If the drogue is in tow, it is not in the pouch so you don't have a horseshoe. If the closing loop breaks at that point, the main will deploy. You will not end up with a drogue in tow with an open main container, which is something that can happen on other tandem systems. Dave

Any pictures of yourself while working ???
pilotdave replied to ArnoSchutte's topic in Photography and Video
I don't have any of myself "working", so here's another one of you, at the other end of a jump (last saturday)... Dave -
You can still join AOPA as a non-voting member. Only pilots/aircraft owners can be full members. But then again, you can get a pilot's license by visiting a doctor. You can get a student pilot certificate just by getting a 3rd class medical. It counts. Dave

Bought a stock rig, huh? Shoulda ordered something a little more customized. Nice rig... you'll never pick up the wrong one! Dave

My 2nd AFF jump: PLF + photos.
pilotdave replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Nice! I'm just glad someone got pictures. I was off jumping somewhere else, slacking in my weekly photo duties. Nice to see you were helped out of the tree by someone that landed on that same treeline on her category A jump. -
I agree that it comes down to personal preference and your post explains exactly why. Your personal preference is to put comfort and looks first. Those are the absolute last things on my mind when choosing a rig. We don't only choose the rig we like the best... we also choose the attributes of a rig that we find most important. As far as looks go, I can only think of 2 rigs that are uglier than a vector.... racer and mirage. Just my opionion. You either love em or hate em. Dave

I don't sign a waiver before I get in my car. If I sue someone for hitting me, the highway isn't going to go out of business. Waivers are not BS. This is a dangerous sport. If you don't accept that you could be hurt by someone else, you can't be skydiving. It's that simple. You NEED to accept it, because skydiving won't work any other way. It's just dangerous. It's dangerous because equipment can fail, planes can crash, you can make mistakes, and other people can make mistakes. And sometimes stuff just goes wrong and nobody is at fault. It's just the way it is. If you don't agree, please don't sign the waiver. Dave

So on the topic of packing PD 9-cells... Any advice on pro packing for softer openings? I have a 9-cell in my backup rig (my first canopy). It sat in a closet for about 4 years when I got a new rig, but now I'm jumping it fairly regularly for back-to-back loads when shooting 4-way video. When I bought the rig years ago, I was taught to roll the nose and pull the slider all the way out the nose instead of quartering it. I have no choice but to have packers pack it for me (since I tend to use it on back-to-back-to-back loads). What are the best tips for softer openings? The camera helmet really magnifies the openings. They aren't HARD, just really brisk. I just tell packers to roll the nose... but I've forgotten to mention it before and a non-rolled nose doesn't seem to make much difference. Dave

What he said. (Plus the 2-years in the sport in your profile). Dave -

Need to find a place with a pool for B License Training...
pilotdave replied to gonzalesna's topic in Safety and Training
An intentional water jump used to be required. Now you just need to get all geared up (in an old, non-airworthy rig) and jump in a pool. The canopy will be draped over your head, and you need to swim out. Dave -
Parachute School of Toronto, Baldwin ON -- Grand Caravan
pilotdave replied to RMURRAY's topic in Events & Places to Jump
Yeah we were limited to 17, or occasionally less on hot days after fueling or when the copilot's seat was installed for training. Can't imagine that thing with 21 on board. Our minimum was normally 14, so we didn't have much wiggle room as far as planning loads went. Dave -
Looking for a good way to keep riser covers closed.
pilotdave replied to Gary73's topic in Gear and Rigging
Pretty sure I was given a number of something like $700 to get a retrofit on a vector3... requires a whole new yoke, I believe. Never had one of my V3 tuck tab riser covers open at the wrong time as far as I know... I did have the plastic stiffeners crack on both sides though. Replaced for free by UPT under warranty when the rig was 3 years old, including replacement of at least one entire riser cover since the broken plastic had poked through. No problems with the new plastic material they switched to, except the very first jump on the new riser covers when one decided not to open. A lot of yanking on the riser got it to open, and no problems since then (2+ more years on it). Dave -
Need to find a place with a pool for B License Training...
pilotdave replied to gonzalesna's topic in Safety and Training
The requirements for water training are in the SIM. If you land in the water and have an instructor go over the required material with you and you demonstrate swimming and all that, then sure, why not? If you just land in a swoop pond, then no, that's not water training. -
How'd you build the "shelf" to widen the top mount? That's exactly what I want to do to my FF2. You didn't write a detailed instruction manual or take videos of the process by any chance, did you?

One thing to consider before you buy a quick release is how the plate fits on the camera in relation to the battery door. If the plate covers it, you'll need to unscrew the plate every time you want to charge your battery. Take some measurements and think about how it'll all fit together before you buy. Dave

Popping the brakes during deployment
pilotdave replied to ShadowCount's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
The jumper in this video steers just fine without using any of those inputs: http://www.skydivingmovies.com/ver2/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=3673 Pulling an outer A/B line does the trick nicely (for our "don't try this at home" file). -

How extreme a skydiver are you
pilotdave replied to crashtested's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Umm, maybe because you claim to be "extreme" and surprise people with your behavior... and you created a poll that links being extreme with pulling low. Maybe? Dave -

If he was REALLY extreme, he'd lose the e at the front. All caps works better too. Or if you're really extreme, you go with a mix of caps and lower case. XtReMe!!!! Personally, I wish all those people would take up skateboarding or something, where injuries don't risk the sport to everyone else participating. Can't really answer the poll either... I don't think pull altitude is a very good measure of XTREMEness... till you get under 2000 with a high performance canopy. I have no problem pulling under 2500 feet on an RW jump, but I am not XTREME to the MAX - DO THE DEW! Dave
