What is THIS plane... let me try

Tupolev Tu-4 AWACS. Dave -
I'm not sure of the answer, but either way you can just reach up and hit the shutter with your hand before you climb out. I THINK the tongue switch will wake it up (I've never had my XTi not respond to the tongue switch and I'm pretty sure I've waited long enough for it to shut down), but I still tend to snap a picture every once in a while to keep the camera on when I turned mine on too early. What kind of closing pin did it have? Straight pin is no good for a throwout and a curved pin is no good for a pullout, right? Dave
-
When you convert from pullout to BOC, I asssume you have to use a different bridle/PC? Dave

Ok, I'm a little late putting the video together. Here's my view of the wingsuit jumps at the Pepperell CASA Boogie last August... http://www.skydivingmovies.com/ver2/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=6641 Nothing amazing... First jump in the video is probably my 15th wingsuit jump or so. Dave

I have my main rig with a sabre2 135 and my backup rig with a PD150. They are VERY different canopies that require really different technique to land. I barely ever jump the backup rig... Basically only for back to backs when I'm doing video for my 4-way team. Sometimes its a surprise on opening (the sabre2 always opens soft, the PD150 always opens...briskly), but other than that it hasn't been a big deal. They fly differently, but I haven't yet forgotten which one I was flying and screwed up a landing because of it. I do have to do a lot of practice flares when I jump the PD150 to get used to how it feels, but that's not really a big deal. Dave

Sounds like the best kind of audible for a beginner... one without all those distracting beeps that lead to complacency. Dave

I argued against it. We have no DZO... we're a club. Our video guys are independent contractors, not staff members. So the board decided to leave all decisions to "them" (as if we have a union of camera flyers) but require that everybody provide the same services at the same prices. The guys that were already selling prints were making a killing off of them. Made little sense to require them as part of the package (two 8.5x11 prints, btw). So the decision was up to camera flyers, not a DZO. Only reason I could figure out was that it disqualified our most active camera flyer, who was shooting film. Doesn't take a DZO to make for a fucked up dropone! Dave

Is it an audible? Dave

Well, I don't do a lot of tandem videos so I'm never running around trying to print on back to back loads or anything. But yeah, it worked about as well as could be expected. The DZ does not provide any equipment, and it was a bit of a fight even to get space to set up the printers we were required to have. A group of 4 of us ended up buying 3 printers (but one didn't work properly so we used 2). And there were 2 other printers that other people used. It's a bit of a pain, but not the end of the world. Always out of one color of ink. The guys shooting the most videos were running off to the store in the middle of the day a lot of times. There were a couple times when I was waiting forever to print only to realize the guy using the printer had forgotten to hit the print button so nothing was happening. Prints from the Rebel XTi took quite a bit longer than prints from the XT because of the larger files. It's cool to offer prints to customers.... they buy almost all of the prints that they see. But as a required service, well, it's a pain. Just one more thing to make the video guys run around like chickens with their heads cut off. For us, the expense wasn't really a big deal... we get paid well per jump (and nobody is trying to make a living off of this). Dave

We went all digital last year (2007). Only one person was using a film camera anyway. My gripe was with the requirement for on-site printing as part of the video/stills package. What a pain in the butt... Dave

You were there? Second time I missed you. And it's hard to miss anybody when we're operating from the clubhouse. Sometimes I impress myself... Dave -
If it's just out of focus, try just manually refocusing it. It can be a little hard to tell on the little screen if its in perfect focus, but you can get it focused fine that way. If it won't focus in manual focus, then there's something wrong. Dave

The Ultimate 2K Composites camera helmet!!
pilotdave replied to Bowen's topic in Photography and Video
Is that a rhetorical question? The point of a breakaway ringsight doesn't change just because there are other potential snag points. How many people have died because of ringsight snags? (I can think of two off the top of my head). How many because of snags with any other part of a camera helmet? (I don't know of any). Have you seen the stuff people were using 9 years ago? These have way fewer snag points, plus a cutaway system in case it does happen. I'm not saying that a line couldn't snag on the still camera... but its still a much cleaner setup than what a lot of people are jumping. I do wish they'd build them with a much bigger flat top though. I don't know why they put that tiny little flat spot on them when they know the only thing anybody will mount up there is a big SLR. A flush mounted quick release would be nice too... FF4 maybe? Dave -

The thumbscrew doesn't go into the hole... only the very tip, where it's chamfered, barely fits in the hole. That's all it needs though... It's got no play so it can't go anywhere. I just hope that thumbscrew stays tight and doesn't back itself off. Seems like it'll be fine... one more thing to check before exit though. Dave -

Whats the removability of the sight have to do with anything snagging? Nylon screws make it frangible... But it's also removable so you can jump without it or remove it when storing the helmet. I let someone else jump my camera helmet every once in a while... Wouldn't want that person using a ringsight though, so it's nice to be able to remove it. It attaches right back on without having to be sighted in again. Dave -

I just added the removable sight bracket to my FF2. Had the same concern about how little thread sticks through. Seems to hold fine, but it really only seems to take about a quarter turn or maybe less to loosen it. I guess I'll just have to make sure it's properly lined up and tightened all the way. Seems solid. Hopefully I'll be able to try it out in the air tomorrow. Does yours stick a bit in the locked position? Sometimes mine's really hard to pull out to rotate it out of the way. I just don't like pulling on it so hard because of the nylon screws... Dave -
Wonder why they dug that one up. That one made the rounds on RealTV years ago. Pretty sure I first saw that clip on TV at a DZ in florida about 7 years ago. Dave

I read the opposite... the bug is that it fails to disable the internal mic, which pisses off people trying to use the external mic. Dave

Check this out: someone got lanc through the A/V to work. http://www.sonyhdvinfo.com/showthread.php?p=62955 Edit: according to what I can find, it IS lanc, not another type of control, that is built into the A/V connector. An adapter might be all we need. THIS underwater housing already uses the A/V port for camera control of the CX-7. THE WORLD MAY NOT BE COMING TO AN END AFTERALL! Dave

Now that you've got the rig, demo some other canopies and see what you like. It's cheap and easy. You might just not like the spectre... some people do, some don't. It's personal preference. Dave

Have you used a camera with a dust removal feature? It works...somewhat. Not perfect, doesn't get everything. But there are times I'll look through my pics and see a dust spot on a bunch of pictures. Then it disappears in another series. That's the dust shaker at work. It doesn't shake the sensor either, it shakes a filter in front of the sensor. So the sensor is firmly mounted to the body. I switch between 2 lenses a lot now, so I end up with more dust than I used to, but when I only owned one lens, i definitely found i got less dust on my pics with the 400d than i did with the 350d.
