Call me cynical, but there is much to gain through our contributions to foreign countries. It buys us certain economic and commercial footholds, military bases, first bid at major projects, etc... To the average joe, there's little benefits, other than on the humanitarian level. But at the multinational companies level, there are huge benefits to be had. I'm thinking of buying a cool gadget I saw in the Paragear catalog. It's a reserve handle/cable that, once exposed to fire, stiffens and can be used as a cattle prod. The cool thing is that it's built so that you can actually pull the handle without the reserve deploying, which obviously saves on a repack. And nowadays, it is hard to find a cattle prod when you need one. Good investment if you ask me. Maybe to some people. But I would say the majority of people do get married thinking it will last forever. It does't always happen that way. Much like one exits an airplane thinking he/she will land safely. IMO, the more marriage is put on a pedestal at the society level, the more you are going to see failed marriages. Peer-pressure is not a very good recipe for pretty much any action. Benefits: fiscal/insurance/discounted Red Carpet card for the spouse. The rest is personal. I'll write a book when I get to #4. I'm halfway there, so be patient, and check back with me in a couple of years. Actually, it may be what works best for Iraq. Thinking that we could expect a Western Styled regime in Iraq was, IMO, living in denial. Best case scenario, for us that is, would be, as GM stated, a democratic theocracy. Worst case scenario, an unfriendly regime. But then again, it should be about the Iraqis, not what's best for us. Much faster reaction to toggles/risers input (which means, among other things, faster loss of altitude). Which is fine when having the situation under control, but: a/ look at the incident thread (as I am sure you already have many times). b/ in my extremely limited experience, one aspect of landing that is overly overlooked when people do downsize is the "oh! fuck me!" landing. Downwind in someone's backyard, crosswind in a vineyard, etc... Standing up 100 landings in a row does not mean one have full control of a canopy. I realize that pretty much every time I jump. In any case, BillVon's list is a good indicator of what one should be able to do before downsizing. Once again, from an extremely limited experience. Be safe.
