Don't forget that both the top and bottom skins increase by the change in area of the canopy. And the thickness changes too, so the area of the ribs changes. Not as simple as multiplying the weight of 1 square foot by the change in canopy size. You can find canopy weights at a lot of the manufacturer websites. Better yet, just put different rigs on at the DZ and weigh yourself. Dave

Something you never want to here at takeoff!

What piece was it?? Dave -
well...imagine the wind is 5 knots then suddenly a 16 knot gust hits. That's a change of 11 knots. That's a huge gust that could really wreak havoc on canopies. Nobody should be jumping with an 11 knot gust factor. That could bring your canopy from 20 knots to 9 knots in a heartbeat.... it won't like that. While you couldn't jump anyway, if the winds were 14 gusting to 17 you'd probably be safer. Dave

I still think they're all faked. I've seen websites with tips on digitally "ricing" cars, and these show all the usual techniques... lowering, different wheels, tinted windows, graphics applied, bumpers from other cars, etc. It's funner to go the other way though. Take one of those cars and make it look normal in photoshop. Much harder to do. These look pretty convincing but there's something just not quite natural about them. Lots of signs of photoshop. Dave

What if it's tacked down? Do you think slinks should be, or it doesn't matter? Mine have taken a pretty good set and don't rotate very often anymore, but some people still recommend tacking them in place. Adds to the installation time too, if you think it's necessary... Dave

Troll: 1 weegegirl: 0 Why do people get so worked up over stupid things people say, ESPECIALLY if you think the person just said it to start shit? Dave

Damages slider grommets better! Dave

I'm just curious... is that a proven fact? I personally use slinks on my main and reserve, but I'm just not 100% convinced a slink could never fail after opening. It's the lack of hardness in a slink compared to a rapide link that I wonder about. Less cut resistance. Couldn't one of those damaged slider grommets slowly cut through it during a canopy ride? Or some failure mode I can't even imagine... Dave

Those look very photoshopped to me. Anyone know for sure? Dave

This is only my non-expert opinion. Don't worry about the number of cells. Choose a canopy that has appropriate flight characteristics for you. I definitely believe in waiting a bit longer till you buy anything anyway, but read up on different canopies here and in the gear section. I think you'll find a bigger difference from model to model than from generally 7 cells to 9 cells. I mean, I know people that LOVE spectres and HATE triathlons, which are both 7 cells. When I was buying a new canopy, I narrowed my choice down to a spectre and sabre2, a 7 cell and a 9 cell. I picked the one I liked more after demoing both. I didn't decide based on number of cells. On the other hand, I was able to pack the 7 cell SLIGHTLY faster. Dave

I have nothing against metal links, but you keep failing to respond to any argument as to why soft links ARE better. You say they aren't, others give reasons why they are. Belly reserves didn't become more dangerous when better gear was developed. Rounds didn't become more dangerous when squares came about. But that doesn't mean newer containers and newer mains are not better than old ones. Slinks don't make metal links dangerous. But that doesn't mean slinks aren't better. Make ANY argument as to why they are equal. Dave

Me too. I had been just folding the excess over and stuffing it down the loops on the back of the riser. After having a brake fire and then the brake line somehow get stuck in the full flight position (it became freed after landing on rear risers so no clue what happened), I reread the manual and realized I was doing it wrong. Previously I had the excess come out and hook around my gloved thumb once when unstowing the brakes... no big deal, slipped right off, but it coulda been a bigger annoyance. Absolutely no issues at all since I started doing it right. Dave

What kind of canopy pilot are you?
pilotdave replied to funks's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I agree with the rest but I did my first jump (AFF1) with a 170. Course I didn't load it QUITE that much... Dave -

Problem is different people have different ideas of what is stupid. No offense but "i'll be moving on to 180s soon" better be a joke. It made me laugh anyway. There's nothing conservative about anything you just said. I think I'm pretty conservative. I don't swoop, don't touch my front risers below 500 feet, and never had a desire to. I probably will swoop some day, but I don't see the point right now. Dave -
But I'm not listed in any phone book. I'm pretty amazed... they have me in there 4 times...all same address (my parents house) at both of their phone numbers twice. One of those numbers is unlisted. Can't figure out how they could have connected me to that address and phone number... never paid bills there or anything like that. Dave

Looks like the database server crashed...althought it was doing something else weird earlier. Matt'll get it back up soon I'm sure. Dave

I don't know what you're talking about. It's always said Red Bull. Yeah... that's my story and I'm sticking with it. Your reply subject lines are just a conspiracy against me! That's what I get for posting in a hurry as soon as I saw it was on. BTW, is my site working for anyone at the moment? Dave

It's on an HD channel called INHD. No idea what area it covers. I don't have a vcr connected or a tivo or anything. It's blade running (swooping down a ski slope). Anyone get the channel?? Dave

You do php right? Make your own. Don't need log files or anything. You could have an include on every page that just writes the users ip address to a database (or even a text file if you really wanted to) and do all the calculations/stats you need. Dave
-
Is that still true if you plan on loading it much higher than the TSO standards? Dave

Been using http://extremetracking.com/ for over 3 years now to track skydivingmovies.com. Can't comment on accuracy... impossible to know without comparing the stats to log files. And if I always had access to log files, I wouldn't need a tracker. My stats are at http://extremetracking.com/open;sum?login=skyftp if you want a sample. Dave

FAA as in Finland Aviation Administration? Clouds are clouds in some countries. And jumping through industrial haze is just as illegal in the US.

AAD's & Personal Acceptable Risk Thresholds
pilotdave replied to Hooknswoop's topic in Safety and Training
You said you won't pull as low now that you have an AAD. What emergency procedure did you change? If you have a malfunction, what would you do differently? Dave -

So they weren't AAD dependent. What's your point?
