Even a large canopy is affected by the drag of a p/c. It distorts the topskin of your canopy and is affecting the flight and landing. In turbulance or moderate winds, it affects it even more. The best way to answer your question is to spend some time watching canopies land with non-collapsing p/c's. ~"I am not afraid. I was born to do this"~

Depends on the repair. It was five months for me. What hurt the worst (at first) was throwing out my p/c. ~"I am not afraid. I was born to do this"~

Tandem Instructor Poll: (Intentional) Flips On Exit
lopullterri replied to slotperfect's topic in Instructors
I once had a TI tell me, "I do a flip and then a barrel roll. As I come face to earth on the barrel roll I pitch the drougue. It works for me so I'm going to go with it." What do you TI's think about this? I think it was a poor excuse for not learning to do a stable exit, which I don't believe I ever saw him do. Most of these were out of a C182, King Air and a Caravan. ~"I am not afraid. I was born to do this"~ -
Someone I knowhad 2 in-grown toenails and it cost just under $8000.00 for the surgery. ~"I am not afraid. I was born to do this"~

Employment Contract and Copyright ownership
lopullterri replied to jdhill's topic in Photography and Video
At the Dz (Midwest) that I worked at , the contracters agreement said nothing about rights to my photos/video, yet when I left there I was told that the owned my work, including the blowups I paid for and mounted on the wall (This was to sell stills to tandem students). They claimed that the statement was made in the waiver that EVERYBODY signs to jump there. That statement is meant for the people buying the video/stills. Needless to say it got kind of ugly, especially since the three they insisted on keeping were the ones I did on my own time, without compensation. They refused to let me have them, but did finally pay me for the charge to enlarge them. ~"I am not afraid. I was born to do this"~ -
First freefall video (vidiot)?
lopullterri replied to AggieDave's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
I believe that Lew Sanborn was the first to film another person with a motion camera. He shot the cover for Sports Illustrated magazine in March 1961, which lead to the first skydiving movie titled "A Sport Is Born". This movie received an Academy Award nomination in 1961. Lew is still jumping and is THE nicest person that I have ever met in this sport. ~"I am not afraid. I was born to do this"~ -
Have done it a couple of times on a cutaway rig. The most amazing one was a dead center line over. Then just rolled it up and cramed it in the bag with really sloppy, uneven line stows. It cleared itself on deployment, and flew fine. ~"I am not afraid. I was born to do this"~

Steve Woodford and Maria were my AFF Instructors. I have always considered myself to be very fortunate that they were at the small Cessna DZ that I began at. Great instructors and great people. ~"I am not afraid. I was born to do this"~

After several hard openings with video, I had a great Chiropractor who had me in good shape in a week. He is the one who figured out that I had carpal tunnel syndrome and a torn rotator cuff and sent me to a surgeon. After surgery I had a physical therapist that also practiced Reiki (pressure points) and he was awsome! Look around, ask questions. You may not be 100% again, but there must be someone out there that can give you some improvement. ~"I am not afraid. I was born to do this"~

[Our students deserve the safest possible flight with the lowest risks we can provide. There is never a good reason to increase risk beyond that required for a basic tandem.] *** I agree with you 100%. My husband and I discussed this issue. He has over 1400 Tandems, I have approx. 600 tandem videos. The student deserves an instructor that is devoting all of their attention to the tandem experience and a video person who is devoting all of their attention to a good and safe video. Its a bad idea for another reason. If one instructor does it, the rest of the instructors at that DZ feel compelled to do the same...even if they aren't very experienced with tandems. It could push people into doing something that they have no business doing. ~"I am not afraid. I was born to do this"~

try this one on for size...You get a $4 discount per skydive, but you are so busy doing video, selling gear, measuring people for jumpsuits or dealing with gear issues (minor maintenance), that you rarely have time to "fun jump". Then the complaint is that you don't jump enough with others and you only jump when you get paid. So...the co-owner (who has never made a single skydive) comes up with a plan. Everyone has to rotate into a organizer slot (one weekend per month). Your jumps are paid for, but you are not making any money. Now... you are supposed to go along with this and be a "team player", which works in the corporate world, where you are making a salary, but not so well in this industry, where it is imperative that you "make hay while the sun shines". Of course if you are the only one to complain (you are the only full timer), you are not a "team player". ~"I am not afraid. I was born to do this"~

I have cleaned a lot of containers and the one thing that makes me cringe, is when I see someone take a brush to their container. It grinds the dirt in and is abrasive to the fabric. Remember, the fabric is nylon. If a shop vac won't remove the dirt, you can finish up with a damp washcloth. For other stains (grass, blood, etc.) there is a certain carpet cleaner that I have used for years. Whatever you use (mild dish soap is also o.k.), rinse thoroughly. ~"I am not afraid. Alti-5 ?? anyone know anything about this
lopullterri replied to Praetorian's topic in Gear and Rigging
The working parts on the inside are not as high quality as the Alti3. They didn't have the lifetime warranty that the 3's had. I wouldn't buy it unless I had it checked by Alti. ~"I am not afraid. I was born to do this"~ -
How necessary are booties?
lopullterri replied to Nightingale's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Why jump with less tools than the experienced jumpers? Did my first 300+ jumps without them. Once I had them I asked myself "What was I thinking?" ~"I am not afraid. I was born to do this"~ -

It's like having power steering. ~"I am not afraid. I was born to do this"~ -
I prefer to say, "You need to repeat this level". Some of the best skydivers I know, had to repeat a level. Sometimes, more than one. ~"I am not afraid. I was born to do this"~

New Poster, New to the sport...
lopullterri replied to Cojimar's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I, learned through the AFF Progression. I, have a static line instructors rating. In my opinoin, expecting a first time jumper to leave an airplane ...climb out on his own...exit clean and stable, pull on time (without any gymnastics, in between), is a lot to expect. Tandem to AFF is a great progression, in my opinion. ~"I am not afraid. I was born to do this"~ -
I began doing video jumps at approx. 350 jumps...about the same time I got my new Stilletto. I was also a very current jumper. Yes the Vengeance is ground hungery, but responds very quickly to input. I have been severly cut off on landing, to the point of going into half breaks, stearing off the wind line, and finishing off the flare...if it had been on my last canopy (Stilletto), I would have pounded into the ground. It has great response on the bottom end. It is also great in turbulence. No I didn't buy it for it's on-heading openings, because there are none, but it is something I have grown used to. Oh, by the way, on jump # 13 on my new Stilletto, I had a cutaway, my only one at this point. I have had my 2 Vengeance canopies for the past 400 jumps. Here is my point. What he needs is a good video mentor (safety tips, etc) and someone who knows the canopy, to give him tips. He doesn't need everyone jumping all over him. Let him concentrate on what he is doing. -------Just my opinion. ~"I am not afraid. I was born to do this"~

One bad landing...pulling sod out of the front vents in my full face helmet. Many, many kicks to the face doing drill dives and four-way. I think mine has saved my teeth and prevented several black eyes and broken noses. ~"I am not afraid. I was born to do this"~

If his performance on landings proves he is O.K. to downsize, I don't see that as the issue. I do mostly video jumps, and think that there is more likelyhood of needing a cypres when doing video, especially when you are new at it. I also prefer to keep my slider up and out of the way and keep bumpers on so it won't come down, and possibly wrap in my camera or, and this did happen once, have the kill line wrap around my site. He sounds like he is very current, which is important. Jump numbers don't tell the whole story. There are people out there with 500 jumps, who have no business downsizing. Sometimes because they did those 500 jumps in an 8 or 10 year span.----------- Just my opinion. ~"I am not afraid. I was born to do this"~

Check out ZUTESUTE.com. I was impressed with the quality and the owner. Wait time is about the same as all the others. ~"I am not afraid. I was born to do this"~

Light winds but the direction kept changing up to 180 degrees. Coming in and just as I began to plane out , a downdraft hit the top of my canopy. I was actually picking up a little speed and my canopy was diving in front of me. Kept flying it, leaning back as hard as I could (felt like I was going to be pulled onto my face). All I could think when I saw that canopy dive in front of me was "This is going to hurt so bad!" Was able to finish off by sliding in on my knees. Whew!!! I was done with jumping in funky winds...at least for that day! ~"I am not afraid. I was born to do this"~

I , too, did not like the way the larger p/c fit in the BOC, so for over 500 jumps used a smaller, zero-p pilot chute. Had approx. 3 second hesitation on a regular basis. Not enough to bother me, since I was always opening high (tandem video). Wouldn't recommend it, though. Should probably use what the container manufacturer says to use. ~"I am not afraid.
