  1. I think I'm going to try Spysweeper when I get home tonight. I've got Norton and Skybot, both tell me there's no immediate threat, but my computer is still running like crap and I'm getting popups. (I know I'm a little low on memory too, but I think I need to try and clean the computer one more time before I attempt to add memory!) At least the porn is finally gone- that's what prompted me to download skybot and buy and install Norton! I know some of the "geeks" are sick of these threads, but its really helped me! maura
  2. Wow, one of my kitties is getting that same present this year! But we're not waiting until Christmas! He'll be 6 months old on Friday, so I think those nuts are going sometime next week! (Before he starts humping stuff and spraying!)
  3. I take pretty good care of my babies year round so they usually give ME a nice Christmas and birthday present. Sometimes they even remember Mother's day!
  4. I've used Pimsleur tapes which are pretty good, however unless you can get your hands on a used set, for what they cost new, you might as well take a class.
  5. I studied French and Spanish in high school and was pretty good with both languages, but if you don't use it, you lose it! The past few years, I've been going to Mexico about once a year, and I've been trying to remember/ improve my Spanish. I've used tapes and 2 different computer programs, with varying degrees of success. If you're diligent, you can learn a lot this way, but you won't have the feedback of a teacher or the conversation practice. (I used to play the tapes in the car when I was driving to and from work or the dz.) I can travel in Mexico and get by, communicate with taxi drivers and sales people, order meals, no problem! But for me, that wasn't enough anymore so I finally broke down and enrolled in some classes. The classes I am taking are small (5 students in my class), designed for adults and are conversational while focusing on grammar and vocabulary. It really forces me to think and listen for 3 hours a week, anyway, which is better than just repeating after a tape! My suggestion is you look around and try to find something like that in your area, then go check the place out, maybe sit in on a class. If all else fails, there's always Berlitz, but they're kind of pricey and I've heard mixed reviews about them. Good luck! maura

    Running music

Right now my favorite CD to work out with is a live Violent Femmes disc. Its really long (an hour or more) and the songs just get me moving!
  7. Not on any beach in Mexico I've been to, with the exception of Zipolite! Still think its going to be a great boogie, but why not show a picture of the beautiful coastline instead of something people most likely will NOT see! FYI, if you want to see the Oaxacan coastline you'll be flying your canopy over, rent the movie Y Tu Mama Tambien!
  8. Actually, nude sunbathing is frowned upon in most parts of Mexico and Puerto Escondido is no exception. A little further down the coast in Zipolite is a different story!
  9. My guess is they tend to become bigots as well, then raise more bigots! But I guess bigotry is socially acceptabe behavior whereas homosexuality is not.
  10. All kids need to learn to deal with school yard bullies. It helps us later in life when we're dealing with workplace bullies and bigots. In actual fact, the bullies fuck with whoever they perceive as the weakest, not the most different! Its all about who they can intimidate and what they can get away with!
  11. Kids can be cruel in general! And most kids are "different" in one way or another! I'll bet if you did a poll here, most would admit to having been teased in school for one of the following reasons (or any number of different reasons) being too fat, too thin, too smart, too dumb, wearing glasses, having pimples, dressing funny, being poor, being rich, bringing our own lunch every day, buying lunch in the cafeteria everyday, farting in class, puking on the teachers desk, getting rides to school with our mom's, having to ride the bus to school everyday, and I know I left stuff out! Even the "popular" kids had their bad days! Arguing that gay people shouldn't raise kids because they'll be teased by other kids is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard! Sorry!
  12. With one exception, the people I've known who have converted were not religious in their former religions, nor are they in their new ones. (One who converted to Judaism still insists on a Christmas tree, and they attend Christmas celebrations with her family!) They converted only for their "significant other", or more importantly, for the family of their "significant other"! And it does seem pretty hypocritical to me!
  13. I've actually thought about this because I was once in a serious relationship with someone who was of a different religion. It wasn't important to HIM if I converted and most of his family was OK with me also, but his brother (a rabbi) HATED the fact that I was Catholic and probably wouldn't have had anything to do with us if we got married. (No great loss IMO! But it does suck being a position to come between the guy you love and his family!) I would not have converted because I feel pretty strongly that embracing a new religion is a very big deal, and it shouldn't be done just "for a guy"!
  14. You know what? I had 2 glasses of wine last night and I feel hungover! This sucks! There is nothing worse than being hungover when you didn't even get drunk the night before!
  15. You know, when I was moving I gave out my cell number as a contact number to a couple of the utility companies and my new insurance company. Seemed like the easist thing to do since I wasn't sure when new service would be set up or the old service discontinued, and if I was going back and forth between the old and new place, my cell phone was the bast way to reach me anyway. However, since I gave that number out to businesses, now I do get some telemarketing calls to my cell phone. I actually still get some on my home phone even though that number is listed with the Do Not Call registry- could be an entry form someone in the house filled out or whatever. The Do Not Call registry is great, but doesn't eliminate 100% of the unwanted calls. That's why I love caller ID! If I don't recognize the number or if it doesn't give me a number, chances are I'm not answering the call! The caller has the option of leaving me a message, something telemarketers rarely do!
  16. Supposedly they know which fan threw the drink at him and they're considering criminal charges. Regardless, what he (Artest) did was unacceptable, and the punishment is fair, if only to set an example to the rest of the league. (They might file criminal charges against him and some of the other players involved as well.) As much money as it costs to go to any professional sporting events these days, you'd think the "low lifes" would be in some bar drinking beer instead. Its a pathetic situation no matter how you look at it!
  17. My guess is he meant FIBULA since it isn't a major weight bearing bone, so he'd probably be able to walk on it a little quicker if that's all he broke, assuming there was no soft tissue damage. But, good question..........
  18. We have a lot of weights available, but if you want to use a packing mat, your bring your own. We DO have indoor packing on padded wrestling type mats, though, so its not like you are packing on grass or a dirty tarp! If I'm packing for myself I use both. Pretty much all the cash packers use weights, some even use carpet remnants to get that last bit of air out of the canopy.
  19. QuoteFortunately I beleive W has a far higher moral standard. I almost spit on my monitor at that one! Thanks for the laugh!
  20. Well, like my good friends told me last November when I broke my ankle, at least its the "off season", right? Heal fast!
  21. Aw, Sunny, you can't please everyone! (If you tried, I guess that would be a part of the story, huh?) I guess some people don't feel "popular" if they aren't included! And others are probably relieved!
  22. The decision about whether or not to baptise your baby rests solely between you and your wife. How to break the news to her grandmother (if its something she's not going to want to hear) is up to your wife, and she really needs to be firm and fair about it, making it clear that whatever decision is made was made by BOTH of you together. I also assume since you are neither for nor against it, if your wife felt strongly one way or the other, you'd go along? Good luck!
  23. Well, I guess my point (one of them) is its generally the WOMAN who is expected to go through all these changes, and I do feel its a very dated tradition. These days, men don't exclusively "take care of the woman". Both the man and woman typically work and have careers outside the home, often its the woman who is the main "bread winner" of the household. Why is it that a woman is expected to change her identity when she gets married but her husband is not? Sorry, I don't get it. In any case, its highly doubtful I'll be changing my name when I get married, not just because of what I've said here, my general objection to the concept, or the inconvenience of it all, but for some very practical reasons of my own. Someone who loves me enough to want to spend the rest of his life with me should also respect me enough to accept my decision on the subject.
