Ok, now ya lost me completely. I'll stick with Tv mode...

Not exactly sure what you mean, but I assume you're saying that sometimes you use a smaller aperture to keep the shutter speed below 1000? What's the problem with too much shutter speed? Dave

One of the cooler things I've seen recently...

I've done the opposite, using Av mode for a shallower depth of field (background blur). It really didn't work. I prioritize shutter speed over depth of field. With my 18-55 lens (at 18), I can't tell the difference between f/3.5 and f/11 when looking at my pictures. I can tell the difference between 1/800th and 1/100th though, bigtime. I understand that aperture becomes much more important for manual focus, since you need a large DOF to ensure you stay in focus. But autofocus works so well, I haven't really ever wanted to be in manual focus, except maybe in really poor lighting... when I'd need a bigger aperture anyway. Dave

I think it's possible to do it by uploading a .htaccess file. Should be just a text file that says: AddType video/x-ms-wmv wmv Upload to that /2007/ directory. But if you already have one there (it might not even be visible to you), this might overwrite it. You will probably need to rename it after uploading... call it htaccess.txt then rename it to .htaccess on the server. In theory, it won't let you rename it if the file already exists. Anyone know more about adding a MIME type with htaccess? EDIT: It probably already works fine for anyone using internet explorer... which makes up about 63% of the visitors to my site. Dave

Not sure what quality loss you mean. Can you export it from movie maker as a DV-AVI? I'm sure there's no way to import a movie maker project file into premiere. Dave

Their server isn't set up correctly. Right click the link and save it. Dave

Windows coming out of airplanes?
pilotdave replied to hackish's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Stuff breaks on new aircraft. PAC750s have a bunch of issues. Those things get fixed. Losing a side window doesn't seem like a major problem. Aircraft lose emergency exit windows every once in a while... can damage stuff on the ground or other parts of the aircraft when it falls off. Not a good thing, but probably almost never a very very bad thing. Dave -
Well... the wait time might be enough to get a new jumper that otherwise would have bought brand new gear to buy a good quality used rig at a high price. Like settling for an off the shelf rig instead of a custom made rig to avoid the wait time. Probably wouldn't affect older used rigs, only really new used rigs that can compete with brand new ones... I think people are making this way too complicated. Find out what the deal is with video at DZs near you. It varies a lot from one DZ to the next. Find out how much they get paid for jumps. Figure out how many jumps you could do on a weekend. Explain what the other costs are. Write a business plan around all that. Then take the money and go have fun jumping your butt off and worry about doing that video stuff in a couple years. Dave

Anyone know why people are searching for this all of a sudden?

Ahhh... lines up perfectly. Show was 7-8pm, hits started coming around 7:40ish. That would be it. Dave -
Anyone know why people are searching for this all of a sudden?
pilotdave replied to pilotdave's topic in The Bonfire
I was going through recent referrers to skydivingmovies.com... sites where people clicked links to get to SDM.com. I noticed something strange... TONS of hits from google searches for "shannon dean base jump video" or similar searches. They are coming from all over the country. Any idea why people are searching for that all of a sudden? There were a lot of those searches right after her death, but not a whole lot since... What'd I miss? I am hoping no video got posted somewhere that shouldn't have... Dave -
I'm tired of hearing complaints about USPA

Can you point to that FAR? Dave -
Your canopy choices and downsize history
pilotdave replied to frost's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I have a really long list... PD170, AFF1 PD230, 2-~40 first canopy - PD150, ~40-150 sabre2 135, 150-1200+. And various borrowed/demo canopies along the way here and there. I'm NOT a swooper. Dave -
Article on AOL about landing wingsuits
pilotdave replied to BillyVance's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Dunno why they wrote about it, but I can tell you that skydivingmovies.com is getting inundated by visitors from searches (mostly google) for wingsuits (and wind suites). People are looking for more info. Searches for "jeb" are up mysteriously too. Attached is a graph of the number of search engine referrals to sdm from searches for "wingsuit" over time. Dave -
Does being a pilot give you any kind of edge?
pilotdave replied to A1CSpooky's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Definitely helps for canopy flight.... mainly in the big picture type stuff like planning a traffic pattern. The perspective on landing is very different because wind has so much more of an effect on a canopy than on a plane. A 15-knot headwind on landing in a plane will just lower your ground speed a little, but you'll approach at the same angle as you would in no wind. On the other hand, a canopy might be coming straight down into a 15-knot wind. But other things transfer over on landing, like looking at the far end of the runway to judge your height down low and not the near end... But when it comes to freefall, forget it. Whole different ballgame. Dave -
What if it was a parody of the USPA logo? Would that bother you? Don't forget that dropzone.com has over twice the membership of USPA. Dropzone.com is HUGE. Perfect target for parody. And this is a parody of just the logo, not the site in any way. Not making fun of the site or the logo, just tweaking it a little into a pretty funny joke. But $35 is still out of my price range. Those things could be screen printed for under $10 each (including the cost of the shirt) if they were bought in bulk. Could even sell them at zazzle.com for less than $35, and they do all the work selling em. Real nice quality... Dave
-
It's a stock photo... that's why it gets used over and over. Anybody can buy it for advertising. He probably does get paid every time it gets used. Dave
-
There's a good one in this video: http://www.skydivingmovies.com/ver2/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=3096 Canopy on fire filmed by a guy cutting away from spinning linetwists. Don't see that every day. Dave
-
So here's a question. Could somebody else modify the dropzone.com logo the same way (but from scratch) and sell those shirts for less? Could he sue??
-
I'd be flattered. Although that logo did take some time... see how the M in movies underlines the rest of it? Yeah, that was kinda tricky...
-
I get pissed every time I hear about a company suing over stuff like this. Sure, if someone opened Dropzone.net (it's for sale!) and used such a similar logo that a visitor might think that the sites are associated, that would be a problem. But making a perfectly funny joke out of a logo, legal or not, should be encouraged because it's funny! I like those shirts. Dave

Here's a direct quote from a DZ's website (doesn't matter which DZ... nowhere i've ever been, it was just the 3rd DZ i checked): "SAFETY XXXXX is a United States Parachute Association (USPA) Group Member Parachute Center. This means that only properly rated instructors, approved methods of training, and modern, square parachutes will be used." Using group membership as if it proves something over a non-GM DZ. Seal of approval. Dave
-
I bet not even 4 dropzones will drop their group membership. The DZs like group membership. They pay for the right to post that USPA seal of approval on their websites. The decision to keep or drop the GM program is up to USPA members, not dropzones. Unfortunately, that means it will never happen. Dave
