What's the coldest temperature you've ever seen where you live?
el_chester replied to BillyVance's topic in The Bonfire
-43C (-45.5F) when I lived near Montreal in 2003. I called my family in Mexico where they had +27 (80.5F) on the very same day. That's a 70C (126F) degree difference!!!!!! -- Be careful giving advice. Wise men don't need it, and fools won't heed it. -
I would assume that therefore when tandems malfunction, they have a pretty good chance of landing out under reserve. Is anyone aware of any injuries because of out-landings under reserve on tandems? Even if having tandems exit last is the common practice almost everywhere, if I was a tandem master, I would feel uncomfortable knowing that on long spots, I am likely to land out if I have a malfunction. Of course this varies from DZ to DZ, but for DZs where a long spot puts the malfunctioned tandem pair in a compromised situation, I'd revise procedures. -- Be careful giving advice. At the original poster's experience level (and probably at most people's), I'd STRONGLY recommend against trying this. If you turn back more or less at the middle of the skydive, you'll end up opening more or less over the flight line, but chances are you will have shifted up or down the flight line into another group's airspace. Scary. To the original poster: please discuss any advice here with your local instructor/load organizer/STA before going and trying these things on your own. -- Be careful giving advice. That was the one I was looking for when I started this thread... It is amazing that someone would spend so much time on something like this, isn't it? It's the best-looking I've found out there. Still, there are others which have made me laugh more. -- Be careful giving advice. Wise men don't need it, and fools won't heed it.

What is this thing in this Airbus 380 picture?

Thanks! So... another question for you all... what is the 747 spraying downwards at 2:51 on this video? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c62STrlepIk&mode=related&search= -- Be careful giving advice. Wise men don't need it, and fools won't heed it. -
I was not at World Twam 04 (only 06), but from what I heard, what happened is a person caught his reserve handle on exit. I suppose that on such a case, if the reserve had a bad mal, one could hope to do rigging (you have enough time/altitude) and cut all reserve lines with your hook kinfe (provided you have one - which to my understanding is a given when doing such bigways). Then open your main. But given a landable reserve, I´d just ride it down, as Dieter did. -- Be careful giving advice. Wise men don't need it, and fools won't heed it.

How many of you have had a low turn?
el_chester replied to Rafaellimon's topic in Safety and Training
Did this landing take place in Cuautla? If so, it is worth mentioning that that DZ lies at 4700ft above sea level, and that although the landing area is not small for experienced jumpers, with a full otter's load landing at the same time it can get intimidating for less expereienced jumpers. I have jumped there more than anywhere else, and I recently used the density altitude / wingload calculator and found out that (without my real knowledge, or anybodys concern - not even the DZO's) when I got back into the sport after not jumping much for over 3 years, I purchased the equivalent of sea level 1.75 wingloading at 200 jumps, thinking I was getting 1.5 (which in itself would still have been high and if I had only known better I would not have chosen that canopy). Eventually I did a step-back in my canopy progression because I luckily realized before I ever got hurt that I was not advancing in a safe manner. -- Be careful giving advice. LOL, I had not checked on this thread since I started it, hahaha. Thanks guys! -
I know PC people tend to doubt switching to Mac, but given that the new intel macs CAN run windoze (if you should REALLY need it), IMO you can't go wrong with a MacBook It all depends on your needs. Microsoft Office does run great on macs. Never in over 7 years have I had a problem sharing documents with PCs Here's apple proselitism to try to get PC people to switch to macs. -- Be careful giving advice. Do you have the latest version of quicktime? Also, I forgot to mention that if you like the music, it's a song called Kothbiro, by Ayub Ogada, the album is on the Real World Records label (Peter Gabriel's record label). I've had the album for many years and love it. -- Be careful giving advice. Wise men don't need it, and fools won't heed it. -

Swoops from 300ft to 665ft
el_chester replied to NewClearSports's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I'm curious to know where you got that from? I used to high-jump in high school (it now seems impossible to me that I once cleared 5'10") and I've never heard about any such rule. The diving with your back So a quick googling gave me: HIGH JUMP RULES: - You must take off from one foot - You must not touch the ground or landing area beyond the uprights without first clearing the bar - If the bar falls off before you leave the mat it is a failure - You are eliminated after three consecutive failures or HIGH JUMP RULES ACCORDING TO WIKIPEDIA "However it would be a solitary innovator at Oregon State University, Dick Fosbury, who would bring the high jump into the next century. Taking advantage of the raised, softer landing areas by then in use, Fosbury added a new twist to the outmoded Eastern Cut-off. He directed himself over the bar head and shoulders first sliding over on his back and landing in a fashion which would likely have broken his neck in the old sawdust landing pits. After he used this Fosbury flop to win the 1968 Olympic gold medal, the technique began to spread around the world, and soon floppers were dominating international high jump competitions." -- Be careful giving advice. Have You Ever Fudged YOUR Jump Numbers?
el_chester replied to katiebear21's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Yeah... to get into World Team. After we'd done the 400-way I told Kate and BJ that I actually had 507 jumps going into the event, not 620 as I had told them originally. We all had a good laugh -
Song at iTunes music store Lyrics and video here There’s only so much you can learn in one place The more that I wait, the more time that I waste I haven’t got much time to waste, it’s time to make my way I’m not afraid of what I’ll face, but I’m afraid to stay I’m going down my own road and I can make it alone I'll work and I'll fight, Till I find a place of my own Are you ready to jump? Get ready to jump Don’t ever look back, oh baby, Yes, I’m ready to jump Just take my hands Get ready to jump -- Be careful giving advice. Wise men don't need it, and fools won't heed it.
