Stupid question about Alti's in aircraft holds
pilotdave replied to RandomLemming's topic in Gear and Rigging
From the altimaster FAQ: Dave -
Dude you cant list your entire database as your favs Well I never made a way to share favorites lists, so I just linked to everybody's favorites. Maybe that's a new feature that we need... Dave

A few from my Favorites list... Mike's favorite tandem student TP Freefly Schurken This ain't your grandma's Hawaii Mountain Swooping trailer BTW, everyone should enter your dz.com username in your user info... I'm using our dz.com profiles in the comments system now (instead of bothering with a separate profile). Dave

Perris DC-9 in 4 different paint jobs: http://www.airliners.net/search/photo.search?&cnsearch=47361%2F488&nr_of_rows=19&first_this_page=0&page_limit=15&sort_order=photo_id+DESC&nr_pages=2. A 5th paint job: http://www.planeboys.de/txl/Airlines/Airlines%20N/nordic%20east%20airways/se-dbo_dc-9-20.htm Here's a 6th paint job when one side was painted for a movie: http://www1.airpics.com/showimg.php?imgid=13398. Also owned by value jet at one point, where "ValuJet failed to comply with AD-95-12-25, which requires an inspection to prevent chafing of a hole in the FIREX supply pipe of the number one engine. ValuJet operated aircraft N127NK on 24 flights between May 22 and June 1, 1996, when it was out of compliance with the AD." It's a 1969 model originally delivered to SAS. Its name was "Siger Viking." Gotta love google. Dave

Until I got a wide screen TV, I hated wide screen DVDs. Still annoying because wide screen DVDs have a higher aspect ratio than the TV, so you still end up with black bars. I'd like 16:9 DVDs, but that still sort of defeats the purpose of the widescreen dvd in the first place - to not cut off the edges. Dave

I'm pretty sure all sony minidv cameras use firewire. Dave

According to snopes, it's a buncha BS. And snopes is on the interweb so it must be true. http://www.snopes.com/medical/myths/8glasses.asp "If you feel thirsty, drink; if you don't feel thirsty, don't drink unless you want to." As I've heard one doctor put it, drinking lots of water just makes you have to pee more. Dave

Thought about that... they don't quite touch but it's probably close enough. But that won't work after I add my brand spanking new still camera. Guess I could put some velcro on it too... Any other ideas? Dave

Comparison... concorde does ~1400 mph. That pointy nose reaches about ~260 degrees F. I think you'd be toast (well done toast at that) by the time you slowed to 1400 mph. Dave

Ok, some quick, dumb calculations... The space station is about 400 km above the surface of earth. 400,000 meters or ~1.3 million feet. So lets say you have basically no drag from exit to about 300,000 feet. That's a million feet of freefall accelerating at ~32 ft/s^2. Probably a little less acceleration because there's less gravity at a million feet than on the surface, but not THAT much less. Long story short... you're doing 5400 (edit) mph when you reach 300,000 feet, and you're still accelerating. Course I probably left something off the calculation (again)... Dave

The top 10 are the exception. They didn't get to be in the top 10 by using removable sliders. I can understand it for them... but I can't understand why just about anyone else would want one. I've never seen one up close... don't know anything about them. But if removable sliders become popular for weekend jumpers to add a foot to their swoops, I think it'd just be a matter of time before someone gets killed by forgetting to put the slider back on and taking it to terminal. I've heard of jumpers forgetting to uncollapse a slider and that's right in front of their face. Out of sight, out of mind. Would a swoop competition be any less exciting if everyone had fat lines, sliders, and pilot chutes trailing behind? Might not set any world records, but would it change the results? (Not suggesting we should try to turn back the clock on technology. Just saying this stuff might not be the best idea for MOST swoopers.) Dave

Anyone modified their FF2 to make the dbox keep from slamming down when it's open? The door is pretty heavy compared to some other dboxes and has very little friction in the hinge, so when I'm holding the helmet and either filming with the camera's screen extended or playing back a video, I have to be really careful to hold the door open. I've had it slam down onto the LCD screen a few times and want to avoid that. I was thinking that either some kind of spring that holds it open or just adding friction to the hinge so it stays put would do the trick. Any ideas? Dave

Why? If you don't want to sign the waiver, you just don't jump (or learn to pack yourself and accept your own liability). Skydiving is risky even when everyone does everything right. It can be very hard to prove that someone like a packer made a mistake in a lot of cases, but a jury may have no problem making that totally uninformed decision. It's easier to just inform anyone that wants to jump that they're taking their own risk. Skydiving wouldnt last long otherwise, at least not in the US... Dave

Saving my First Jump DVD - HELP!!!
pilotdave replied to irishflygirl's topic in Photography and Video
Step 2 after getting it backed up on DVD is uploading it to SkydivingMovies.com. Then you can share it with your friends too. And if the site ever goes down, it'll be backed up on plenty of peoples hard drives. Dave -
Why does every myspace page have to look like every web page did 10 years ago? Dave

I did the opposite. I never used to watch my canopy on opening. After getting the camera, I wanted to get a good video of one of my standard off-heading openings to see if I could tell what was happening. My camera is aimed a little low, so I need to look WAY up to catch the opening, and even then I usually don't see the whole canopy. But I've also got around 550 jumps on it and no hard openings, and I have a pretty light camera, so I don't worry too much about my neck position (though I'm aware it could happen any time). Dave
