As Christians, we pray to get in communication with the Holy Spirit and to achieve a stronger alignment with the will of God. So is the whole notion of asking for specific favors (for example, asking for someone's disease to go away) rather childish? They don't make people like they used to. Of course there are still people like that - lots of them. Problem is the huddled politically correct masses would no way no how elect somebody like that President these days. The masses are getting exactly what they deserve by demanding their candidates be superficial ideologists; and then on top of that requiring their choice line up exactly with their personal opinion. Such people do not exist; so we end up with a nation led by a bunch of pretenders, actors, clowns, and downright idiots. It remains curious to me why skydivers in other countries express the slightest concern about America's politics. Be that as it may, the 40 Days of Prayer is not political party specific. We are praying for God's will for our country and thus preparing for it. "Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." The kingdom of God is righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, Romans 14:17. But if He is all powerful, why does He need us to pray for His will? If we do not pray, does His power go away, resulting in His will not being done? God doesn't need us to pray. We need to pray to God. OK, let me rephrase. Why do we need to pray? Does He take requests? Will He do some things differently based on the type and volume of prayers? Bottom line, what is the purpose of praying and what is the mechanism in play that allows praying to achieve that purpose? I'm most curious as to why people are prepping? Nobody has specified yet. People who prep must have a reason; what is your's? 1- Social breakdown (failed or overrun government, riots in the street, invasion by other nation(s)) 2- Asteroid or comet impact 3- Alien attack 4 - Any oogie-boogie related to the Mayan calendar/2012 apocalypse 5 - Nuclear war 6- Other, please specify "But just because we're hypnotized it don't mean we can't dance." - Tonio K " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

Fixed it for you. so you believe that those who might be mentally unstable have no rights then. glad we got that out of the way. Tricky thing, the whole rights debate. I think unstable people do have rights; but all rights can be limited if society as a whole deems it necessary. Applies regardless of level of stability. You know, like 90+ percent of Americans these days who sell their vote to the highest bidder. Blues, Dave Please tell me which candidate is doing this and how much can I get? Nixon DID get us out of Vietnam. Not with his "secret plan" though. Try reading some history, you may find it enlightening. Turns out the secret plan was getting our ass kicked. Being facetious of course. Once our leadership figured out we didn't belong, all options for a face-saving exit were gone. And God has yet to heal a single amputee, Now I get it. You want a god that follows YOUR orders. Yeah, that's the ticket. "God bless America" is an order. Repeated daily by all kinds of people. And a movie; very funny one at that. Just saw it a couple nights ago. I have to say it does bother me a bit that I can really identify with a lot of what the main character has to say. Can I use that logic too? Can I rob a bank, then make it up to everybody during the ensuing eternity. I promise I will, eventually. And you think Europeans, generally & overall, are into taking other people down? (Of course they had their historic period where they treated everybody else that way; but we can leave the discussion of the European Age of Imperialism for another time). It would be very strange if he did. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

Does God have a favorite in the race? Has He communicated this to His followers, or are His followers petitioning Him for their favorite? Do all Christians (or all religious people) have the same favorite and want God to throw the election? Or has God decided who will win and is soliciting prayer from His flock? What kind of chaos will there be, and will it be confusing to God if all of His followers do not want the same person to win? If equal numbers of people pray equally vigorously, will the election be a tie? I haven't spent a lot of time in Europe - maybe a total of 3 months. But I still have a hard time believing that is how Europeans think overall about each other. Are you saying most think that way? Just a simple majority? Could you quantify that please? If this is a recovery, what the hell would a depression be like???
pirana replied to rushmc's topic in Speakers Corner
I think there is a simple, but not painless, fix to this And the biggest step is shrinking the gov by more than 30% right off the bat Gradually and very carefully cutting expenses is good. However, a public sector in freefall is a good indicator a society is in it's death throes; much more so than 20% living on the dole. This is something the wealthy don't get because they are certain they can use their money and power to insulate themselves. They are good with abandoning entire sectors of the public domain because they can hire their own. Such as police. They are fine with massive cuts and the short-term consequences - they just hire their own security. I believe I read that private security forces have outnumbered public police since about the mid-90's. History shows a retreating from the public domain is fraught with peril. pirana replied to rushmc's topic in Speakers Corner
This has been smoldering for 4 decades; with the odd splash of gas thrown on here and there by short-sighted leadership. Neither Obama nor anyone else is going to end it quickly. And no, this is not a recovery. I'm afraid we are still a ways from bottoming out, possibly quite a long way. I'm so disgusted with the corruption that is now built into our system (thank you SCOTUS) that I've thought about writing in my own name. I like the thought of there being a record somewhere that indicates I received votes to be POTUS. However, I see Romney as likely to be such a horrible President (maybe worse than the young Bush), I can not do that. Why High Unemployment Rates Will Continue if Obama is Re-Elected
pirana replied to Gravitymaster's topic in Speakers Corner
They certainly will. They will also remain high under Romney. They will also remain high if some other person, any other person, is elected POTUS. Every economist not on a politicians payroll knows this shit is not going away anytime soon. Every politician is afraid to say so. To anyone who disagrees: tell me by what mechanism any elected official is going to turn the economy around in any kind of short order (within a presidential term). Do some people think China is suddenly going to start playing fair with their monetary policy? Do some people think foreign labor (non-US) is going to suddenly price itself out of work and give us back our jobs? Do some people think capital is suddenly going to get warm fuzzies and view American jobs as worth the extra cost of labor? We have a long haul to get back to a healthy economy, and short of a cataclysmic event (major global warfare or other catastrophic paradigm changing event), there is nothing any specific leader is going to do to change that. Scientific Dogma. All-Star level oxymoron. Right up there with Creation Science. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley -

Obama: I actually believe in redistribution (at a certin level)
pirana replied to rushmc's topic in Speakers Corner
This is refreshing; at least compared to those who claim not to be racist but then spew vitriolic BS all day long. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley -

FWIW, "Little Black Sambo" was Burmese, not African. If you see a tiger in Africa, it is in a zoo; tigers are indigenous to Asia. BSBD, ' Winsor It's hard to believe I use to eat at a chain called Sambo's Me too, in the Chicago area as a little kid. So what is your take on this? Seems to me he is touching on the social contract when he emphasizes common good. He acknowledges the downfall of Communism and the benefits of markets and calls for everyone to come to the table and find common good. Seems perfectly reasonable. Is there some part of that clip that you think reveals more than what is being said? I'd like to see their definitions for the terms being used. As this is political in nature, I'm sure they are stretched to the point of being manipulative if not outright deceitful. Funny thing is, they don't get the connection between a very small elite skimming off an increasingly disproportionate share of profits and the increasing number of people needing assistance. Taken to it's extreme, when the top 1% of people claim 99% of the wealth, then the other 99% of people will all be on welfare. Why don't some people get that when all the wealth ends up in a very few hands, the rest will naturally be broke? DUH! Bizarre isn't it. Apparently each sovereign nation on Earth has a different set of sovereign rights, depending on to what level they agree with us and our way of doing things. There must be a chart somewhere that will help us understand. Let's see, . . . despises Israel on the x axis, . . . Muslim leadership on the y axis, . . intersection results are - your rights do not include development of nuclear weapons.
