  1. So go to bed an hour earlier the night of the Spring change, and stop complaining . Small price to pay for 6 months of later sunsets. And those sunrises should gradually creep back to coincide with your drive to work too. Our clocks don't change until 24th/ 25th. Can't wait for those lighter evenings.
  2. I tend not to eat much during the jumping day either. It's not nerves - more that there are so many distractions, especially when I'm team training. And there is more physical activity associated with the sport than you tend to realise - lugging the gear, climbing in and out of planes, getting on and off creepers, packing, walking dives, running out landings... I think you also spend time in the tunnel, no? That's a pretty good workout! Just make sure before you order that close-fitting jumpsuit that you're not going to be putting those 10lb back on anytime soon.
  3. It's been a few years since I last had a job interview, but I've had to conduct quite a few lately. I think it's fair to say that few people look forward to them, regardless of which side of the desk they're on. I always work hard to prepare fully - not only do you owe it to interviewees, but there are legal implications of not giving people a fair hearing. Congratulations on getting the job - next time you do need to be interviewed, it might help to calm your nerves if you remember that your interviewer would probably rather be somewhere else too!
  4. Best I could muster was a small sigh. Will that do?
  5. No, and nor is is every serviceman or woman. Many of them are heroes: some of them are downright nasty pieces of work. And of course celebrity alone - or even having produced a memorable song or two - is no justification for a public outpouring of grief on someone's demise. The knee-jerk reaction of automatically revering or condemning members of certain professions baffles and depresses me.
  6. It belongs in the hands of those elected by the people to maintain and enforce it.
  7. You forgot Shrek. And Adam Ant.
  8. Feel free to jeer and throw popcorn at them for their insensitivity to your personal enjoyment of a movie experience. Does raise an interesting question about where you draw the line, though. If someone stands up in front of me at a movie, he might think he's making an important point by showing his respect. I might think he's pointlessly blocking my view of what is, after all, just a movie (or as some critics have suggested, a recruitment advertisement). But then I've never really understood why people sometimes applaud at the end of a film either. For me, both gestures are only worthwhile if the people you are honouring, or perhaps those they left behind, are there to appreciate the gesture. Edited to add: I don't mean to be dismissive about the bravery or sacrifice shown by military personnel - just questioning where and how it's appropriate to recognise it.
  9. Say what?! I think he said that if it gets too close we have to fend it off or blow it up.
  10. Think that's bad? You should try living somewhere that fuel's expensive. Like here, for instance.
  11. I too would like the like option, It would be....splendid! A "Like" option! Yes! To put an end to all those annoying "+1"s! +1 Oh shuddup, Tony.

  13. "Five long years, he wore this watch up his ass. Then when he died of dysentery, he gave me the watch. I hid this uncomfortable piece of metal up my ass for two years. Then, after seven years, I was sent home to my family. And now, little man, I give the watch to you." The last watch I bought cost £1 at Primark. It's nasty, but it tells me the time when I don't have my phone on me.
  14. I don't subscribe to Parachutist. Last thing I want is to see a bunch of Americans having more fun than me . But congtratulations, Jennifer. You deserve it!
  15. "Tell me all the swear words you know."
  16. Mitch Henessey: How did you find us? Nathan: There may be many reasons not to kill you, but among them is not that you'll be missed by NASA. I found the address in your coat. Here. Between the address of a topless bar, and the picture of what looks like a man's penis. Mitch Henessey: That's a duck, not a dick.
  17. Right on. Exactly. Oh, and these are the good old days. Just wait and see.
  18. Great! If you think showing off your new alti is fun, then just wait until you get to strut around in your own rig ;). And you'll have figured out by now that this sport is very much a 'head' game. You might be surprised how much better you perform when you have your own gear if only because it helps you feel like a 'real' skydiver. About your landings - very glad you're PLFing successfully and not hurting yourself, and of course you should continue to do that when necessary. I think the only danger is in getting the idea that you can't stand up. For example I've seen low-timers who habitually do sit-down landings from a perfectly timed flare, just because they've got used to them and convinced themselves that if they put their feet down they'll get hurt.
  19. I think it's important to stress that once you've done what you can safely to avoid inconveniencing the landowner, your priority as ever is to land under a level canopy in a space that permits it without impacting obstacles. If that space is a crop field or a pasture containing animals, then so be it. I have a friend who found herself over the same horse paddock not once but twice within the space of a few weeks. The first time she landed within it and one of the horses bolted, damaging a gate (and presumably itself). The landowner was extremely upset and aggressive. The second time my friend was determined to avoid it at all costs, and broke her arm as a result. Could have been much worse. Personally if I land off and the landowner is around, the first thing out of my mouth will be an apology. Why on earth wouldn't it be? It costs nothing, and regardless of the cause, you're on his or her land without permission.
  20. My local DZ has a sign for the smokers: "When the floor is full, please use the ashtrays provided."

    Trolls

If only we could squirt them with a huge water spray bottle.
  22. Interesting site. I see rounds are now square.
  23. Tracking uphill would make jump tickets a LOT cheaper It's not so much the uphill element that made it look weird - it's the fact that they were moving so slow!
  24. There's definitely a whiff of troll about this thread, but... It's all free ahead of the medical bills! Make sure he understands the potential consequences for him as they've been stated here. Yes, it's his responsibility to look into it, but you now have information that may change his mind. The fact that you don't want him to change his mind is no excuse, in my opinion, for leaving him ignorant. Sounds like you're going to go ahead with this no matter what people say here, so I can only hope you'll do your research and plan. Impulsiveness and aerial sports are not a good mix.
  25. I love the little 'Modified Vehicle' disclaimer that pops up. Just in case, you know, you were planning to buy your own Chevy Sonic for the purpose of chucking it out of an aeroplane. "What? You mean the parachute doesn't come as standard?!"
