Waste? That made for awesome video. That's not a waste!

That looks like the clip from MTV's Senseless Acts of Video. The jumper is Troy Hartman. It was just a stunt for a TV show. Dave

I love the idea of designing it to be printed and posted at the DZ. I'd lose the fine print and post the valid times in larger numbers at the top (in local time). Then set it up in a way that a DZ can bookmark their winds aloft forecast so they can quickly print it each morning. I'd make knots/mph and degrees F/C an option as well... saved in the URL for example so they come up the same each time the bookmark to the forecast is loaded. (ie make it read the variables off the URL like http://www.pcprg.com/cgi-bin/windsaloft.cgi?station=BDL&ws=knots&temp=f&time=EST) Great idea! Dave

Try http://keepvid.com/ It's a flash video that will download in .flv format, so you'll either need an flv player or find a way to convert it to something else... Dave

Just got A Liscense and want my first rig...Where to start?
pilotdave replied to Freeflyusmc's topic in Gear and Rigging
Are you making 10 a day and packing for yourself? If not, start packing. It'll slow ya down and save you all kinds of money. If you are packing and can still do 10 a day, damn, I'm impressed! Anyway, talk to your instructors about canopy types and sizes... nobody here can really tell you whats best for you, at least not as far as size goes. Containers are all pretty good, as long as they're fairly new (less than 10 years old). Just gotta find one that fits the canopies you want and has a harness that fits you. That's the hard part, so a lot of people buy new containers and used canopies. Dave -
I think his point was that airspeed on jumprun isn't constant for a given aircraft. There may be a nearly fixed minimum jump run airspeed, but pilots won't always fly at that minimum. And of course that minimum includes some margin... the pilot doesn't fly jumprun at the minimum controllable airspeed (the airspeed needed to "stay in the air"). Dave

Things seem to be a little different in the northeast. DZs all kinda sorta get along. Some people stick with one DZ, others move around between them. We even make some attempt to compare schedules early in the season to try to avoid conflicts, though we don't go out of our way to do that... only for major events. Heck, my DZ's jumpers just raised a bunch of money to pay for improvements at a competing (and bigger) DZ. I thought that was a little strange (I donated anyway), but it's really cool to see jumpers acting like a big community instead of a bunch of little independent competing businesses. Dave

Is this a good camera/rig for a beginner?? :-P

I'm pretty sure that's the prototype Vector 4. Skyhook and collins lanyard equipped. Nothing to worry about. Dave -

I'll see if I can convert it to something else tonight unless someone else does it before me. Dave

Might try contacting Atair Aerospace, which is located in brooklyn. Dunno if anyone there does reserve repacks, but they've got some very experienced riggers that work there and probably live in the area. http://www.atairaerospace.com/contact/ Dave

Yeah, been getting lots of complaints about this one not playing. Not sure why... I ran into the same problem on my laptop yesterday. Upgrading to the latest quicktime player is all it took to fix it. Dave

The HC3 comes out this month, doesn't it? Might wanna hold off... Dave

I wore weights for AFF, starting with my first release dive. Weights don't help ya arch, but they do help fallrate. I started with 2 pretty big instructors who struggled (but stayed with me) and eventually only jumped with 2 smaller ones for the rest of my AFF jumps. Wore weights for almost all of my first 200 jumps, then suddenly started falling faster (without gaining weight) and haven't needed them since. But if ya need em, ya need em. But for a student, it's the instructor's call. Best call for him MIGHT be to pass the student on to someone else, but it might also be to have the student add weights. I needed both. Dave

Weather's looking good (I KNOW it's time to move somewhere warm when highs under 40 sound good)... I'll be there. Hopefully less filmy, more jumpy this time.

Gee I never thought of that. I guess you're right. It's obviously not worth trying, so I'll sit back and watch if anyone else wants to take a shot. Dave

Tandems are a very sensitive subject. They're where a HUGE amount of the liability in the sport lies, and they're where regulations and restrictions are most likely to come from. Tandem fatalities are MUCH worse for everyone in the sport than pretty much any other type of fatality. A hybrid with a tandem might only be a little more dangerous than a regular hybrid (not that I'd agree with that assessment), but the consequences of an accident are far worse. Theres just no reason to do things like that. Dave

Here in CT, that's state law. We need to fill out incident reports for every off landing too. They go to the state DOT. No clue what happens to them from there. Dave

chinooks can land in water, can't they? I don't think so...I've flown in a couple but we weren't near water... They can, but I think they only do it for the special forces.... an inflatable boat can drive right onto the ramp. But after the mission, they have to do a lot of maintenance and repack the brakes. They train for it in simulators though. I just happen to sit next to a chinook pilot at work... after hearing so much about them from him, I wouldn't get in one without a rig on! Dave

Cessna 182 vs. Pilatus Porter
pilotdave replied to Eagleeye's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Right, but where are ya gonna find 87 octane to put in your 182? Is it still made? I could be wrong, but I thought 100LL replaced all those lower grades of avgas because it was compatible with the older engines, unlike the green (high lead) 100 octane. I'm all for skydivers learning what looks right and what doesn't look right, but is this something to even bother learning about? Dave -
Cessna 182 vs. Pilatus Porter
pilotdave replied to Eagleeye's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I really don't think this is really an issue anymore. I think 100LL can be burned in pretty much anything, and how often do you see any other type available? I think green 100 octane might be available some places, which can't be used in engines rated for lower octanes, but I doubt any of them are used for skydiving. I've heard of avgas trucks being converted to Jet-A trucks, and dying the jet fuel blue, confusing fuelers. But is using the wrong fuel on purpose or by mistake really much of an issue anymore? Are there really operators out there putting something other than Jet fuel in their turbines? Dave
