  1. I'm moving to NZ in February! For at least five years, possibly for good. I can't wait! "Perhaps she saw before her a lifetime of walking on the ruined earth and chose instead a single moment in the air." -Carolyn Parkhurst
  2. Yeah, I hear Palmerston North is pretty boring, but that's where the vet school is and therefore where I'd get to spend the next 4 1/2 years. Thanks for the info, I really hope I'll get a chance to jump while I'm there. 3. All you Kiwis out there, I need your help! I'm going to be in New Zealand for about ten days a couple weeks from now, and I'd love some travel advice. My only fixed itinerary is to start in Auckland, stop in Palmerston North (for business) about halfway through, and finish in Wellington. I can't go to the South Island at all, much to my regret, but if all goes according to plan I'll be moving to NZ next spring, so I can check it out at leisure then. Anyway, I'd love some suggestions for places to go, activities to try, really good hostels to stay in, etc etc. Thanks in advance! I've wanted to move to New Zealand since I was 12 (I'm 22 now) and I can't believe it might finally happen! 4. "G.O.L.F. (for golf). The fake etymology for the word was that it was an acronym for "Gentlemen Only; Ladies Forbidden". However, the word golf is over 500 years old. In the oldest Scottish writings, the word was spelled gouff, goiff, goffe, goff, gowff, and golph." From Wikipedia.com entry for "fake etymology" :-) "Perhaps she saw before her a lifetime of walking on the ruined earth and chose instead a single moment in the air." -Carolyn Parkhurst
  5. Look how cute my two babies are together. Sometimes the dog will flop down right on top of the cat, and she doesn't seem to mind. "Perhaps she saw before her a lifetime of walking on the ruined earth and chose instead a single moment in the air." -Carolyn Parkhurst
  6. I only spent a long weekend in Norway, but the hostel I stayed at (in downtown Oslo) was pretty nice and cost $25 per night. Food struck me as very expensive, I mostly ate convenience store hotdogs which cost about $7 with a drink, and that was the cheapest thing I could find. Don't know anything about the other countries, but I hope this helps. Norway was awesome by the way, wish I could live there and do BASE off the fjords. 7. Sweet, I should be able to come to the next one, and it's just two days after my birthday! Maybe I'll actually drink this time. It was wonderful to meet you all, glad I'll get the opportunity again before I leave. 8. Do you Brits mind if I join you? I'm from North Carolina but studying in London at the moment; I haven't been jumping because of money and I'm definitely in skydiving withdrawal! Can't wait to hang out with some fellow jumpers. "Perhaps she saw before her a lifetime of walking on the ruined earth and chose instead a single moment in the air." -Carolyn Parkhurst
  9. Thanks man! I just emailed Lapalisse to book a spot in the bunkhouse Sept 6-10. Can't wait! Though the views at Gap do look amazing.. I'll just have to try to go there later on! Anyone know how late in the year they stay open? "Perhaps she saw before her a lifetime of walking on the ruined earth and chose instead a single moment in the air." -Carolyn Parkhurst
  10. Thanks! Didn't realize Lapalisse was closer. Might just go there instead. Or both! "Perhaps she saw before her a lifetime of walking on the ruined earth and chose instead a single moment in the air." -Carolyn Parkhurst
  11. Hey all, I'm trying to figure out if I can go jump at Gap for a few days in early September, but since my French is pretty rusty I can't quite get all the info I need from their website-- do they have a bunkhouse? And if so is it available all week long, and how much does it cost? Also is there a good amount of jumping going on during the week? Any other random info would be appreciated. Also advice on getting there after arriving in France (flying into St. Etienne near Lyon) would be helpful as I know nothing about French public transportation. Thanks! 12. Your poor kitty! I do hope she feels better soon. If she goes for more than a couple days without eating, you might want to try putting some baby food (chicken or turkey flavor) in a syringe and squirting it into her mouth a little bit at a time. This is the method we use at the vet's office where I work, we find it to be the best way of getting some food into them without upsetting them too much. My Siamese and I are sending her lots of vibes! "Perhaps she saw before her a lifetime of walking on the ruined earth and chose instead a single moment in the air." -Carolyn Parkhurst
  13. This ad has been the decor in my bathroom for months, and I never even noticed that he's not wearing an altimeter "Perhaps she saw before her a lifetime of walking on the ruined earth and chose instead a single moment in the air." -Carolyn Parkhurst
  14. Thanks dude! Wish I could just spend the whole time DZ-hopping.. stupid school... but I definitely want to jump somewhere in France so thanks for the suggestions! "Perhaps she saw before her a lifetime of walking on the ruined earth and chose instead a single moment in the air." -Carolyn Parkhurst
  15. Thanks so much for all the info everyone! Now I really can't wait to jump there, assuming the wind gods aren't out to get me. I'll be in Europe for about three months and I'm hoping to hit a few other DZs as well, but Empuriabrava is definitely at the top of the list! Thanks again. "Perhaps she saw before her a lifetime of walking on the ruined earth and chose instead a single moment in the air." -Carolyn Parkhurst
  16. I'm going to be in Spain in early September and was hoping to do some jumping at EmpuriaBrava. The website says they have bunkhouse accomodations for 12 euros/night; does anyone know if that would apply to a couple of non-jumping friends I might have with me, or is it for skydivers only? And should I make a reservation or anything or is there usually space in the bunkhouse? Finally, is my USPA membership and license enough to let me jump there, or will I need to purchase additional 3rd party insurance or join some other association or anything? I'd really appreciate any info you all can give me. Thanks! "Perhaps she saw before her a lifetime of walking on the ruined earth and chose instead a single moment in the air." -Carolyn Parkhurst
  17. I just did his Basic course a couple weeks ago, my last 3 jumps in fact. Unfortunately it got too windy for me to do the remaining 2 jumps, but next time I get a chance (hopefully tomorrow!) I'll be trying out the tasks I would've done on those jumps. The first jump in the course there are no tasks, it's just an evaluation of your current skills. He videos the landings, debriefs those and then lectures for 45 minutes to an hour on stuff to consider during the next jump. Jump, land, debrief videos, next lecture, until all 5 jumps are done. I would recommend taking notes during the lectures to help things stick in your mind and in case you don't get all 5 jumps in. I learned a LOT from Scott and had a lot of fun doing it. Enjoy it! 18. I took Scott Miller's canopy control course! Only got in 3 of the jumps though, then the plane's starter broke and the winds were too high by the time it was fixed. But we did do all the classroom stuff and it was awesome! I highly recommend it to jumpers of all experience levels. 19. That's nothing-- the student gear i used to jump had big ugly riser flaps that used to come open all the time in freefall and whack me on my upper arm, at one point producing the lovely picture below. The colors were much more impressive in real life. Edited to add: it was about 3 inches long. My problem with leg strap bruises is that I get them a lot but they never become visible, so I don't even have proof when I complain about them
  20. Good idea.. now if only I could pack faster than 30-40 minutes per job.
  21. Thanks everyone! You all who are coming to NC soon should have some better weather coming up. It's certainly been bad enough lately to make this llama want to spit. But I'll try not to get any bystanders. "Perhaps she saw before her a lifetime of walking on the ruined earth and chose instead a single moment in the air." -Carolyn Parkhurst
  22. Hi all, I started skydiving and lurking the forums about a year ago. Only have 59 dives so far , mainly due to lack of money. I seem to spend about as much time on DZ.com as I do at the real DZ though, so I thought I'd reveal myself. Looking forward to getting to know you folks! Big hello to anyone else who jumps at The Skydiving Place in NC! "Perhaps she saw before her a lifetime of walking on the ruined earth and chose instead a single moment in the air." -Carolyn Parkhurst
