Wait, the NY Times is a liberal paper?
peacefuljeffrey replied to AggieDave's topic in Speakers Corner
Thanks for your opinion. We'll add that to the 6 billion others in the world. I didn't realize that there are 6 billion other people who think Bush is a disgrace to the office of President. But I can't say I'm surprised. I doubt that your interpretation is what he meant. Is Bush's disgrace anything like Bill Clinton's (and his wife's)? Is it more like Mario Cuomo (former NY gov.) whoring himself to DORITOS for t.v. commercials? -Jeffrey -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!" -
Agreed. They really use it to self-sustain their budgets, and their little authoritarian fiefdoms. Each head of a department, be it DEA, FBI, state police, local police, BATFE, is like a little lord, looking to continue to have an excuse for a huge budget, power over the people, and lots of little fun lethal toys. Wow, that poor guy!! I'll bet his legal costs are astronomical! He's probably lookin' at thousands of years in prison, too! -Jeffrey -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Because they aren't allowed to use strictly their own money for the campaigns. Nice apples and oranges comparison. I think it's wrong that the government says that a person who wishes to be elected to public office cannot use his own wealth to advertise his candidacy. I'd like to see someone articulate the "good reasons" for this policy, since if the concern is that the guy will offer people money in exchange for voting for him, well, we already have laws against offering things in exchange for a vote. And if the goal is to keep money out of politics, well, what difference does it make whether a guy spends his own money on a campaign or gets tens of millions of dollars (or is it hundreds of millions of dollars nowadays?!) given to him to use in the same way he'd have used his own money? -Jeffrey -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... I think we're looking at a tautology, here. If the majority of the people in the community were not stupid enough to go for such policies, enabling "the bums" to be voted out, they would be represented in an approximate equal proportion IN the school board, and the policies would never have gotten enacted in the first place. The problem originates with the fact that we, here, pointing out the stupidity of these policies probably really are the minority, among soccer moms and milquetoast office-bound pansy-dads -- who DO clamor for such "safety" policies. Face it, folks: smart people are in the minority around the country and around the world. And the majority makes the rules. -Jeffrey -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... 8 Mile -- um... WTF kinda ending is that?!
peacefuljeffrey replied to peacefuljeffrey's topic in The Bonfire
I'm glad I rented this for only $.99, 'cause although I kinda liked it okay, there is NO ENDING! WTF? I expected another half hour of movie after he wins the "battle" against Papa Doc! And um, there was a bit left unresolved with the ho who cheated on him... They made it seem like there was gonna be something there between them and then um, kaput. Undeveloped story left hanging. I thought there was gonna be a point in the movie where he actually performed that song "Lose Yourself." Oh well. Possibly I'm overanalyzing what amounts to a silly "hip hop" movie that really doesn't mean jack shit. Sorry for wasting your time. -Jeffrey -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... That article (check the link) said that she is allowed to spend up to X amount ($290 or something) per month in the prison commissary. So yeah, she can't go rolling waterbeds into her cell or stuff like that, and can't order in from The Four Seasons... Too bad. -Jeffrey -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... You're absolutely right. It is a very different thing for people who do actually own guns to joke about what they might do with them than for someone who doesn't even have them. Such flippant, assinine jokes, are indeed telling about a person's character. Kerry should know better, and he doesn't. By the way, that shotgun he accepted as a gift? Hypocritical. It would be banned under legislation he supports. What a shitstain this man is. -Jeffrey -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

Did John Kerry get a less than honorable discharge?
peacefuljeffrey replied to chuckbrown's topic in Speakers Corner
Yes, several times. In Paris as well as Hanoi. Kissinger did it under the authority of President Nixon. That's not how Kerry did it. He, as a Naval reservist, did not have governmental authority to meet with, negotiate with, or transact dealings with, the North Vietnamese. Ciels- Michele Oh yes, Nixon. The HONORABLE Richard Nixon. Ahh, I see... Nothing to say about the difference between having official government authority to meet with foreign powers and just up and deciding to do it on your own as a freelancer... so instead you'll just obfuscate by bringing Nixon's character into it. Regardless, he was president, and it was under his authority that Kissinger met with the enemy. Not so with John Kerry, whose visit was outside the law, and quite possibly treasonous. Next time you don't have a a valid argument, don't make such an obvious and pitiful attempt to distract from the pith of the matter. Who gives a shit that it was "the honorable Richard Nixon"? We all know he was a scumbag. I spit on his memory. But the fact that he was president makes all the difference in the world when it comes to his envoy's visit to Paris and John Kerry's little jaunt. You just tried to muddy that up or make us forget about it with your pointless comment about Nixon. -Jeffrey -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!" -

If they were making tandem videos in the '70s...
peacefuljeffrey replied to peacefuljeffrey's topic in The Bonfire
I'm sure I would never want to hear such an "obvious" song as "Freefalling" in a skydive video. Too much of a gimmee. I like the other suggestions you posted. Those would be great '70s songs for a skydive video. On the subject of modern songs, has anyone heard of a girl named Patty Rothberg? I caught up with a demo CD of hers called "Between the One and Nine." It has some awesome songs on it, and there's one really bright positive one called, "Change Your Ways" that I think could be a good song for a tandem video. "I dreamed I was a butterfly No end to the rainbow in the clear blue sky Woke up with the stardust still in my eye I said 'Life's a dream, I'm gonna give it a try!' Because now is the time to change your ways, Now is the rest of your days So forget old dreams that have passed this way No more hangin' on to yesterday Baby, reminiscin' bout all the years Feelin' too much pain, cryin' too many tears But there's a smile on my face for every tear that I cry We all have a rainbow deep inside..." I find myself surprised we haven't heard more from Patty Rothberg. -Jeffrey -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!" -
You have dreams about bad acting?! LOL! That is really funny! I sometimes have dreams where I'm in a gun battle with bad guys like in a movie. Sometimes I'm really bad ass and I kill a bunch of bad guys. Other times, the gun won't work right: trigger is impossibly hard to squeeze; ammunition is all weird jumbled assorted calibers and won't feed; magazine is wrong shape and size, etc. Sometimes the gun will fire but the bullet will droop out with all the muzzle velocity of my old Marksman spring-loaded BB pistol! I did have a funky cool skydiving dream a few months ago where I was on a metal grate platform atop a tower, and I was there with several people to do a BASE jump (which I have never done). I suddenly realized I was not wearing my rig, so I got really nervous/vertigo because of being unprotected should I fall. I spotted the rig leaning against a girder of the tower, and was clutching another girder as I went toward my rig. Then something changed in my mind, and I "realized" that I was really powerful and could FLY, so I didn't need the rig anyway! So I jumped off the tower, freefell for a while, and when I was right near the ground, just rotated to my feet and landed like some sort of gymnastics dismount, straight body, arms up and out in triumph!

I must not have been around for the thread that this is based on as a parody. Could you let me know what the original "real" subject was? I imagine it was someone complaining about unsafe skydivers or something... Is there a thread you could link me to? -Jeffrey -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Um, my point is that she has plenty of her own money and does not need financial help of any sort, from anybody! So these people are essentially making themselves out to be chumps by giving her their own money, when, ahh, chances are they are not worth hundreds of millions of dollars, as she is. -Jeffrey -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... PayPerView won't air Michael Moore pre-election "special" LOL! That lying piece of shit can't get people to show his drivel! I love it! Oh, here's a quote of his bitching and whining about it: I wonder if this is sort of like when he claimed that Disney broke a contract with him, when it came out later that he lied, and mischaracterized their deal, and they had said from the beginning that they would not distribute F-9/11. And then he says that it's another vast, right-wing conspiracy to "prohibit Americans from seeing this film." WTF is he talking about?! Who has prohibited anyone from seeing this piece of shit? Do you mean it didn't have a huge theater run? Do you mean it isn't available at Blockbuster, or Hollywood Video, for a couple of bucks? Just what fuckin' definition of "prohibited" are you using, you useless piece of shit?! I'd like to know how a company not wanting to dirty their hands with his pathetic little diatribe-movie is "prohibiting" anyone from seeing it. Moore and Moore lies... -Jeffrey -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

Ohhhh when I woke up this one freaked me out to remember. I dreamed that I was under canopy (don't remember the rest of the skydive) and some weird wind came from my right side and collapsed my canopy (despite the fact that I fly an airlocked Lotus)... Anyway, I was at only between 500-1000 feet, setting up my pattern for landing almost. I remember trying to pull the risers to make something happen, and at some point I also deployed my reserve, and I'm not sure but I may have cut away my main or maybe I left it thinking that it might still help me get something I could land. Whatever I did, though, I knew it failed to help, because I had a major ground-rush (I can still see the image I had in the dream) and I knew I was about to die from a horrendous impact with the ground. Immediately after the impact, which I didn't feel as pain, I was standing before a door in a house, and I opened it to see my brother in a bedroom. I think he had been asleep. I woke him up, because I had to ask him if I were dead or not! I couldn't tell!! I have skydiving dreams now and then, but I don't think I ever had one where I couldn't make something good happen after a mal. Funny, though, that lots of them do involve mals. This dream may have had something to do with two things: - I had my first cutaway last week - I had just recently watched a Twilight Zone DVD that had an episode where a woman sees a hitchhiker over and over again, until she finally finds out that she had been killed days before due to a tire blowout, although she thought she had escaped the accident unharmed. So tell about your own weird skydiving dreams, okay? I can't be the only one who has them! -Jeffrey -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

Man, there are some really fuckin' dumb people in this world! People are actually sending Martha Stewart money and gifts while she's in prison -- as if she fuckin' needs money with like a personal worth of $300 million!! I can just imagine, these people are probably squeaking by, and Martha's their idol, and they're acting like Jerry Falwell just told them the devil's gonna take him if they don't send in a check. What the fuck do they think Martha Stewart needs their money for?! -Jeffrey -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

Would you watch this execution?
peacefuljeffrey replied to peacefuljeffrey's topic in Speakers Corner
You've missed the entire point of it being hypothetical. I know it's not the way it would happen. It's irrelevant whether any part of my question is "unrealistic." I guess I'm just failing to get through to you. At this point, I'm giving up. I have better things to do. Oooh, look, there's a thread about what song is stuck in my head! See? A more worthwhile pursuit already! -Jeffrey -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!" -
Dude, according to what I was told, it was paper companies in the early 20th century that lobbied to get marijuana made illegal, for the reason that it would compete and kick the shit out of the paper mills. (But I'm sure it's been fought against by the cotton industry too.) You didn't think drugs have always been illegal, did you? It's a 20th century, bigwigs/fatcats-protecting-their-profits thing. People used to be able to buy cocaine at the corner drug store! It was said to "settle the nerves" and shit like that. It was an ingredient in Coca-Cola for cryin' out loud. Drug criminalization is a "new" thing! Then it'll take electing a guy who is not yet a politician, who will spearhead such a drive. Someone who's not afraid he will lose power because he favors legalization; he'll have never had power -- his power will come from his stance for legalization! Have you ever heard of "Reefer Madness"? I haven't seen it, but it's supposed to be a movie about how "reefer" (pot) makes people go crazy. They tried, in the early 20th century, to make it seem like pot did to people what PCP does, making them go berserk. The war against drugs like pot is like the war against gun ownership: those who want prohibition HAVE TO LIE in order to make a case against these things. Without lies, there IS no case. -Jeffrey -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

And then there are people like me, who everybody thinks would smoke pot, and who doesn't and never has! Weird. I guess if I wanted to stop being thought of that way, I'd cut my hair. Yes, cotton and paper. Hemp can be used for paper, too. And yeah, it's a more durable fiber for garments, I think. And it's supposed to be more efficient to grow and yield, I think I heard somewhere. -Jeffrey -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

Has anyone here read John Ross' Unintended Consequences? Deals a lot with abuse of authority, and the way in which a populace pushed too far might take back their power over their government. In a case like this, it might come down to cop-killing, with a note left on the body saying, "Abused his authority; violated my right against warrantless search." If enough people rose up violently against abuse like that, you'd probably see what happened in the book happen in real life. The abusive authorities would either go so nuts that the rest of society would also rise up in protest, or they'd stand the fuck down / get out of the business / just cease their abusive shit. Now, I ain't sayin' I "approve" of it, just sayin' it's an option that I'm sure people consider now and then. -Jeffrey -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

OMG! Tonight I went flying solo for my night currency (3 takeoffs and landings in 90 days in order to be able to fly passengers day/night). I did the landings at Lantana (home airport), then flew to Boca to do a landing at a towered (class D) airport, just for the hell of it. On the way back home I headed northwest to the edge of the Everglades to do a few 360s. I was about to roll into a left 360 when all of the sudden, flashing before my eyes in the swath of the landing light, which I left on for visibility, was a splash of movement!! For the first instant, I had the momentary impression of the explosion of a big firework. In another instant, I realized that it was a flock of fifteen, maybe twenty large birds, arranged like a shotgun blast, but I have no idea what kind. Maybe herons or eagrets. They went right over the top of me, man, with an altitude difference of maybe 50- 100 feet! Freaked me out for a second, and I was sure glad I had had that landing light on! It's old wisdom I was handed down from my dad, a pilot too: birds will avoid and fly around the light. Yayyy! Blue skies, -Jeffrey -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind...
