It's Time to Enact Health Care Reform With 51 Senate Votes
pirana replied to dreamdancer's topic in Speakers Corner
A huge BINGO on this. Having 50 sets of regulations to deal with is ridiculous. It was all with good intentions, left over from when insurance was far more localized. But is is now a form of protectionism that lawmakers are scared shitless to remove. I've never seen any data on what such localization of rules costs, but obviously it is enough to keep all but the very largest of companies from even attempting to enter all 50 markets. I can't even imagine the efficiencies to be gained if there was a single set of rules that all providers, insurers, and patients had to play by. That's some good humor; and you hit a lot of high points in history, with the glaring exception of organized religion. Do you think it was the conservatives or liberals that institutionalized spirituality? [replyEvolution does not meet the requirements for serious scientific consideration. One word - WOW! " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley -
Came across some findings not too long ago from the gene mapping project that showed people are gentically predisposed to being more or less spiritual. Don't remember it tieing to injuries or substance abuse, but do have a couple friends that went down the path of extreme belief changes after bottoming out with an addiction or suffering sever head trauma. Interesting link. I don't know... It seems to be a pretty normal tendency to want to feel good, as opposed to feeling bad. And the placebo effect can be pretty powerful. Sometimes simply believing that something will make you feel better, will actually make you feel better. If a placebo works, cool. But very uncool for them to charge so much for it. Aside from the fact that homeopathy is a lie - but then again I suppose it has to be a lie or it would not be a successful placebo. What a conundrum. Yep. Absolutely amazing when you get down to the science of it all. As an aside, did you know that scientists are studying the effect religion has on endorphins? It's fascinating! Article here: http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg18925361.100-belief-special-how-evolution-found-god.html?page=1 There are genes that appear to have a strong corelation to a person being predisposed to being more or less spiritual. I call them the oogie-boogie genes; but that of course only reflects the probability that they are not turned on for me, . . . yet. But I could be one near-death or other epiphinous event away from them gaining sway. Then it should be easy for you to clear this one up, show me the documentation that makes you so sure that in September 2001 this was the case. please. Do your own footwork. Google cell phone use, just takes a few keystrokes. Nothing special about being at altitude. Signals are weaker, calls get dropped easier, and they chew up capacity because they are hitting multiple stations at once - but there are plenty of people that have used them, and continue to use them. Basically, there is nothing to prevent their use, other than airline rules. Private pilots use their cells on a very regular basis. The seatback phones use the same technology - the only difference is that they are more reliable. You can find the details on why by doing a little reading on your own. Many sources indicate they do work - read them on your own. I can't find a single source that says they do not work, other than Loose Change - and even they retracted that claim in the revised edition of the tripe they peddle. You are several decades behind on the topic. Evolution is proven scientific fact; natural selection as a means of propogation of beneficial traits is a theory (and a very good one at that since observations fit very well with it). On the other had, creation does not accomodate for the observations made. the "right" to healthcare, a different look
pirana replied to TrophyHusband's topic in Speakers Corner
You are absolutely correct that what is being attempted is not really reform; though that term is rather subjective. My observation is that they are basically attempting to tweak the current model for care delivery and care financing. Not a bad approach, since in our quite conservative system of government, radical change is the exception. Marginal changes could be good, but they are bringing forward most of the bad shit and just extending the model. On the issue of whether health care is a right or not, it just becomes a matter of where we will draw the line. Is transportation a right? Food? Shelter? Education? And for all these things, to what level? Some cultures only confer rights that provide the liberty for each individual to pursue their goals. I do firmly believe that is the most fundamental and important right. Other cultures believe liberty to act is not enough, that specific material needs should also be guaraanteed. I'm good with laws along the lines of making it illegal to murder and be murdered. I'm not OK with laws that decree a person must join a sopecific health care delivery or financing pool. That is too far down the path of society micromanaging the individual. To me, rights are about freedoms and liberty. Specific corporeal desires are for the idividual to choose. How likely is it that turing on the camera will help them find a lost computer - unless it is pointing simultaneously at the house number and street sign of it's current location. I mean, if the intended user is using it, then it's not lost, is it? If it has been stolen, seeing the face of the person currently using it is useless unless the viewer just happens to know the thief. If it is lost, say buried in a pile of laundry, what good does the camera do? Only use for this that I can see is if someone reports the computer stolen. An admin can maybe activate the camera and maybe in one in a million case recognize the thief. DZ is turning into tandem factory!
pirana replied to roostnureye's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I'm curious, what is it specifically that makes a DZ a tandem factory? I'm interested in specifics, not vague emotional notions like "The DZO doesn't care about us." What exactly is done to make the place unlikeable for fun jumpers? Unbelievable. I know, how could such a war hero be tied to such corrpution? Oh well, it happens. No, that you can't even reign in your attacks in an obit thread. Of course, given your past history, I really shouldn't have expected anything better of you. Some people are born bitter. Others have to work at it every day. Must be the schools in the red states. A search does show its been spelled that way over 500 times. OOPs has been used over 800 I think this is worth investigating. I mean, it would be different if it were just occasionally incorrect; but getting it right only 61.538461% of the time in such a large sample - I smell a conspiracy. Most likely to do with use of cellphones at freefall speed. They work until about 9k then they don't work anymore. Wow, I really wish someone would have told me that before I called baseops mid-flight a few months ago to report a change in our flight plan...on my cell phone...from 22k feet...and had a conversation with them. This has moved from making points to being humorous. (Probably happened a while back but I was holding out hope). It is documented fact that cell phones do work at altitude, but the evidence is ignored because it does not fit the opinion. Classic CT attitude towards evidence. If you are correct Mr Rhys, better hope nobody ever pokes holes in your tinfoil hat. If they really have no means to fund a defense, then the court will provide a public defender. That's fair enough. Maybe they will get Larry the Ticket Defender. That is false and misleading, you need to do your reaserch a bit better. So, do you think cell phones do not work up there? Are you stating that as a fact you believe to be true? So any of the aircraft buffs out there know how this new version of the Otter stacks up against a PAC fuel efficiency-wise? Will it still burn twice as much fuel as a PAC to get to altitude? It did not need to melt like butter in a microwave. It just needed to soften a bit - which it does quite readily in a hot enough fire. That is just another line of uninformed BS thrown out there and expected to be accepted as gospel by the sheeple. Kinda like their claim that there was no way cell phones work at cruising altitude. They finally had to admit that was a completely conjured lie. This one is no different. Any source still using those numbers has credibility issues. At least they have lowered the range by 10 million. Even still, at least half the number cited fall into one of 2 categories: 1 - They simply don't want it - unless it is truly free - which it never ever will be. 2 - They are not US citizens, and should not be living off the US tit. waiting will get you nowhere, let me give you a hint, you won't find it on fox news or in the new york times... If you want to be free, you do your own research. If you still fail to find what you want, you are avoiding the truth. There is a differnece between avoiding and not finding! I think the responsibility for showing evidence falls on the people making the extraordinary claims. A person making such outrageous claims as the truthers bears some burden for showing what is behind their claims (other than paranoia and distrust). All of the claims have been thoroughly exposed as either lack of understading basic physics or outright hoaxes. What have you got? Anything specific and new; anything other than the same old paranoid ramblings?
