Hi cobaltdan The increased nose drag is not a result of the x brace design, but rather the panels of fabric being sewn down the nose openings. If you study pictures of any canopy that has this design feature, you will notice that in all cases the nose is being pushed back. It is obvious, that the nose drag will increase, since the projected area is increased, since the nose part becomes flat and fat. ( What has a higher drag coefficient > a board that it held with it's full width into the air, or one that is held with it's profile into the air ? ) Gardner : She looks fast ! Hi Jay If you take a close look at x brace designs, you'll see that the nose distortion is much more than that on the RAGE, since the cell openings are covered by panels of fabric which resemble restistance to the air hitting the nose as the canopy is in flight. The x brace designs have one advantage though. The shape of the wing is kept much better, so you have a potentially larger projeceted surface area. But nevertheless, in all cases it needs a sound aerodynamic design to start with, regardless how you intend to improve overall flight performances. Gardner : She looks fast ! Hi all, The RAGE is probably the fastest canopy out there at this moment. Due to the nose design they could realize a very thin airfoil, which has a signficantly lower nose drag than what you are jumping right now. Logically it therefore will dive longer. But this does not mean automatically that you have to turn that high. The guy at Renaca just likes it that high, since it gives him the best results. What a canopy can do max is not necessarily what one is forced to do. And, again, it is not a xbraced design. Check out the attatched illustration. BTW : Freefly68. Hi ChilianXaos, Have you been to the Vina del Mar Boogie this Jan. ? One guy was jumping a R.A.G.E. 86 there. Did some amazing swoops at Renaca beach. His wingload was around 2 to 2.1. He turned at around 1100 ft for a 360. I spoke with him and he told me that he matches his turn altitude with the degrees of his turn. Meaning for a 360 he starts his turn in 360 m above the ground. This comes to about the same altitude in feet as what freefly69 posted. In one of the posts, there is a video of one of the swoops. If I remember correctly, it was posted by freefly69. Hi Hans Christian The R.A.G.E.( Ram Air Guiding Engine ) is no Airlock System, even though it might look like it at first glance. If you look at Martin's 86 next time, you'll notice, that the top skins continue from the top leading edge inside each half cell and form a air intake like you know from jet air crafts. What it does is that it keeps the overspilling air from flowing over the top, disturbing the laminar flow. This effect can be noticed especially at low speeds, where the R.A.G.E. system still produces sufficient lift to keep you flying. In aircraft terms we would speak of a low stall speed.( Pilatus Porter like ) The other advantage is, that the nose is not distorted, giving the RAGE a very low nose drag coefficient. It is actually a active air control ( guiding ) system instead of a locking system. Gardner : She looks fast ! Truman Sparks : Yeah, it's the stripes.

Since there were lots of comments about this video, I guess it is time to clarify a few things : The guy went through the course on his previous jump, but ended up very close to the barrier and therefore close to the crowd. ( big surprise for him to begin with ) Logically, on the next swoop, which is on the video, he went diagonal to gain more room. If you watch the video closely, you'll also notice that he started all the way back, even behind the far corner of this rectangle. And, ref. the people who apparently are being endangered were his 2 buddies, who just landed before him to video his swoop from the ground. The guy in De Land jumping the Rage 86 was Martin Kristensen of Funk Flyz, the Danish Freestyle Team. He had just received the canopy and put his first jumps on it. That's why his landings probably looked a bit on the safe side with no downwinders. Gardner : She looks fast ! Truman Sparks : Yeah, it's the stripes.
