A waste of time. Nothing will ever top that nasty video of the girls eating poop. For those that had managed to forget, . . . you're welcome. Someone should issue a fatwah requiring 24 X 7 reruns on Al Jez-whatever of Denny Terrio and Dance Fever. They think cartoons are offensive. Now why would the World Wrestling Federation have anything to say about it? " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

"You're very good at whacking." I think from Witness. Some good humor in the posts about us pontificating on this topic. To be honest I don't see what there was in the OP to get nostalgic about. Constant beatings as an alternative to actual parenting? Woop-de-do. Well let's see; a statement that we need to return to these, referring to a list of behaviors from one of those the-way-we-did-it-when-I-was-a-kid articles; presented in a totally unbalanced manner and sounding as if it advocates a return to said behaviors. The nostalgia, and my criticism; Has mostly to do with the artlcle; and I give the benefit of the doubt in assuming the poster doesn't really want a full-fledged return to the early 20th century. I agree with your Whoop-de-do sentiment; but there really are people who think a return to some other time would be a solution. Why brainwash kids at all? Why not teach them how to examine evidence and think for themselves so they can make their own knowledgeable decisions? BINGO. Do your best to raise kind and intelligent kids. They will write the future and do not need to be micromanaged into it with a bajillion rules on specifics. Impart to them wisdom and caring and good things will follow. Kids grab on to unhealthy ideas only because there is a void; and mostly as the result of absent or ineffective parenting. Plant the seeds of wisdom early so when they hit the stages in life where peer influence begins to outweigh parental influence they are armed and have the courage to use their wisdom despite the pressure of their not so well prepared peers. Every kid I've met that went down the destructive path (other than those with significant mental handicap) leaves a trail right back to their early family life; which is parents from birth to pre-teen years, then the peers their parents set them up to be attracted to after that. As a coach I have mentored at least 200 little athletes that represent a good cross section of families; and as a volunteer at alternative learning centers been exposed to a solid block of about the same number of kids on the unhealthy path. I've met a good number of parents and I'm NEVER EVER EVER EVER surprised by the family behind the kid. Not once have I met a troubled kid, then met the parents and said "I wonder how that happened?" Not according to my Grandma. People reminiscing about The Good Old Days really got her undies in a bundle. She was born in 1896 and lived to be 93. Saw the coming and popularization of a shitload of technologies, lived thru 2 World Wars, 1 Great Depression, massive social changes, and on and on. Her take on it was there is no such thing, that life was harder in almost every way imagineable. What's that saying? That these are The Good Old Days that someone in the future is longing to get back to? Nostalgia is fun when it presents the pretty side of the past; but to wish for a return is silly. I think it more resembles what that one song called "dragging the past out of the disposal, rinsing off the scum and prtraying it as they way things were and ought to be." As Bill The Cat would say: "AAAAACK!" Montana prepares to secede from the Union...

Even for SC, this is a sad thread, with triple hypotheticals and crappy comparisons left and right. Agreed. Reminds me of a truly ignorant aquanitance who used to claim Kentucky was not really a state and could go it's own way anytime because it is labeled as a Commonwealth in it's constitution; or some BS like that. Please. I am losing faith in the ability of the average human to put their brain in gear; but they aren'y that stupid, . . . yet. Equity Loans and Refinances Caused More than Half of Foreclosures

I saw another hyperbolic article in the NYT, yesterday or today. They were going on about people in crisis - - the only thing is that the crisis they were referring to is people who owe more than their house is worth. No other problem; they have jobs, are not behind, and are making their payments. But they are asking for "assistance" because IF they wanted to move they could not sell their house for what they owe. How is that a crisis? And why should there be any government (taxpayer) bailout. The average consumer has become a toddler when it comes to financial responsibility. Pretty sure that was Wolfgang Pauli. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

There is (or at least was) a DZ in The Bahamas, but I believe it is on Grand Bahama (Freeport); and I'm pretty sure it is/was very much a tourist tandem operation. I go there at least once per year; I know there are observation ride vendors. It is a very breezy place though. I'd guess the average sport jumper would consider it unjumpable about 60 to 70% of the time. You're better off spending your money on scuba down there. I did not know Angry White Man was running for office again. Is he like that Pat Paulsen guy who used to always run? " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

Of course, it might be better than this alternative. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

You have a lot of good points. Simple reasoning, but I think your post sums up the feeling of a lot of Americans. There seems to be an inherent distrust of her, and your points hit it on the head. What I've never been able to figure out is how she made the transition so fast from First Lady to NY Senator. Not representative, but she was able to go straight to a Senatorial seat. Now, like you pointed out, she had very little to do with New York, it's constituents, or it's politics before... I've researched this and researched this, and the only real information I can find was on Wikipedia..... I guess this Bothers me, even though I myself have little to do with NY. I expect Sam Brownback, our Senior Senator for Kansas, to go up to Capital hill and with his best judgement, represent the people and the interests of Kansas while trying to see the "big picture." I didn't vote for him to go and just do pork-barrel projects for Kansas or just try to get himself reelected, but I expect him to keep his constituents in mind, and then see the bigger picture. This is what I expect of my Senator. With Hilary, I can't see her connection to NY, so how she went within a 2-year period, moved into a state, then almost instantly started representing it, well, this just bothers me. The whole thing just seems like a big grasp for power. Hell, if the Kansas Democrats loved her and we had an open seat, would she have bought a Mansion in Topeka? I'll throw my .02 in. I actually got to see her in a relatively intimate setting of a couple hundred people back when Bill was in office. She came off extremely bad, IMO. Very fabricated, and yes, unable to give a straight answer because she was more concerned with maximizing her image potential than talking honestly about issues. And on the issue of my field (health care financing - the topic of the gathering), she operates from a combination of emotion, anecdotes, and what appears to be having an end result in mind with no understanding of how to get there in a financially responsible manner or what the impact will be. In short, on a topic that is central to her platform, she doesn't know what the hell she is doing. As an aside, I see the AG from the state she adopted as her jumping-off platform to The White House has filed complaints against health insurers over pricing. It is so full of half truths and misleading information that it is hard to believe the media has any objectivity at all on the issue. You know how when you read mainstream journalism's coverage of skydiving it makes you want to gag? They are just as bad when it comes to covering health care and it's financing. Except that for skydiving they are just ignorant; on health care issues there is agenda-driven intentional deception. Talk about thread devolution. It really is a fast moving sucker too; too quick for me to keep up with. Got a good running start to break the Christian-And-Proud-Of-It record, heh? Can a female or non-white win the US presidency?

Practically a foregone conclusion. It's going to be Clinton or Obama for the Dems, and no Rep is going to beat either one unless some nasty scandalous information comes into play. Ok, goodness is covered and badness is not covered (I'm assumming that discouraged implies not covered.) but what about neutralness? Nuetralness is known as limbo; where you spend eternity voting for 3rd party candidates and supporting the right to bear arms without ever actually owning one. A gun, . . . not the arm. You just had to introduce the last straw - guns. Did anyone mention boobies? " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
