>>Any moron that jumps from his Condo roof + direct-tv dish + small bridge + garden rock can claim BASE number these days? ~I believe that the jump should be high enough that a parachute is necessary to prevent death or serious injury. In my opinion if someone wants to earn a BASE # they should do 1 packed jump from each of the 4 objects. It seems to me that this is what qualifies you for a BASE number, as this was BASE jumping when the issuing of numbers was established. also I feel that when someone would like to attend an event like KL which has a jump number requirement that only packed jumps should be counted, as that is what will be allowed there. Other than that, have fun. keep track however you like. It's your life. ~J "One flew East, and one flew West..............one flew over the cuckoo's nest" "There's absolutely no excuse for the way I'm about to act"

Brian's family is truly an amazing group of people. You could see how much of an inspiration Brian's life had on the people who met him, and even those who hadn't. it's amazing how one person can influence so many people in such a positive way. i feel I left Pomona a better person than I arrived, and I am greatful to Brian's family and friends who not only allowed us to attend, but welcomed us with open arms, hearts, and homes. ~J "One flew East, and one flew West..............one flew over the cuckoo's nest" "There's absolutely no excuse for the way I'm about to act"

I am planning to arrive in (or near) Pomona, to pay respects to Brian Schubert, around 8pm on friday night. I was curious if anyone else might be around who wanted to grab a beer. ~Jamie "One flew East, and one flew West..............one flew over the cuckoo's nest" "There's absolutely no excuse for the way I'm about to act"

I believe this thread thoroughly explores this. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_flat;post=917427;page=1;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;mh=25; ~J "One flew East, and one flew West..............one flew over the cuckoo's nest" "There's absolutely no excuse for the way I'm about to act"

>>>We've all seen reporters misquote people. ~ Which is why we don't talk to them. 50 jumps+ talking to the media= just what needed to happen. ~J "One flew East, and one flew West..............one flew over the cuckoo's nest" "There's absolutely no excuse for the way I'm about to act"

I hope you can keep the "Died outside of the sport" section of the list. I was looking at it yesterday, and thinking that it was nice to know that someday I could be on the right half of the list next to an, "I told you so," for those who are afraid to live their dreams, and criticize mine. ~J "One flew East, and one flew West..............one flew over the cuckoo's nest" "There's absolutely no excuse for the way I'm about to act"

> Note the lengthy discussions on this topic. My points are not all mine, but I have distilled what others have written.*** ~I have read many discussions on the topic, I just felt like adding my two duckets, and the climbing article. >distilled ~I can definately denote the distinctly bitter, fatalistic taste of Fresno which has seeped into the cask of your opinion during it's aging of only 18 jumps. ~J edited to add a line...no text. "One flew East, and one flew West..............one flew over the cuckoo's nest" "There's absolutely no excuse for the way I'm about to act"

Really, it's all there is to it. *** Bullshit. We just haven't found the right device yet. Since you've already given up, please refrain from adding any more coments driven by your fatalistic mentatity. It disrespects people like Jan Davis, who believed differently, and those who still do; while adding nothing useful to this thread. Maybe you should post the way you protest:"by yourself in private. To each his or her own." ~J PS: I'm not picking a fight, just arguing passionately.Peace. The other alternative is to sneak out and huck yourself in private. To each his or her own. Quote I am all for quietly sneeking out and hucking, however, I would prefer that-at the very least- if I get caught, the punishment resonably suits the argued infraction of the law which I have supposedly comitted. ~J "One flew East, and one flew West..............one flew over the cuckoo's nest" "There's absolutely no excuse for the way I'm about to act"

I am writing an essay on "Civil Disobedience" ( Yosemite 1999,)and I found this article while seeking backing for my argument. I found so many of the comments made by climbers, and explanations detailing the risks of climbing similar to BASE that I had to post it. ~There has to be a way to change the law which BASE is prosecuted under in Yosemite, Mike and Brian (rip) did it in '66 legally. We should be able to in '06. RIP. Jan Davis, who died today, seven years ago, protesting the unjust law prohibiting BASE in National Parks. "If the alternative is to keep all just men in prison...the State will not hesitate which to choose." -Thoreau, Civil Disobedience http://www.yosemite.org/newsroom/clips2004/april/040804.htm ~J ~Just a side thought: The statements detailed in the law which BASE is prosecuted under, and the management policy (8.2.2.7.) which states that BASE is not an appropriate public use activity seem to make conflicting statements. If it is inappropriate use of National(OUR!) park land, then why is it allowed with a permit? Does the aerial delivery law show how BASE is inappropriate use of land? if the answer is no then why are we prosecuted under such a harsh, and unfair law? Maybe (save the flames for "the man") BASE deserves at -the very least-it's own law of which the punishment suits the "crime."Possibly a small fine. Baby steps. Maybe this has been tried, i don't know. I'm just attempting to think critically...and stir shit up! Knowledge is power. http://www.cr.nps.gov/history/online_books/recreation_use/chap3-1.htm "One flew East, and one flew West..............one flew over the cuckoo's nest" "There's absolutely no excuse for the way I'm about to act"

I like your sig line. By the way, you have no business quoting Tyler Durden, the ideas he represents in Fight Club are something you will never understand. ~J "One flew East, and one flew West..............one flew over the cuckoo's nest" "There's absolutely no excuse for the way I'm about to act" -
I'm a bit of a Darwinian, I say if they go in because they bought a rig on the internet and didn't find out how to use it properly, well...it's their own fault; however...somebody's object somewhere is going to get burned if they do. That should be reason enough to be careful who you sell BASE gear too. ~J "One flew East, and one flew West..............one flew over the cuckoo's nest" "There's absolutely no excuse for the way I'm about to act"

I made a system with a bungee cord. I made loops on the ends to grip, I've seen people loop them around the thumbs but i won't, if you hold on you just release at pull time. hold one side in one hand, loop the bungee through the loops on the back of your pants. I use the loops closest to my hips to keep the wing nice and wide. Here is a tip- it's a pain to hold on to the bungee while donning your rig so, use the loops over your thumbs to hold it in place untill you are geared up, then take them off your thumbs and hold them in your hands. ~J "One flew East, and one flew West..............one flew over the cuckoo's nest" "There's absolutely no excuse for the way I'm about to act"

>>This is not a new topic. I think "Tell me how you die, and I will tell you who you are" is complete crap. If I get any input on the matter, I will die in my sleep at 75 years of age. Will that at all define how I got there, ie: Avery was a layabout? ~ I don't think Paz meant for this to be an all inclusive, literal statement (It is also a translation from spanish). I took this quote from an essay where Paz is showing how Mexican/South American cultures differ in their relationship with death, and the way they deal with death. While North Americans will avoid talking about death as much as possible, in Mexico death is present in celebrations (day of the dead), songs, proverbs... death is mocked just as life is poked fun at. I think it is more a statement that is meant to give confidence to the decisions you make in life, and is meant to be read within the context of the entire quote. >>"He died doing what he loved" ~I agree, it sucks, however; How would you like your death to be explained to those who care about you, but can't really understand why you do what you do, in the result or your untimely demise? More honestly? ..."It seemed like a good idea at the time" ? maybe "Sure i knew I might die, but if I really thought it would happen to me I never would have gotten myself into this mess" ? "He died doing what he loved", is like... "He's in a better place now"....(6feet of dirt?) "He died for his country".... (Here's one we'll hopefully be able so say about Avery when we hear he's passed in his sleep at 75

Marty at Asylum is awesome, I would go for the Perigee. The customer service you will recive now, and in the future, will alone make all the difference. ~J "One flew East, and one flew West..............one flew over the cuckoo's nest" "There's absolutely no excuse for the way I'm about to act"
