Sounds reasonable. I expect there is some correlation between level of overall prosperity and suicide rate. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

It would be more fair to say that on certain narrowly defined topics for which they have been brainwashed since birth, they are incapable of rational thought. I think a lot, if not most people have these blind spots in their logic. It's just that when they are so extreme (talking snakes, virgin births, zombies rising from the grave, a big boat with 2 of every animal, etc) it tends to really stick out. And some nappy headed whores. Not that Don Imus said ALL black women are nappy headed whores, or that all basketball players are nappy headed whores, or anything like that. So of course any assumption that he is racist is completely ill founded - especially since he did not say that being a nappy headed whore is a bad thing. Maybe it was his way of giving a compliment? Yeah that's it, it was a compliment. Did he explicitly say they were evil or bad because of their nappy headed whore status? No? Then no racism, right? Sheesh. You must have missed the part that's bolded - I re-quoted it for you. Challenge still stands. Put up or shut up. He's a racist, not stupid. Your criteria seems to require that he admit to criticizing people for their skin color. He certainly will not do that. I guess it is just an amazing coincidence that so much of his criticism is towards black people. Why are conservatives so frequently accused of racism
pirana replied to sundevil777's topic in Speakers Corner
What makes you think Cosell was a conservative? I watched him for years and never remember him venturing into the world of politics. The exception was his frequent leadership in the realm of sports broadcasting on things like recognizing Muhammed Ali's legitimate name change. If I was to guess I woul put my money on Cosell being a Dem, but I wouldn't put a lot either way. BTW when Cosell made the monkey comment the RB in question was the same age as one of his grandchildren. He probably called them monkeys as well. When Jesse Jackson and Ali showed up to have Cosell's back the next day it was not to sanctify grovelling and contrition, it was to give testimonial that Cosell had been a friend of equality his entire career. I suspect it will always be with us. My sister thinks the people who live across the river are all crazy (well, they are protestants after all). Racism has to do with how you treat people you DON'T know, not how you treat those close to you. Forming opinions about someone you are close to has nothing to do with racism. Forming opinions on pople you do not know based on their skin color is racism. My father and pretty much all of my uncles were the same. They had black coworkers they respected because they knew them personally and it overrode their racist beliefs. But blacks they did not know were niggers to be avoided. This is true. Unfortunately, politicians are using the racecard for political gain. You can only cry wolf so many times before people stop believing you. Behaviour such as this only serves to be detrimental to the abolishment of racism. As you can see by my avatar I'm not white so let me ask you something. If someone who happens to be white disagreed with me and even went so far as to insult me by calling me a liar here on dz.com, would you consider the insulter to be racists simply because I have a darker complexion than him/her? No. But only because name calling and straight to the point insults here are very regular. If it were done in a place where such behavior is rare; I would consider it a strong possibility. And when a person has an easily discernible trend of always hating on people of the same nationality, race, sexual preference, etc; it is no coincidence. I heartily agree that any behavior that calls for differential treatment, advantageous or egregious, will continue to propogate racist attitudes. From a purely academic standpoint, race has traditionally been one of the 3 first level determinants of culture. The 3 are race, religion, and language. However, that was when race pretty much meant skin color to most people. Bluntly, cultural groups were identified by their looks, their worship, and their speech. Nowadays race is being looked at from 2 different perspectives that were not prevelant in the past: 1) from a genetic perspective, which shows race to not be nearly as differentiating a factor as before and not just a skin color thing, and 2) From a social and political perspective telling us that it is an incorrect criteria for differentiating altogether. Truth is though that a lot of people still categorize by skin color, and hold certain beliefs about what that means about people of that color. It often shows in how they language their thoughts. As an aside, it is interesting to note that propogation of such criteria for differentiation persists strongly at both ends of the spectrum. From programs that use the phrase "community of color" to racists that use the term nigger. A lot of people just can't let it go, but for different reasons that suit their diferent belief-based needs. Why are conservatives so frequently accused of racism

Fact: Don Imus referred to some black female basketball players as nappy haired whores. There are white players. Never heard of him calling them whores, and guessing he has not. Fact: Howard Cossell referred to a black football player as a monkey. Not aware he ever used, and my guess is he never did use, that term for a white player. Just 2 right off the top of my head; but racist is as racist does (or says). Why the people that use such language (which is a window into their beliefs) at least seem to be mostly of a conservative ilk is hard to say exactly. But it is what it is. The type of insult hurled at Obama is something nearly unheard of on the floor of Congress. Just a coincidence that it was directed at the first black President? Maybe. But when incidents become a pattern, the excuses begin to wear thin. Racism in subtle and not so subtle forms is all around us and will probably take many more generations to die. What she said. When the object of someone's vitriolic blathering is so narrowly focused day after day, when a person's criticisms are so consistently directed to one group, when they seem completely hung up and on the defense whenever that bias is questioned; then that behavior is what they are. If it walks and quacks and looks like a duck. It is a duck. Asking me or anybody else to prove it is a duck is just a silly waste of time. But your "Same to you" response is so much more convincing. Why not just throw out 'I know you are but what am I?' I'm going to pretend the post was an invitation to each take a turn. 1 - People that refuse to accept responsibility for their lot in life. 2 - Mushy vegetables. I mean really; stewed tomatoes, boiled spinach, puree of asparagus?! Where did such an atrocious habit of boiling the snot out of veggies come from, and why on Earth do people continue to do so? 3 - People that are afraid to make decisions. (A work related item, drives me nuts when people waffle indefinitely, often over minute details. Here's how it works - Gather information, analyze, consider options, decide, do, move on). 4 - Lingering right smack dab in the middle of the aisle. I've got a life to lead, move your ass to one side or the other so I can get at the pasta section and make my way to the checkout. Similar to those that drive exactly the speed limit in the left lane, they are either oblivious to the world around them or just plain rude. 5 - Politicians - all of them. 6 - Talk radio hosts - all of them. 7 - Bona fide whackos. I should take it easy on them, because there must be some sort of genetic defect or childhood-rooted nuerosis behind the behavior, but; Moon hoaxers, Planet Xers, Holocaust deniers, fundamentalists of all sorts, people that truly buy into magic, astrology, tarot, palmistry, etc. 8 - Constipation. 9 - Metric system. 10 - Parents that propogate ignorance by not providing their kids the opportunity to excel. You do not have to be a genius to motivate kids. You definitely do need to be an asshole to suppress curiosity and/or pigeonhole them early in life. Those are in no particular order of importance, and are just off the top of my head. Fun little exercise, good to vent, and no professional therapist needed. Most whuffos expect the explanation of why we do this to be all about the rush, the adrenaline, the thrill. I emphasize the surrealness of experiencing freefall in real time; that although we probably all are hooked on the thrill, once experienced enough to take it in calmly, there is a certain spiritual feeling. That keeps me comng back as much as the adrenaline. The short response to the title of your post - ME TOO! After every day of skydiving I find myself amazed and privileged to have found this sport and the people in it. In who's mind? A two year old? Agreed. If someone thinks there is a place where everything about health care and health care financing is perfect, they probably have one eye closed. Just read the first page, will have to come back for more later. Definitely looking on the mark in the mention of incentives. Isn't it one of the Demming principles that our processes are perfectly designed for the results they produce? I see on page one he already mentions the employer emphasis, and hints at capacity issues. Yes, thanks for posting. BREAKING NEWS: Reasonable people do NOT respect Obama
pirana replied to SkyChimp's topic in Speakers Corner
If you boiled Libertarianism down to a single phrase, that would probably be it. Leave the people the fuck alone! We do not need to be babysat from cradle to grave by the know-it-all assholes from either party. We want the government to do as little as possible while still preserving some sort of civilized social contract. Defend our borders, provide some mechanical infrastructure, and maybe a little record keeping. That's it. Other than that, get the fuck away. It is truly staggering when you think about how comprehensive "social" programs have become. Like it or not, want it or not, need it or not - there is a social program to cover every fucking minute detail of our lives. So comprehensive that a person can have absolutely no ability, no desire, no motivations, no concerns, no cares, no clue - and still somehow exist, much less be seen as a valuable member of society. Another possible explanation - the circus has stopped coming to town. Betwen PETA and professional sports teams (those guys are deep into covert actions to put an end to anything that would compete with them for your entertainment dollar), they have managed to shut the circus out. Since then there have been no more attacks. You don't believe me? Go ahead and load up a clown car. By your logic you could be toying with the destiny of our country. Oh, this is on topic, in a way you can't possibly fucking imagine. Our dogs like to run thru the woods, which is way cool for them, because, ya know, . . . they are dogs. Problem is, there is a good amount of nasty thistle out there, and it was either keep them shaved to the skin, or spend hours removing burrs from the little buggers. Our fuzzy dogs plus thistle is the equivalent of permanent Velcro. I did not want to spend a small fortune on dog grooming, so instead wwent on a campaign to eradicate the thistle. Bear with me just a bit longer. I remember it well because I took a couple days off work to start spraying all the thistle within our 3 acre fenced perimeter; and it was right after 9/11; not a plane in the normally very busy sky. Well! Obvious isn't it? Not a single attack since I started my Thistle Eradication Program. Logic can be made to prove anything you want when you only do half the work. I say, get a clue. No one - no-one - thought that Bin Laden would come over all peace, love and Age of Aquarius if Obama was elected. It is, quite frankly, very stupid to suggest suh a thing. That you think Obama's desire to raise the perception of America in the rest of the world means winning over mad fanatics like Bin Laden only demonstrates your inability to grasp what he actually means when he says that. I wonder what bin Laden's sign is? Think maybe he is a Virgo? You know, that is one line of experts we have not tapped into during this entire ME thing. Or maybe we should consult one of those people that do the Tarot thing. We kidnap bin Laden and have someone do the Tarot thing for him. We of course stack the deck so that his future is going back home to Saudi Arabia and attending veterinary school (or something like that). Problem solved. Indeed. Mission accomplished and all that? It's Dodge folks; with a fucking capital D. As in Dodge City. JFC, no wonder the rest of the world hates us. Ah, a comment that reveals the real crux of the problems in the ME. "Run them out of Dodge." Do people forget that it is THEIR home? I mean, I know most have gotten used to thinking of it as the whole world's oilfield, but it is somebody else's home country - not just our petrol supply warehouse. Most of what is wrong with the ME is wrong just with the ME - though a few Western Fundies sure do give them a run when they ban books, blow up abortion clinics and murder physicians. But the ME fundies are bombing and shooting and beheading hundreds each year, so former Kansas school board members - get with the program. Slackers. There was a piece from The Onion that demonstrated very well what the main problem in the ME is. I'll see if I can link to it or copy it here. Verification signatures in logbooks
pirana replied to AndrewKarnowski's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That's the point I'm trying to argue, any reasons you can think of not to sign with other numbers? Sign with whatever you like; have some fun and use an X and witness. The only thing is if somebody gets picky you are going to have to be able to name the (qualified) person that signed it. The numbers are just for show. You could really push the envelope in making that point and sign with your VISA number. That'll show them how irreverent you can be.
