I'm actually surprised nobody's commented on As if it was inevitable. As if "hooking it in" after one year in the sport is long enough to say "finally." I'd expect that sort of comment from someone with thousands of high speed landings who finally misjudged one by a few feet. Or maybe an AFF student that "finally" stood up a landing. It's all relative... but breaking your back after ANY amount of jumping shouldn't be a "finally," especially after just a year or less. If I ever twist an ankle on landing, I'll say "it finally happend." I'd think a little differently about a broken back though. Maybe "holy fuck it happened and I'm lucky my dumb ass is still alive and I can walk." Stupid low turns don't just happen. People read about them and think they know better, as if they are different from the last guy to fuck himself up. But apparently you were just sitting back waiting for the day to come... Dave

I suggest that they revise the ad for next month. 1. Cut away. 2. Smile. 3. Pull reserve handle anyway It's not a procedure, it's a chain of events. Not the way you'll train, but rather the way it'll realistically happen. Train to pull both handles. But in reality, you'll be pulling the second handle just for the sake of following procedures (it's good practice, so why not?). If the RSL fails, you'll skip #2 and already be heading for #3. But they've laid out the best case scenario for a skyhook cutaway vs a cutaway with no RSL. It's an ad. They're allowed. BTW, in my opinion, the less fine print the better. Dave

I see your point, but I think it's pretty obvious that they're being a little cute. Obviously everybody needs to train to pull both handles, but with a skyhook, you might just be at line stretch before you clear the cutaway cables. If not, well you'll already be pulling your reserve handle. But the reality is you'll probably be smiling under a fully inflated reserve while you uselessly pull the reserve handle as you trained.

That's why my motto is "always sacrifice safety for popularity." Ok no it's not. But I do always say "I'm not really into safety" which drives people nuts at work... in a product safety department. Weird. My dad flew in the 60s (and not since). Years ago he found his pilots license in an old wallet he hadn't used since then. It says Federal Aviation Agency on it...looks fake. Course that's what the FAA was called for a while after it switched from CAA. No record of him in the FAA database. I got my private in 1997 but I'm listed as having gotten it in 2004 because that's when I requested one of the new style licenses. It's a weird system. Dave

Did he have a recent medical? 1945 is pre-FAA... I know they haven't entered records that far back for pilots that haven't flown since that far back. Dave

Well, flare technique CAN change depending on wind, right? I mean, if a swooper starts his flare while dragging his feet doing 60 mph level to the ground on a no wind day, he can end his flare right there if he's pointed into a 60 mph wind. You won't be able to tell from watching the ground. You'll be drifting over the ground at about the same speed as the wind is blowing. And even that is hard to detect. Dave -

You'd have to get a uspa instructor to sign off each line of the A license proficiency card. Nobody has to do AFF, ya just have to demonstrate the proper skills. Dave

I know of one. My former rigger, who sold me my first rig, a catapult-equipped reflex, told me the story and even though i later found out he's a compulsive liar, I'm inclined to believe him...
