  1. If that is something someone has to really wonder about, I mean if it takes a lot of thought, reflection, pondering, etc to answer that question - the person might want to see if they could trade in the genes or brain or both. 2. Morality is never "driven out" by any one or any organization. It is a fluid thing, constantly changing, albeit usually in tiny increments. Your comment is typical of the hyperbole seen when someone doesn't like the direction in which morals are moving. Slavery, human sacrifice, infanticide - all considered perfectly acceptable at some time in the past by most people of the day; and all those changes faced strong resistance by people fearful of changing mores. Every society blames their perceived weaknesses and difficulties on some boogey man or another. In the USA there are those that think gay marriage will destroy the fabric of society. In Saudi Arabia they think allowing women to vote would do the same. Guess what, the fabric of society will never be destroyed - it just keeps morphing based on commonly accepted norms. 3. I believe all Western Democracy's are in deep trouble. In a democracy the wishes of the majority are supposed to be honored. But what happens when the majority has lost their sense of sanity and continue to demand special interest programs which are just not sustainable and end up bankrupting the society it is supposed to service? It does not matter if we are talking about a demographic that demands their government supplied "nanny state" where everything we need in life is given to us on a silver platter, or if another demographic is demanding massive military spending. Every where you look you see governments spending money that they do not have and who is responsible for this spending. Yes politicians need to take a lot of blame ever since they discovered spending equals votes equals power. But we the people are mainly to blame, because we the people are incapable of seeing we are living in societies that can not be sustained. Good summation. Pretty soon, everybody will be somebody, and nobody will be anybody. 4. I got it figured out. But since it's a matter of faith, and strictly personal, I don't recruit. It's not something that can be known - not in the way we can know the age of the Sun or the motions of planets. Therefore, any explanations that do not violate existing evidence are valid. If they are testable, then they might be a theory. If not testable, then they are just an opinion. It's early, I'm rambling, and I will stop. 5. Teach them from 2 perspectives: 1 - Just the facts; what we do know about climate cycles and their impact to the geology, flora, and fauna of the planet. Also, the delicate balance our biosphere is in that allows for life as we know it. 2 - The policies and positions of various parties so they can get a good understanding of the hazards of politicizing a topic. 6. Used to be. It took a bit for them to learn that this wasn't the correct way. Re: Crusades So then you admit that the Christians of today should not be characterized the same as Christians of 600 years ago. It's a shame that others here haven't updated their view from more recent history. The enforcement of their dogma has changed dramatically; but the dogma itself has changed very little. In other words - they no longer burn people at the stake, but they still hold most of the same beliefs and positions. It appears to take them what, about 500 years to apologize for some of their past atrocities - and they are barely apologies at that. And the literal interpretations of some of the really outrageous stuff in The Bible - give me a break. If a person had no previous exposure to the history of religious activity and someone came up and told those stories as if they were factual; they'd be someone to be avoided. So basically, they are still selling the same Neolithic myths, but are no longer allowed to legally kill those who question them. 7. How about this one? It was on TV a while back. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faces_of_Death Death scenes for entertainment only. I would not have guessed FoD would ever be shown on TV. Must be some obscure cable channel? BTW, I read somewhere very little of those are real (like only 2 or 3 scenes), the rest is just good effects (for their time). But anyway - I think there is a big difference between some over-the-top macabre psuedo-silly terror flick designed to get people trembling on the edge of their seat, versus something produced to spread the word of Christianity - or is there? 8. Regarless of what they are selling, use of that video shows extremely poor judgement - and taste. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  9. that makes more sense than pro abortion anti death penalty. Kill the inocent kids but save the mass murderer. Death penalty, suicide, abortion, murder, caualties of war, etc. Apparent contradictions in approach are just that - apparent. To know if the person's beliefs are consistent requires knowing the principles behind them. If they have non-cntradicting principles that support each belief (for instance OK with abortion, against capital punishment), then there is nothing inconsistent going on. If on the other hand they claim something like the sanctity of life for being against abortion, but are OK with capital punishment - then they are cherry picking - or lieing about their principles. 10. Since my shop has a group policy my wifes insurance has pregnancy covered with a higher premium eventhough my wife cannot get pregnant nor can I get her pregnant. these are some of the things in insurance that really piss me off because the pregnancy coverage is espensive but I don't want to pay for it. I am made to pay about $100 a month for something I don't want and cannot use. All this stuff in the health care bill adds to the list of things you pay for but don't use or want. Expecting not to have to pay premiums for specific conditions is not reasonable. It would be like young people asking to have their premium reduced by whatever premiums amounts are reflective of Alzheimer's and other diseases of old age. In a way, plans that have rating bands based on age already do that, but it reflects general utilization by age, not by excluding benefits for specific conditions. It's not really insurance if each person gets to pick the specifics they want to cover or not. It really needs to be an all in or fold thing or the cherry-picking becomes destructive to the pool. 11. Neither is the Fed. The people are supposed to be. But it is interesting to see that you do not care about seperation of church and state. The people get to elect the government. The people have no say in selecting bishops or popes. If the church wants separation, it shouldn't concern itself with governance except for its own. The Roman bishops are inserting themselves in a secular matter. Incorrect The state is telling a churh it has to supply birth control and morning after abortion drugs This is against a long standing church positon the state by default is tell the church what to do So the church IS concerned with only its own The drugs are still available are they not? It is just a question of who pays for them Your twist is just laughable The way you word that, and the way a lot of people are manipulating statements, is very misleading. I'm not aware of any church that supplies BC, or has been told they must. Basically, the government has told them that if they want to stick their nose in the health care financing business, they must abide by the rules of insurance. One of those rules (and I'm very broadly stating the concept), is that they can not decide not to cover certain services because of their religious beliefs. On top of that, if they are in any way involved in a government funded program, putting qualifications or restrictions on that program based on religion is not allowed. 13. Yes I agree...but are you willing to pay $10 / lb of coffee and $1k for an Ipod in the name of human rights? are you willing to live with a flat 401k that never grows? We want cheap products and a retirement fund that will allow us to live well. And thus we need cheap labor....which then takes away our jobs..... No matter how you cut it...not good! You've answered your own question. Wanting everything, wanting it now, wanting it cheap, then wanting it all over again next month (or next year) when the newest version is available IS the problem. 14. It mainly came about because of Carter imposed wage freezes Huh? Where you getting this? The 1st health care plans began in 1933 or 1935. They were a very standard part of employee compensation packages for large employers long before Carter was President. (You are talking about Jimmy, right?) The 1st plans were community based and actually set up by hospitals and their docs because the cost of care began to exceed what average people could afford out of their pocket on a pay-as-you-go basis. They became a way of attracting employees way before Carter. And yes, in response to the OP; there is much in our society that is the result of the historical treatment of females as a class of humans just below males, and not far above slaves. Interesting

What is being measured here? What is it that O'Reilly has 3,292,000 of? Why do they all happen to end in 000? " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  16. One more word on this. The long term health of our own economy (USA) is largely dependent on human rights advances in developing countries. As their freedoms and standard of living are allowed to rise, the playing field levels. So if you're looking for a cause, basic human rights is a great place to start. 18. There is no way out - other than isolation, and that seems very unlikely. We are experiencing the darker side of globalization of labor. It's been a slow build-up since the 50's, really kicking in big since the 70's, and now in full gear. There is no way we can compete overall with the current cost of overseas labor. Our economy is going to be very tight until the playing field levels again. It's hard to say how long that will take (everybody's guess is just that - a guess); but this amatuer economist says at least 2 to 3 decades. Lots of factors could lengthen that, very few could shorten it. Additional developing economies (there is a lot of untapped labor out there) will almost certainly come into play adding to competition. Catastrophic events (such as wars, famines, natural disasters) could take some players out. I've heard some point to a solution being to do something that nobody else does, or does much of, or does well. IMO, in our world of copycat technology, such solutions are temporary at best - but probably still worth doing. The other problem with relying on technology so much (other than the fact it always gets copied) is that it is no longer directly linked to production. Being super-duper at high tech is great for providing the world with innovation, but means nothing for 10's of millions of workers if the bulk of the production goes overseas. So basically, unless we want to isolate ourselves, or go back to being an imperial power raping undeveloped states of their resources - this is the way it's gonna be for a good while. It is no secret we've been heading this direction since about the late 70's, but between the inevitability of it, the fact that capital's interests are not the same as labor, and our leadership's reluctance to be honest - it was and continues to be largely ignored. It'll be amusing to watch the White house change hands the next few times, as the parties point fingers and claim to be able so save us from ourselves. It'll be even more amusing when they realize they can't do a thing about it, yet still continue to point to the other party. 19. My impression also. What was he looking at and why? He should have been finding and getting to his friends. Then, not even a glance at the canopy or altimeter, after a canopy collision? Regardless of other factors, his skill level dictates no more camera for now. Hope they made him leave it on the ground after that. 23. I'd cut him some slack. Some of The Onion stuff is so well done that if a person had no exposure to that flavor of comedic relief they could be honestly deceived. If he picked up a hard copy and didn't get it, that might fall into the extremely naive category, but exposure to a single online article is different. Had a boss once that was a genuine silver spoon type. Had to drive a few hours back from a meeting instead of fly, due to weather. Stopped at a McD's and he sat down and was waiting for the waitron. 50-some years old and had never been to an eatery without waitrons. Some people are that far removed from what most consider routine exposure. 24. Jeez Louise. Don't we have bigger fish to fry? If this is some private party moron with nothing better to do, they need to simply be ignored. If there is any government effort going into it, those people need to be given some real work to do. 25. There's a new sex toys store in our town. Actually, it's an old sex toys store, which I just recently found, . . . by accident. I'm aghast, . . . that nobody told me it was there years ago. I'll need to go for a closer inspection before I file a complaint.
