  1. I have jumped my pelt head in GA on multiple occasions in the summer with no issues from the heat. Mine is 5 years or so old and still looks great, my husband's is the same, so the fur does age well as far as I can tell. My vent holes are covered with the fur. Sand the helmet, use craft glue and fur of your choice, cut the fur into several pieces and glue on the helmet. If you try to use one hunk of fur, due to the curvature of the helmet, you'll just have a mess
  2. If he somehow 'snuck onto' the load with low jump numbers, you should probably call the DZ and make them aware of the jumper's name and actual experience level. It wouldn't be a bad idea to name your friend, so that if he shows up at any of the DZs that DZ.commers jump at, we can keep an eye on things or make the DZO aware of the situation so that this does not happen. Frankly, I'd be pissed if this guy took me out and you weren't proactive about preventing the situation. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  3. Mine's covered in fur. There's an entire organization of us, the Pelt Heads, that have done so. Lightly sand, some craft glue, and furry fabric of your choice... I've seen anything from actual animal pelts to dismembered stuffed animals used for this purpose. Mine is hot pink with orange highlights. The fur has been on there for about 5 years now, if not longer, and still looks good. Plus it's warmer in the winter, easier to hear my audible, and it's quieter on wind noise. 4. Ummm, just a crazy thought, but if you don't care about other peoples' opinions, why are you ranting about other peoples' opinions? Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  5. Is this camp still on? On the web site is says 'postponed'. Thanks! Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  6. I use 'em all day long, but if I am writing something that matters, I never use them. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  7. Don't use a single linking verb in the entire paper... that all by itself will make your writing more powerful. Linking verbs.... is am are was were be being been seem appear remain stay see touch feel hear, etc (those are the only ones I remember off the top of my head) I had an English teacher that would fail us if we used any of about 30 linking verbs in any paper we ever turned in to her. If you want a proof reader, I'm a very good writer when I choose to be, have won national writing contests, been published in journals, and have helped edit everything from short stories to PhD theses. 8. Just ask them You got some good responses here, the one suggestion to add would be to ask if someone could video your landing, so that you can see for yourself exactly how high/fast/completely you are flaring... you'll be surprised how different things look when you see yourself from the way they feel in the moment and you'd learn quite a bit from that. 9. Part of the other issue with adoption is that coughing up the $30,000ish that it costs to adopt a newborn, primarily in legal costs, doesn't ensure that the adoptive parent is a 'good' parent. I did adopt a teenager out of foster care, and once he's a bit better, will likely do it again. He had 15 years to get pretty screwed up. He's made a lot of progress in 2 years... which is remarkable given that he has to learn a completely different reality than what he believed in for so long. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  10. Facing it and actually seeing it are entirely different entities Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  11. As an AFF I, the only truly major thing that I saw that you did wrong was not pull. Didn't look like you had any altitude awareness either. Remember what you're supposed to do if you find yourself with no instructor in freefall? Even once the instructors re-docked, you did not look at the alti that I could see, and the instructor pulled for you. Body position can be taught, that's not a biggie, but loss of basic awareness and not pulling... that's vital. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  12. What I'm finding ironic in this thread is your constant stress on communication from your instructors, yet you adamantly refuse to communicate for yourself. Skydiving is a sport that your ego and your fears need to get put aside, and you will learn the most from the most humiliating situations. Your refusal to understand the 'why' of the situation, to open yourself up to learning from someone that you may find distasteful as a person is going to be a very huge disservice to yourself in the long run. You'll learn less. That is sad to me. This sport is full of type As that can come across as jackasses... that doesn't mean they don't have valuable information that they can share with you, and that doesn't mean that they aren't good people once you truly get to know them. 13. None. Life is too damn short to deal with more drama in it than necessary. I don't have dramatic relationships, whether they are female friends, male friends, past boyfriends, current husband... I chose my life to be a bat-shit-crazy-free zone. If you have issues with crazy chicks, might be time to re-evaluate yourself, not the people you chose to associate with. Blaming others for the choices one makes is immature and not beneficial. 14. No... this isn't entirely true. If you adopt a baby from China, for example, you may spend $40,000 in expenses. To qualify for the credit, you need to document all of your expenses... travel, legal fees, agency fees, food, etc. If you adopt a child considered 'special needs', meaning an older child (generally older than 5), a child with emotional, behavioral, or physical issues, or a sibling group, you don't need to document any expendatures at all, you just get the full tax credit. For example, our son was a total of about $3000 for legal fees, training, clearances, etc, but I got the full tax credit without having to document anything. That is the policy in order to help increase adoptions from foster care. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  15. Have you considered contacting either DeWolf or the appropriate instructor(s) with that feedback? A vast majority of the instructors welcome feedback, and would probably want to know if things that they said/did was construed in that way. None of the instructors intend to come across that way at all.... they try to keep things light because students are stressed enough as it is, so they really do try to alleviate the stress with humor. I know that Dave prides himself on having instructors that genuinely do care and want to help the students succeed. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  16. Define 'skydivers'. The tandem students killed in plane crashes? Do they count? Jump pilots? Those members of the DZ family that may have no jumps but are there each weekend as active parts of our community (ie, the guy from Eloy that did so much work at the DZ, but I believe didn't jump)? How many jumps constitutes 'skydivers'? since some are throwing a fit over my Dick Winters post. To me, Dick Winters is more of a skydiver than I am... he jumped into war, loaded with gear, getting shot at,, watching friends die while simultaneously leading others to survive. He may not have the jump numbers that many of us do, but he has done what most of us could not. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  17. If you've ever had the honor of meeting some of the Easy company guys and listen to them speak of their jumps into Normandy and Holland as though they made them yesterday, there would be no doubt in your minds that this belongs here. Dick lived very close to me, we have some mutual friends, I've met about 1/2 dozen of those he jumped with. He was very well respected and liked in this area. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

  20. Contact your Area Agency on Aging. They have resources in your community that can help with everything from the legal end of things to care facilities to Medicaid enrollment. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  21. Ideally, there should be little to no 'scar' after any refractive surgery. Some flaps are easier to see than others, but they are still there. Look into 'enhancement' LASIK. There's no re-cutting, just peeling back the flap. I've seen some really ugly flap interfaces, and some that were nearly imperceptible. What it looks like depends on the procedure, the pre-op Rx, the surgeon, and the individual. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  22. LOL!!! Your post made me laugh.... I don't do PRK, or any refractive surgery for the record. I do pre/post op work for a wide variety of refractive surgeries, including LASEK, LASIK, PRK, etc. You are completely off-base about dry eye after surgery. With LASIK, all of the corneal nerves are severed, so the patient can't feel the dryness nearly as well... had a patient today with severe dry eye post-op LASIK and had no idea because of the corneal desensitivity. With PRK, there is no flap, so less damage to those corneal nerves, so the patient actually knows when their eye is dry... this is a good thing, not a bad thing, as untreated dry eye can cause a lot of long term problems. http://www.eyemd.com/vision-pages/prk_versus_lasik.html Here's a link to a surgeon's web site too. 24. How would the doctors know that he had a 'forced hyperextension while jumping' if they were not on the skydive? Was there video of the jump? If so, can it be posted here? Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
