to cheering for... USA. Through to 16, but I thought their outing today was a bit lame. -
"A memory hole is any mechanism for the alteration or disappearance of inconvenient or embarrassing documents, photographs, transcripts, or other records, such as from a web site or other archive, particularly as part of an attempt to give the impression that something never happened. The concept was first popularized by George Orwell's dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four where Big Brother's Ministry of Truth systematically re-created all potential historical documents, —in effect; re-writing all of history to match the often-changing state propaganda. These changes were complete and undetectable." (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memory_hole)

Spent a night in Holbrook, AZ this spring just to sleep in one of these icons on Route 66.

It's apparent that your comment was indicting Trudeau & the federal Liberals, however for the record, the ruling BC Liberal party has come out fairly strongly in favour of Northern Gateway. Yup, THAT British Columbia - home to all the granola-munching, bicycle-riding, pot-smoking lefties. This one gets my 'affirm'.

In 2000, we were down team-training 4way at Elsinore and on an off-day, 3 of us went down to San Diego, picked up tickets from a scalper, and were there for the Padres Home Opener. We got in the front gate a touch early, and what do we see? One, and only one Padre, standing in the middle of the crowd, verbally welcoming fans to the ballpark, smiling huge and shaking every hand offered (including mine). I had wanted to take in the game just to see Randy (Big Unit) Johnson pitch for the visiting AZ Diamondbacks. Instead, I went away from the game incredibly impressed by the down-to-earth superstar that was Tony Gwynn. RIP Mr. Gwynn. You sir, were a class act.

Absolutely. I usually only ask questions, correct errors when Canada is invoked in some discussion, and occasionally offer an outsiders perspective, so that shouldn't be difficult at all. Regards John

I'm quite sure that was intended to be nothing greater than a cute play-on-words. Nonetheless, kindly keep your 2nd Amendment debates and questionable comments regarding this specific incident on your side of our conjoined border.

Were they called "hero's" when they came home? The ones that weren't charged likely received conventional discharge papers and possibly lived out the balance of their days as members of "The Greatest Generation" by association.

In recent memory, I've seen people in this forum angry that... - The President authorized the extra-judicial drone attack & killing of an American citizen on foreign soil, - The administration allegedly failed to act promptly and properly to save Americans in Benghazi, - Negotiated the successful return of a hostage American soldier who some would vilify for allegedly being AWOL or a deserter. On this, the latest turn, perhaps some might wish to read The Deserters by Charles Glass for some perspective. "Some 50,000 American and 100,000 British soldiers deserted from the armed forces in the Second World War. Thirty-eight thousand of them were tried for attempting to evade hazardous duty by some dishonourable means." link: http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/books/2013/08/23/the_deserters_by_charles_glass_review.html

I agree. Non-partisan. I enjoyed it as well and look forward to Part II. John -
Nice ride, Jerry. I just spoke today for my 2014 CVO Breakout (HD), in silver. Can't wait to ride it thru the Bent Prop too. John

I used to think people from Canukistan were mostly sane.

On the surface, it's possible the actions from the families of the decedents are driven by insurance companies attempting to recover losses the insurers may have incurred through payouts to the surviving family/parents. The counter-suit may simply be the result of an ambulance-chaser (yes, we have some of those here ) preying on the fears of the driver and attempting to keep any settlement from the first actions as small as possible. Just a guess on my part. ETA: While the links are probably factually correct, both of those media outlets do have a reputation for tabloid-style journalism. -
I rarely notice banner ads, but this one surprised me here on DZdotcom

My sincere thanks.

My shares in TransCanada Pipe and Westcoast Transmission have been very very good to me.

Don't sweat it Phil. If our neighbours don't want it, China is champing at the bit for the westcoast pipeline and deep-water port at Kitimat to ship it to Asia. Their money is just as green, and that's the growth-market now anyway. J

(excerpted from the link below) While the 2004 film painted Rusesabagina as the savior or more than 1,200 people who escaped certain death at the UN-protected Hôtel des Mille Collines, Rwandan groups have since accused him of revisionist history, genocide denial and profiteering off the refugees he sheltered. The Toronto Sun reported that the the Rwandese Canadian Association of Greater Toronto had asked the government to not issue Rusesabagina a visa to attend the We Day event, even alleging in a letter that “he charged refugees to stay in the hotel. Failure to pay, you would be let out of the fence and meet your death by militia.” source: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2011/12/29/romeo-dallaire-hotel-rwanda_n_1174607.html

Not just Texas: http://www.ksbw.com/news/central-california/salinas/king-city-police-chief-miller-and-exchief-baldiviez-arrested/24662946 I am very sympathetic to the good/clean cops, and I do believe they are still the significant majority. It must be incredibly disheartening to face daily an image grotesquely stained by the actions of some other officers.

Bear in mind the Jamaican's earned their spot legitimately by meeting the minimum's at a World Cup event earlier. -
You lose that bet, Rob. The door opens to reveal the entire contents. We share but we don't give it away willy-nilly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gper3YkzMg Canada. Fuck yeah! (Not that I'm looking anywhere in particular when I say that...) John

So do you assholes only watch the summer olympics, or what?
aphid replied to grue's topic in The Bonfire
Two of the the three sisters from Montreal in Moguls winning both gold and silver in the same event was pretty sweet. The Swiss female hockey goaltender deserved every accolade she got after backstopping her team in the 5-0 loss to Canada. If anybody else had been between the pipes, the score would have been more like 17-0. Speaking of the Swiss, I am breaking ranks with my countrymen in one specific event and am cheering for Team Davos - Ott (Mirjam, Janine, and both Carmen's) again in Curling. They always stop at my hangar every year here in Vernon, Canada for a great visit, drinks and BBQ, so I have a personal connection with them. The best thing about being an Olympic junkie is getting to enjoy many of the lesser-known sports, both summer & winter Games. John
